Here's a really funny fact for you: During filming in London, a Captain Jack Sparrow impersonator just walked onto the set. The guards did not think to ask for any ID, as he looked so much like the character (as reported in the English papers).

A nice fact for you and shows Johnny Depp does really care: While filming in London in October 2010, Johnny Depp received a letter from a local nine-year old schoolgirl, telling him her classmates needed help to "mutiny" against her teachers. He turned up with almost no warning at the school in full Captain Jack Sparrow outfit, but advised against mutiny.

A really awesome fun fact: Penélope Cruz was pregnant throughout production, but it wasn't noticeable until September 2010. As Penélope's baby bump grew, it caused difficulties in wardrobe, so the producers enlisted the help of Cruz's younger sister, Mónica. According to reports, Penélope filmed the close-up shots, while Mónica doubled for her in the long-distance scenes.

Fun Fact: Johnny Depp bought new water proof jackets for five hundred crew members on the set, to protect them from the cold weather. He spent a total of sixty-four thousand two hundred dollars from his own pocket.

I loved Barbossa's arc in this. The scene between he and Jack tied up to the trees where he reveals how he lost his leg is gold.

Side note the Guy who was shot by the Spanish captain while trying to claim the fountain was Norrington's second in command from the original trilogy.

I remember when the fifth movie came out and people where like "wait... there was a fourth one?"

This movie honestly has the best antagonist scene out of all the Pirates movies because of the Spanish. They are just in the movie to ruin everyone's day, succeed, and then peace out. I love that they just show up, wreck the Fountain of Youth, and then leave with no negative consequences to them. Edit after watching the full video: WTF, you just mentioned the Spanish were there but in the incorrect context. They literally came in after Barbosa and Blackbeard started fighting and held everyone at gunpoint.

A shame he never addressed one of the best lines when the lieutenant from the first 3 movies holds up the English flag and then gets shot mid-declaration by the Spanish who gives him full respect. And I prefer this movie significantly more than Pirates 5. Barbossa and Jack clearly showcase a dynamic that made the two such an effective duo before the mutiny, you believe they were friends before.

When I first saw the mermaids in this movie, i said "Oh, I guess Ariel's sisters couldn't find princes of their own, so they mated with sharks or piranhas. I'm okay with that." I think Jack didn't drink from the chalice himself because of his secret personal code. When he found out it would take someone's life to make someone else live longer, he changed his mind. He wants to gain immortality on his own terms and not hurt someone at the same time if he can help it. Like he could've been captain of the Flying Dutchman, but when Will was dying, he chose to save a friend instead.

Not gonna lie , this might be my favorite movie month Critic did.

Another really good fact: According to Director Rob Marshall, Ian McShane was chosen because "he can play something evil, but there's always humor behind it as well" and McShane accepted the job due to both the "very funny and charming" script, and the opportunity to work with Marshall.

You mentioned the crew being more funny than expected. One thing I remember about this movie was one member of Blackbeard’s crew who basically wanted to be Jack’s best friend or something. He was so into his role, he had some funny lines, and he’s the one rocking the mandolin in the background during Jack and Angelica’s dance. Seriously, you should all look up that dance scene just to see him. 😂

It's almost criminal that you ignored the set up from the interrogation scene. It perfectly shows how Jack actually thinks and the fact that this movie was the last time we had a lore accurate Jack which this movie deserves so much credit for.

Something I always appreciated about this movie is that whereas everyone else is at the fountain for a selfish reason , the Spanish , who up until that point had been minor antagonists at best, are revealed to be there to *destroy* the Fountain as they believed that mankind shouldn't have access to something that powerfull. Technically ,making them the only "good guys" in the whole situation. Which is pretty cool tbh.

The only film where Jack has a love interest and plays it perfectly.

Fun fact, the guy behind Chicago, Into the Woods, and Mary Poppins Returns, Rob Marshall, was the director for this movie.

Honestly. I really Like this movie. Especially when Barbosa and Jack are Tied up. I love when Jack looks at Barbosa drink from his Leg and says "I Want one of those." 😂

Honestly i feel like we need to give more props to Penélope Cruz to this film like to just stay through the film even through your pregnant is insane and for her to do it just shows great determination for sticking to this film despite all the pain she probably was going through

The actress playing the mermaid in this was so cute and adorable and did a good job

Captain Blackbeard and the romance between Philip and Serana are my favourite things about the film. I also really like that it portrays Philip, a devout religious character, as a genuinely good person who isn't just a fundamentalist or a crazed fanatic.

