Just curious, how does the cost of a used one today compair to historical? Something along the lines of a 180/181 averages 75 to 100k on trade a plane. Just wondering what prices might look like if things come back down in a few years.
@1krr
@1krr 2 года назад
@@iowafarmboy - TBH, bought mine a few years ago before the prices really spiked. Not sure I would pay today's prices as some deals might come around if the economy flips. Their prices are more like real estate than cars however since they don't make a lot of new airplanes and those they do make are very expensive. Given that, not sure if the prices will drop or not but I would expect at least for a little while, you'll find some deals as people look to offload extras.

I owned a ‘65 cherokee 180 for 15 years. Just sold it last year. Insurance was less than $800 a year, and ran about $2500 per annual. In 15 years I replaced the starter twice, alternator once, battery two or three times. A few ELT batteries, and IFR Certs, and one overhaul of an HSI, and a voluntary but not required transponder update. Sold it for $25K less than I paid for it, so that’s reasonable depreciation in my opinion.

I bought one in June (73 "Challenger") and am learning to fly in it. Gas has certainly gone up. Hangar fees increasing by $7.50 next month. Market for the plane has increased significantly if I change my mind and need to sell I'll be in the black. No scheduling with other people, no wondering what someone else did or didn't do to/with/in the plane: priceless. Learning all the ins & outs of ownership (stuff like preheating, washing, maintenance) along with learning to fly...a welcome Challenger.

I am 1/3 owner of a 1967 Cherokee 180. Your numbers are pretty accurate. It’s a great little airplane. Full fuel, it still has 700lbs useful load. 10 gallons per hour, 120 knots, a 300 nm trip is about 2 hours. Splitting costs (fixed) three ways is awesome. I figure $80 per hour, fuel plus engine reserve. My mind would love a 160 knot airplane. My wallet tells me we are good with the 180. We could easily spend $50k on avionics upgrades, but my iPad takes me easily into the glass cockpit world.

@danasampson818
@danasampson818 2 года назад
@@TrollerzTV Hi Edgard. I have heard about LLC partnerships also. Mine is not that complicated or formal. Just three friends that decided to buy an airplane and split the expenses. I highly recommend it. I might own my own airplane someday, but it’s nice splitting the costs. I would look at your local airport for people posting they want a partnership, or you can post your own notice.. Or, join a club that has 10 or so members on one airplane. That’s a good way to go because you can fly something you wouldn’t be able to afford.

Your presentation is excellent. Numbers? Pretty good no real complaints. A few things to add but in no way critical of your fine presentation is: 1) You fly little renting is the way to go; 2) there can be unexpected or extraordinary cost like transponder goes TU; 3) Regulations allow pilots to do basic maintenance, oil change, check/clean/replace spark plugs, airlifter, tires, brakes; 4) You bought this plane EX 2011, keep it nice, sell it 2021 you made money selling it lowering total cost of ownership. 5) Partnerships can be the way to go. Sharing cost, the fun of maintaining it with friends, pride of ownership... LOWER cost.

Good video. Numbers are pretty accurate. I’ve had my Cherokee 180 for 18 months and already flown over 300 hours in it. Luckily I have an A&P which keeps costs much lower and also my best friend is an IA. So just paying on parts. Getting your A&P if owning an aircraft is the best way to reduce those costs. Also an instrument rating will bring that insurance cost down. The aircraft all in all has been an amazing investment. Both me and my friend used it to get our private in. Now working on instrument and commercial. I added 2 aspens, a WAAS GPS and aerocruze 2 axis autopilot. So counts towards my commercial. The aircraft is probably worth double what I paid for it, along with what I would have to paid for renting a plane to get licenses. All in all it is a perfect plane to get your licenses in. Only downside is it’s a little slow. But for building hours not necessarily a bad thing. I don’t think I’ve ever had a day where I felt it was mistaking buying this aircraft.

@garyderipaska675
@garyderipaska675 2 года назад
@@reyesben Hi Benny, as to the first question about being rewarding compared to being costly. It most definitely is rewarding, in traveling the world , I did see and spend time in places I never ever would have paid a healthy airline ticket to go see. My wife was even able to accompany me on some of those trips back in the late 70’s early 80’s however that’s not the case with many corporate operations these days. I only found those far and few between that allowed wife’s to be on the corporate jet. However there’s always a cost, not monetary but the cost of not being there for your family. I missed my daughters birth because I was in recurrent training , however she was 3 months premature so that was an unforeseen cost so to speak , I’ve missed graduations , countless birthdays , Christmas, Thanksgiving etc. However most of those holidays missed I was either In Caribbean on company credit card , ( word of advice don’t call home with the ocean waves crashing in the background, jusss sayynnn) or at some ski resort skiing. One of many reasons I chose corporate instead of Airlines. Depending on many factors Typically Airline pilots make more than corporate pilots, however when they arrive into a city for an overnight it’s to the hotel for crew rest then out the next day to start the process over again . Education: There are a number of Aviation colleges out there as in EMBRY RIDDLE UNIVERSITY they will not only teach him how to fly but they have numerous programs that will get him all his licenses and ratings plus come out with a college degree in Professional Aeronautics. I attended EMBRY RIDDLE after a company I went to work for said I needed a college degree to be assigned as Captain on the airplane I was already flying a Gulfstream II , company paid for my degree , lots of online but 4 years later I had a Bachelors of science in Professional Aeronautics. Building time: Those avenues are a little bit harder these days as compared to when I did it How ever there still out there ie towing banners with small single engine airplanes , Flight Instructing etc , if he can obtain a Flight instructor certificate and teach flying that would probably be the fastest way to build time. Also EMBRY Riddle may have avenues to build time I’m not aware of , I know they do try and help graduate’s find a

@@CompleteWalkaround You can cheap out on overhaul and gamble but if you go with a Lycoming approved shop that has a good reputation... you can say about 30k (after returning the core) for an overhauled engine then you add labor to (remove and) install. Keep in mind, there will be things to replace here and there along the way, not just the engine in the process. Parts aren't cheap. I think $12 will get you the engine given the engine lasts 2500 hrs (12*2500=30000) but that's just an engine.

@@biglee13m I have owned my archer for 19 yrs. Replaced the engine 2 yrs ago after my old engine had 3550 hrs and still strong . Total cost to get an overhauled engine was 28k which included all new baffles , oil Cooler , hoses , scat tubing etc. my IA and I picked it up on a Friday and I was flying that Sunday afternoon . Owner assists are the way to go imo . I own my hangar so there is a cost there but I have a heated office and keep my boat there as well. My insurance is 900 yr for 80k hull value. I budget 5k a yr for fuel but with Covid my flying was curtailed as rental cars at the other end were not easy. My annuals run about 600 yr not counting parts like tires, tubes etc, Pitot static every 24 months cost me 340 or so. My panel over the yrs has probably got 30k or more upgrades in it. I know people who spend more on a boat here in Mn than I do my plane. It’s a passion and I thankfully can afford it. And as to Cessna vs Piper both are great planes BUT at 73 I don’t have to climb a ladder to fuel it , I just bend over 👍 My prop overhaul cost me 600.00 but can’t be overhauled again which at some point will cost me about 6k based on prices at that time which is a crapshoot
