I just found out that Piper Laurie passed away yesterday at 91. She's been in other movies, but I loved her performances in Twin Peaks & Carrie. RIP 😢

I had the honour of taking care of her publicity at the 1988 TIFF in Toronto for the film Tiger Warsaw with Patrick Swayze, she was the biggest star that year. I heard Hollywood stories from her and her wonderful friend and companion. I still remember sitting in the back of a limo on our way to a press conference when she warned me about drinking too much cheap champagne and that she learned her lesson very early in her career. We had just finished an interview with Brian Linehan at the Park Plaza and were walking toward the elevator when she saw Brian de Palma I was in between them and they hadn't seen each other since Carrie ....everyone just watched them. This brought back some beautiful memories so happy to see her still so gracious and beautiful Thank you

I thought he was a wonderful interviewer. Ms. Laurie was a friend of my friend Jackie Hyde, who called her Rosetta. I met her at Jackie’s home one day and complimented her on her extraordinary performance in a TV production of Days of Wine and Roses by J.P Miller in which she starred with Cliff Robertson. Wonderful as the feature film was, it paled compared to Ms. Laurie’s version in my opinion. She was astonishing. She was so happy that I had seen it and very gracious. She told me that as a very young woman, one of her biggest acting idols was Claire Trevor. Years later, after she had made some films in LA, a few friends took her to a party and across the room stood Ms. Trevor. Piper’s friends urged her to introduce herself and tell her what a huge fan she was, but Piper was much too shy. Later that night, Piper felt a tap on her shoulder, and turned around to see her idol looking at her. She said, “Pardon me, aren’t you Piper Laurie?” Piper said, “Yes”. Ms. Trevor said, “How do you do. My name is Claire Trevor, and I just have to tell you, I think you’re one of the finest young actresses working in films today”.

I remember as a little girl in the fifties having Piper Laurie paper dolls. She was a huge starlet back then and very popular. If you were an actress and had paper dolls in your likeness you know you had it made. I remember I had Barbara Rush, June Allyson, Liz Taylor, Debbie Reynolds, Betty Hutton and a couple of others, and Piper was among them all. I always liked her very much.

I love all her films and I am especially fascinated by her mannerisms in her work, she is very unique. To my generation she will always be the iconic Margret White that she played so sublimely. she should have received the Oscar for that performance.

My introduction to Piper Laurie was the Stephen King adaptation Carrie. Chemistry between her and Sissy Spacek was off the charts. One of my favorite Stephen King horror movies and the first to come out. The second time I saw her was her later years in an episode of Law and Order Special Victims Unit where she played an abusive foster mother to three black children. She is great at playing villains. A living Legend. 👏🏾🎭

…. Dave Karger has vastly improved. He was lucky to have his training while on the air at TCM. I remember him three or four years ago and he was horrible. At least he paid Piper Laurie the awe, respect, and gratitude that she deserves for the work that she has done and for the woman that she is.

It was so very delightful to finally enjoy this wonderful woman. She was one of my parents favorites as an actress and I remember going to the drive ins as a child. We got the cartoons and they got the movie. I did sneak and watched though and have seen many movies with Piper Laurie. So many memories. This thoroughly enjoyed this walk back in time and seeing a truly fulfilled and inspirational human being, being human. She is definitely believable and extremely a lady! Thank you so very much for sharing with us all again!❤️🕊🍀🌈😇🙏❣️

I enjoyed Ms. Laurie immensely. Carger (billed as a major film historian and co-host for TCM) was unaware of 3 of her interesting films. Poor preparation by he & his staff. But wonderful to hear Ms. Laurie share her memories.

I just watched her in the film Dream a Little Dream (1989) and thinking about her and Harry Dean Stanton. They certainly had star charisma. But the movie made me sad watching Corey Haim. He was amazing in Lost Boys but his life was tragic due to his addictions. The recent sudden death of Mathew Perry triggered these thoughts and how they both began in the biz very young. RIP to them all. They gave us pleasure in escaping reality through movies and TV. Glad the old times were able to live long full lives.

It's interesting that audience members seem to only know "Carrie" as an over-the-top, laugh-filled experience with memorably funny lines and characterizations. That's unfortunate. It was taken seriously as a fright fest in its original release.

I find that reaction not interesting but appalling and chalk it up to the sheer daftness of Generation Y (why?) and younger... "Carrie" is a brilliant important film--horror and otherwise. I have always said it should be shown in junior high as the definitive antidote to bullying.

It didn't scare me when I saw it as a kid. I was the kid who was bullied so those early scenes often made me cry but the prom scene always had me going "Get them! Burn them all!!!"

I don’t think that’s totally the fault of the public. It can be attributed to the success of the film as iconic, combined with Brian De Palma’s style. CARRIE like many of his films has a dreamlike quality to it. A lot of it seems to exist in this fuzzy dream world, beginning with that classic opening sequence (which could never be done today) and that Hitchcock style of double focus he uses, and he also mixes in a tone that sometimes almost feels like it could border on an overwrought, too tender ABC AfterSchool Special (such as scenes with the fantastic Betty Buckley as Miss Collins as well as some interactions with Tommy, and some of the pre-telekinesis prom moments). This was all on purpose. De Palma mixes up tones and to slightly disorient the audience. Throughout much of the film you’re not entirely sure what kind of movie you’re watching, and the softer and slightly exaggerated campy scenes makes the horror of Carrie’s revenge at prom feel that much more horrifying. And I’m not even getting into the intense color palette of the cinematography AND Pino Donaggio’s amazingly dreamy/nightmarish score. So I think what happens is within this weird slightly otherworldly feeling, it is rightfully terrifying and dramatic but out of context, just quoting lines and such, it can seem over the top.

Always loved her. This just happened to come up in my recommendations. I had previously missed it somehow. I love these interviews. And now, sadly, I just realized that she passed away a few days ago. She was magnificent and scary in "Carrie," devastating in "The Hustler," and the original golden age of tv producton of "Days of Wine and Roses." A great actress, I wish we had more of her on film.