One more fact for you: Captain Hector Barbossa's (Geoffrey Rush's) ship, the Providence, was portrayed by H.M.S. Surprise, part of the collection of ships of the Maritime Museum of San Diego, where it is open daily to Museum visitors. To sail the ship during filming, Disney hired a crew from among volunteers and staff of the Maritime Museum. Surprise is a one hundred seventy-nine foot, fully rigged ship. She was built in Nova Scotia in 1970, from original Admiralty plans for the 1757 British twenty-four-gun frigate H.M.S. Rose, for which she was originally named. The ship was purchased in 2001 by Twentieth Century Fox, and modified to serve as H.M.S. Surprise, under the command of fictional Captain Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe) in Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003). The Maritime Museum of San Diego purchased the ship from Fox Studios in 2004, and retained her movie name. In both of her names, the prefix "H.M.S." (meaning His (or Her) Majesty's Ship) is an honorary, rather than an official designation, since she does not hold a royal warrant. and Head of Production Oren Aviv said Disney had chosen to scale this movie down from the former in the franchise; "It's important to get the story right and it's important to me to scale it down, because we can't get bigger. The movies have subsequently gotten bigger and bigger and very complicated and they were satisfying on so many levels obviously, but I want to kind of reboot the whole thing and bring it down to its core, its essence, just characters." He agreed that there is a lot of Captain Jack Sparrow's backstory that we haven't seen yet without confirming or denying that we might see some of that in this movie. Also Johnny Depp was deeply involved with the story design, frequently meeting the writers to show what he was interested in doing, and in the words of Terry Rossio, being "involved in coming up with storylines, connecting characters, creating moments that we would then fashion, shape, and then go back." Amongst Depp's suggestions were turning Phillip into a missionary and having a Spanish contingent following the protagonists. Afterwards, Director Rob Marshall and Executive Producer John DeLuca met the writers, and did alterations of their own, including building the female lead.

My second favorite Pirates film after the first. It’s shorter with a focus on a treasure hunt, Jack is more focused and less of an idiot, the Spainard is a cool character kind of like Boba Fett (doesn’t do much, but you love it whenever he is on screen), Philip and Syrena are a 100% better couple than Will and Elizabeth, The scene of Jack calling out the cliché of two opposing sides fighting each other when having the two main opponents doing it would be enough, Also it is more focused on what needs to be attained: Tear of a Mermaid, Two cups of Ponce De Leon’s, Fountain of Youth,

Interesting fact but during the production Penelope Cruz discovery she was pregnant; so in alot of the film's riskier scenes they brought in her sister as her double.

While filming in Australia, Johnny Depp & Stephen Graham (who played “Scrum”) actually visited a local children’s hospital in character. IT’S SO SWEET I HAVE DIABETES! 😊

I saw this in theaters in 2012 and came out loving every single moment

Cpt Barbossa has always been my no.1 character and Stranger Tides my favorite movie of the series because he gets to shine the most in this one.

I always assumed the damsel Jack is talking about is the black pearl, not the girl, he just saves her because jack is a loveable trickster and not completely evil.

This one does still have Jack as I know and love him. And Penelope Crúz as a pirate? More please! But it didn't give me more. It gave me about the same as I expected for 15 minutes and then continued sailing the Seas Of Boredom. With an occassional rock formation that was nice to look at - but nowhere to land

I actually really love this movie. Not to mention "My Jolly Sailor Bold" is a good sea shanty.

I don't think that last line is underwhelming. "It's a pirate's life for me." That kind of perfectly sums up Jack.

I’ll never forget seeing this masterpiece in theaters, and being amazed by the beautiful, stunning imagery.

I actually have a soft spot for this one. It does have its tedious moments yes but many of the jokes hit home and Jack's and Barbarossa's chemistry is on top. I'm also quite fond of that twist ending (which wasn't mentioned here) Unlike the 5th one where one is a drunk idiot, the other a uncharismatic bore and they they pretty much jump the literal zombie shark (not to mention being so full of plot holes that it resembles the first incarnation of the Black Pearl) .

For me Strangers tide was a palate cleanse from the overcomplicated mess that was World's end. I really liked it! No Will and Elizabeth to distract from from the meat of the plot, Jack doing his best throughout the whole movie, Blackbeard was a hella intimidating antagonist, Barbosa was, as always, RELISHING in his role and the plot finally went back to something simple and easy to follow while still going through classic pirate folklore like Mermaids, fountain of youth... and the spanish armada was a decent "ticking clock" and plot device.

I don't care what anyone says, On Stranger Tides is one of my favorite POTC movies and a good stand alone movie.

