Chess players! The Pirc Defense strikes again and this time it was against super GM Karjakin who played the Austrian attack. I know we studied this variation in lesson # 73, but we had not covered what Karjakin did on move # 5. I hope you find it useful!

Learn how to play Chess the right way from beginner to master level. National Master Robert Ramirez will take you up the pyramid by following a proven Chess training program he has been improving and implementing for over 10 years.
Benefits of Playing Chess:
- Promotes brain growth
- Increases problem-solving skills
- It exercises both sides of the brain
- Raises your IQ
- Sparks your creativity
- Teaches planning and foresight
- Teaches patience and concentration
- Optimizes memory improvement
- Improves recovery from stroke or disability
- Helps treat ADHD
Chess is an intellectual battle where players are exposed to numerous mental processes such as analysis, attention to detail, synthesis, concentration, planning and foresight. Psychological factors are also present on and off the board; playing Chess stimulates our imagination and creativity. Every single move a player makes is the result of a deep analysis based on the elements presented on the battlefield.
Chess in its essence teaches us psychological, sociological and even moral values. In a Chess game, both players start with the same amount of material and time. The fact that the white pieces move first is considered to be practically irrelevant -especially because a player typically plays one game as white and one game as black. Consequently, the final result of the battle solely depends on each player. It doesn’t matter if you win by taking advantage of your opponent’s mistakes or by simply avoiding mistakes yourself. Truth is that Chess is an extremely individual sport and our defeats can only be blamed on ourselves and no one else. And this, in the end, only benefits us because we learn to be and feel responsible for our actions and never come up with excuses to justify ourselves.
We also learn that when it comes to our victories on the board, our opponent's mistakes play a more significant role than our own skills. Let’s not forget that a Chess game without any mistakes would be a draw. This way, Chess provides us with another valuable life lesson: be humble at all times.

This Cuban kid is amazing. By making us understand the Pirc, he's showing us a path to start enjoying chess at a basic level, and it gets better from there. Awesome.

I agree. I've learned so much from Robert, it's insane. He is the greatest instructor on the internet. I learn from others, but his (many) lessons are so structured and clear. He's just a natural teacher. I don't know what he does outside of chess, but his teaching skills are off the chart.

Yes, the Pirc can be scary against aggreive white play, but it's about patience and an understanding of the positions. NM Ramirez is a natural teacher!

I raised my elo from 540 to 1200 by playing KIng's indian and pirc def which i learned from you. Thank you so much Robert for the great contents. The problem is the times my opponents play so aggresively and they don't alow me to finish my opening i will lose all the process and thinking because i get mad and angry that i couldn't place all the pieces. It feels so bad.

@NM Robert Ramirez I am thinking of buying a Pirc book and I saw your recommendation, however, it is from 2007, 15 years ago, so I was hoping for a more updated recommendation from you? I am currently considering the one from Mihail Marin. Any other one? Many thanks!

Good to see it played at the super GM level. Since most of us are BMs we should try to pick up from these games and lower the amount of blunders that we make.

I know some games of Poland Gm Krashenkov the way he played Czech pirc against Austrian attack 1e4 d6 2 d4 Nf6 3 Nc3 c6 4 f4 d5) 5 e5 Ng8) in a way to play closed position with tempo down similar in Caro Can fashion , the moves next (h5, Nh6, Bg4 or f5 out of the pawn chain , the game plan is to play on light squares)

This is likely my most ignorant question (of the week...) When would black use the Pirc vs. the Czech Pirc? Is it by "feel" or is the choice made by what White does? Very truly sorry if this was explained in an earlier video.
@NMRobertRamirez
@NMRobertRamirez 2 года назад
Hello! Welcome to the club 😎 That is actually an interesting question. It is rare to see, but it would basically be if White played, d3-Nf3-c3. But even when that happens, that system is not called Czech Pirc because the Czech Pirc is only when we do it as Black. Hope this makes sense 👍

@firstlast-fr1le

I have learned a lot just watching this channel. I am not good enough yet (using pirc) for even 2300 rated (stockfish) as White will take 5 lines and leave me with 3 and I am just to confined. Then again no other open for black does any better for me at the same level. It's not the open - it is Combo of playing to fast and not seeing far enough. I tried out 2 games at 3000 - first game, it didn't use any open i know it just went into kill mode. (it opened with king pawn and a knight - then ran the night down to trade for a bishop - even wasting the moves it proceeded to rip me apart) Not even kidding. 2nd game i went full on offense as much as i could and did better. Lasted 36 turns (it was messy). Seems at higher levels "positional" rather goes out the window and must attack- defense will lose. This in itself is perhaps good to know. Seems to be a line between just trading pieces (that i need for my attack) and removing key defenders - cant just trade down (simplify) without a solid plan.

Against 5. Bd3 e5, engine seems to think dxe5 is better than fxe5, and white retains a sizeable advantage.