This movie was actually based on a pirate adventure book called “on stranger tides” which was unrelated to pirates of the Caribbean. They were gonna adapt it into its own movie. But they decided to make it a pirates of the carribean movie. Probably for name brand recognition. Author was Tim Powers.

This was actually my favorite Pirates film. 😅

This movie proves why Will and Elizabeth were underrated. Sure, Jack and Barbossa were the scene stealers, but you need less cartoonish characters to ground the movies.

The cinematography in this one is astounding

This movie pleasantly exists. It didn’t NEED to be made but it was and I kind of like it.

It’s worth mentioning that the film was based on a book that was definitely not a Pirates of the Caribbean book. Rather than rewrite it to work with Jack they basically just awkwardly shoved him in and rewrote everyone else to be bland.

Maybe it's because I have a massive guilty pleasure attraction to mermaids and being a maritime man, I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the PoTC movies, especially this one. Expect for the next movie, I find then all enjoyable

Troubled Production: More on a financial side than a production one. A tighter schedule and smaller production wound up having the opposite effect that Disney wanted. Rather than cutting costs compared to the last film, the budget ballooned up and made this the most expensive film ever made (adjusted for inflation), with a total expenditure of $410 million, exceeding At World’s End’s formidable budget by over a hundred million dollars. Adjusted for inflation, it holds its record, beating massively expensive epic events like Avengers: Endgame and Justice League. *To say Disney’s plans to reduce this film’s costs backfired would be an understatement.*

Blackbeard told Jack to jump or he’d shoot Angelica, but to make it more cruel, he’s making Jack choose a gun that both he and Blackbeard don’t know that ls loaded or not, so if Jack chooses a gun that turns out to be loaded, Angelica being hurt or worse will be because of Jack

This jack sparrow intro is probably the best of all the movies imo

I genuinely can't understand how Doug can think that all of the sequals have complicated plot lines, especially compared to the first. There's a lot more exposition and less mystery, which is a shame, but things are made much clearer as the movies go on. Pirate's 1 - A crew of pirates are cursed by gold that they stole. They need to not just return every piece, but the blood of the person that took the specific coin. One crewmember was murdered before he could use his blood and return his coin, but he thankfully had a son who had his coin so the curse can still be lifted. (Dont even get me started on Will's story before the movie, because it's confusing and possibly got some holes) Pirate's 2 - Everyone wants the heart of Davy Jones. Jack finds the key and follows the compass to the chest. Pirate's 3 - War starts between pirates and the navy. Barbossa wants to release Calypso using the nine pieces of eight and needs Jack alive again to get piece for the ritual. Pirate's 4 - Blackbeard wants the fountain of youth. A shipwreck on the island has the chalices they need, and a mermaid's tear is used in one of the cups. The cup with the tear gives life and the other takes it. Pirate's 5 - Will's son wants to break his dad's curse, so him and Jack go to find the staff of Poseidon to break every curse on the ocean. If Doug can somehow say that the fifth movie was hard to follow, I will genuinely question his ability to watch a movie.

I have to confess, I actually like this one. I like Ian McShane as Blackbeard.

70% of this movies flaws could have been forgiven if a post-creds scene revealed that whole thing was a story Jack was telling Will and Elisabeth's kid to explain why he missed his birthday😜😜

So I saw this one recently when I was catching up and I thought it was all right not as good as all of the first ones, but there was some interesting ideas and I like the effects on the mermaids and Jack’s ex girlfriend was a bit loony

This movie is actually based on the pirate fantasy novel of the same name (minus Pirates of the Caribbean) I haven't read it, but it also features Black Beard, zombies and mermaids.

I legit actually loved this movie. It's probably my 2nd favorite after the 1st one. I really dug Ian Mcshane's character and Jack is great as always. Plus to your point Barbossa is the best

Did you know that the guy who directed this is also directing that new Little Mermaid film? This movie sure gives a lot of confidence he’s gonna do that remake justice (NOT)!

Really look at the structure of this movie. The Pirates, the British and the Spanish all racing to the fountain. I'm convinced this was meant to be a variation of its It's A Mad Mad Mad World. Two missed opportunities. 1: Jack vs King George. They're kind of vague about the dates. This is the George that went insane. Now imagine the fast-talking Jack Sparrow. Versus a man who's got his life in his hand but can't form a cohesive thought. 2: Jack vs Blackbeard. Blackbeard actually wasn't a pirate very long. He was just very smart about how he went about it and made himself infamous. To of the smartest Pirates trying to outdo each other should be way more interesting than it was.

Call me crazy but this is my second favorite pirates movie after the first one!

One of the things I always said about this one was that whenever Jack Sparrow gets out of trouble he seems a bit too in control. In the other ones it seemed more like a lot of his escapes revolved around sheer (and often comedic) luck. Whereas in this one, he seemed to plan everything out a lot more and felt overall more competent. I see that as a bad thing btw, because he almost felt like a different character.

This is a guilty pleasure for me and the Mermaids are the coolest part in this film. :)

Man Patchy the Pirate from SpongeBob is going through some things

I believed Angelica cared for Blackbeard, when she wasn't around him. But when she was with him, she was playing him as a mark. It was a bit confusing, but also would make sense since he is a pirate, and you can't trust him. But the mermaid was my favorite because...well mermaids.

I love that they included the smoking beard on Black Beard. Black Beard tied his beard in dreads and stuffed them with hemp so they would smoke. Pirates would do that so they could light cannons and explosives.

Not gonna lie, next to Black Pearl, this one is my favorite. I feel like 2 and 3 leaned way too much into the supernatural, and I didn't have a lot of fun watching them. Sure this movie stupid and doesn't need to exist but it gave me exactly what I wanted. A fun adventure with elements of the supernatural.

Ian Mcshane is a brilliant actor in 'Lovejoy!' A pure 80's/90's classic series! And he played Daryl Van Horne in the musical version of 'Witches Of Eastwick!' Which I got to see with my mum in the WestEnd!❤ He has a very good voice! Please listen to the Soundtrack!😊

I think this movie’s alright. It’s the Pirates equivalent to an anime’s beach episode. 100% standalone and totally disconnected from the series’ main plot, but still a fun romp nonetheless.

I remember watching this for the first time, I almost fell asleep. I was legitimately nodding off as they reached the Fountain of Youth, but I was so stunned by the Spanish attempting to destroy the chalices -- when I expected anything but that -- and proclaiming that only God could grant eternal life that I woke wide up, sat bolt upright, and started laughing hysterically.

Barbossa had the best character arc in the franchise, I just wish he stayed as a privateer in the British Navy, there wasn’t much point in him becoming a pirate again, and a pantomime pirate at that.

I remember watching this movie with a date, she ended up falling sleep for about half the movie. I can't blame her for it.

Finally a review that I probably can agree on.

Here are some fun facts 1. This film takes place twenty years after the battle from At World's End. At first, the exact time that had passed between At World's End and On Stranger Tides was unknown. According to a statement from the film's visual guide: The quest for the Fountain of Youth began several years back after a pirate showdown with the East India Company. However, in Dead Men Tell No Tales the character Henry Turner, who was born nine months after the battle, was revealed to be 21-years-old. According to its comic book adaptation the film is set in 1751, one year after On Stranger Tides, which was confirmed to be set in 1750. 2. McShane was previously considered to play Davy Jones in Dead Man's Chest and in At World's End but lost out to Bill Nighy. McShane subsequently reprised his role in two Disney Parks attractions: the 2011 revamp of Pirates of the Caribbean and the A Pirate's Adventure: Treasures of the Seven Seas. 3. In real-world history, Blackbeard was killed at Ocracoke Inlet in 1718. Also, his body had been shot no less than 5 times and around 20 severe cuts around his body. His career as a pirate was made famous by the book, A General History of the robberies & murders of the most notorious Pyrates, which contained detailed accounts of his actions at sea. There is also no record of Blackbeard doing anything relating to the supernatural. Because of his appearance in On Stranger Tides, Blackbeard was the first historical pirate that appears in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series. 4. Stranger Tides was the film that marked Jack Sparrow as the main protagonist of the Pirates films. According to the film scriptwriters, Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, the first three Pirates were all centered around Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, particularly stating that they believed it was Elizabeth's story. 5. Love story between Philip and Syrena resembles many of the early legends of mermaids, where a fierce and beautiful maiden from the sea would fall in love with a man from the church. It is also possible that Syrena was inspired by Ariel from The Little Mermaid, another mermaid-related Disney film where a mermaid falls in love with a human. 6. According to the DVD commentary of On Stranger Tides, Richard Griffiths' casting was partly because Johnny Depp's admiration for his film Withnail and I. Coincidentally, both Depp and Griffiths previously worked together in Sleepy Hollow. 7. Depp had a part in the screenwriting process for On Stranger Tides. One of his contributions was a role in creating the Philip Swift character, including the idea of Philip being a missionary. 8. Due to Cruz's pregnancy during the later portions of filming On Stranger Tides, long-distance shots were made with her sister Mónica. 9. While not appearing in the fourth film, On Stranger Tides, Naomie Harris stated that she was asked to do some Tia Dalma lines that would be said in the film by Angelica. This was intended as a reference the backstory between Angelica and Tia Dalma. Writer Terry Rossio, however, was possibly unaware of this, as he said in retrospective that he doesn't see how Harris could have been given lines for a character she didn't play 10. Various On Stranger Tides promotions, Angelica was described as the "first female pirate of the franchise." However, there were at least two female characters before her (Anamaria and Elizabeth Swann) that were pirates, so this could either be a mistake or it was supposed to mean Angelica was the first major female pirate character (although Elizabeth was conversely also a major character) 11. Ferdinand VI and George II of Great Britain are the first historical monarchs that appear in POTC film series. 12. Blackbeard's flagship Queen Anne's Revenge is the first historical ship to be represented in the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise, because of its appearance in the fourth installment, On Stranger Tides. The Santiago, one of Ponce de León's ships that journeyed to the New World, also made an appearance. 13. In real-world history, the Queen Anne's Revenge was never used after 1718 as it was stripped of Blackbeard's pirate plunder and abandoned on a sand bar, six months before Blackbeard's death. There is also no record of the Revenge being decorated with the skeletons of Blackbeard's victims or any use of Greek fire. 14. Before portraying the Queen Anne's Revenge, the Sunset previously portrayed the Black Pearl in Dead Man's Chest and At World's End. In 2010, because the Black Pearl didn't "figure into the story of On Stranger Tides", the Sunset was reconstructed as the Queen Anne's Revenge 15. When designing the Queen Anne's Revenge, production designer John Myhre used baroque details, almost like Versailles, which would make the ship look rich and elegant. After producer Jerry Bruckheimer said that Blackbeard's ship should be designed with some skulls and skeletons (since the most famous pirate flag is the skull and crossbones), Myhre also used Kostnice, the famous "Church of Bones" in Kutná Hora, Czech Republic, when creating the actual design of the ship. 16. Blackbeard and Barbossa using the Sword of Triton's power to fill the Queen Anne's Revenge sails with gusts of wind and speed the ship in On Stranger Tides is similar in nature to Jack Sparrow: The Sword of Cortés in which young Jack used the Sword of Cortés to make the Grand Barnacle speed far out. 17. This first and only Pirates film to use zombies as henchmen/villains 18. The Sword of Triton was believed to be how Blackbeard brought men back to life as his zombie officers (particularly in LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game). However, it was confirmed otherwise that the rituals required and practiced to create zombies, most likely from Dark Magic, are separate from the sword. 19. Blackbeard had a crew of zombies in Tim Powers' novel On Stranger Tides, the basis for the fourth Pirates film. In the novel, the zombies are mindless walking corpses, but in the film, they look and act as the average person would. 20. For the filming of On Stranger Tides, the Fountain of Youth scenes were filmed in two locations. The scene near the Fountain's cave entrance was filmed in Waiakapala'e located on Kauai's North Shore-an appropriate choice because the Hawaiians believe that the waters in Waiakapala'e have their own life-giving power. The scenes inside the Fountain Cave and the Fountain of Youth itself was filmed at Pinewood Studios, with the Fountain scene filmed in 007 Stage. The Fountain of Youth set took three months to construct and features a ruined temple "in a mixture of architecture," according to production designer John Myhre, "with Egyptian, Babylonian, Greek, even Japanese elements. 21. The first screenplay draft of At World's End, Hector Barbossa starts to search for the Fountain of Youth, using the captain's journal of Juan Ponce de León that he took from Tia Dalma who in turn received it from a mermaid. 22. According to real myths and legends, the real location of the Fountain of Youth was in Florida. The Fountain also did not need a ritual in order for it to be used.

I think Will and Elizabeth were needed in these movies. Will was literally the main character of the first movie and Elizabeth was the main character in the 2nd and 3rd.

I never thought of On Stranger Tides as the best Pirates movie, but that was all because I thought back then there was “too much Jack”. Then I remembered the scene from At World’s End where Jack was stuck in Davy Jones’ Locker with dozens of copies of himself, and I immediately realized it could always be worse. Seriously though, this is one of the most expensive movies ever made… and it can look REALLY good at times. Depp still plays Jack consistently well. Plus, the addition of Edward “Blackbeard” Teach is very welcome, considering… it’s goddamn Blackbeard. How is that NOT awesome?
