Benefits of Playing Chess:
- Promotes brain growth
- Increases problem-solving skills
- It exercises both sides of the brain
- Raises your IQ
- Sparks your creativity
- Teaches planning and foresight
- Teaches patience and concentration
- Optimizes memory improvement
- Improves recovery from stroke or disability
- Helps treat ADHD
Chess is an intellectual battle where players are exposed to numerous mental processes such as analysis, attention to detail, synthesis, concentration, planning and foresight. Psychological factors are also present on and off the board; playing Chess stimulates our imagination and creativity. Every single move a player makes is the result of a deep analysis based on the elements presented on the battlefield.
Chess in its essence teaches us psychological, sociological and even moral values. In a Chess game, both players start with the same amount of material and time. The fact that the white pieces move first is considered to be practically irrelevant -especially because a player typically plays one game as white and one game as black. Consequently, the final result of the battle solely depends on each player. It doesn’t matter if you win by taking advantage of your opponent’s mistakes or by simply avoiding mistakes yourself. Truth is that Chess is an extremely individual sport and our defeats can only be blamed on ourselves and no one else. And this, in the end, only benefits us because we learn to be and feel responsible for our actions and never come up with excuses to justify ourselves.
We also learn that when it comes to our victories on the board, our opponent's mistakes play a more significant role than our own skills. Let’s not forget that a Chess game without any mistakes would be a draw. This way, Chess provides us with another valuable life lesson: be humble at all times.

Rewatching this to strengthen my KIA. Very helpful video as always. Very instructive moment at 10:56: Robert decides to start to trade down to an end game and the stockfish evaluation after move 23...Rc8 is +1.2. Once the queens and rooks are gone after move 28. Bxc2, the evaluation is +3.9 - a very successful trade down.

Hello NM Ramirez. All of your lessons are outstanding. I really like these where you are playing an actual game and explaining the opening theory. It was amazing how you turned a bad position into a winning game. Well done sir! I am currently staying with the London and Pirc for openings at the moment, trying to perfect all the lines. The Austrian lesson has been a life saver, thank you for that. And these lessons on other openings have great middle and end game tactics that I can use no matter what opening I play. Thank you for making these great videos. Kind Regards, Mitch

Thank you, Mitch! It's always great to receive feedback like yours! I think it is a good idea for you to stick to those two openings for now and master them. Likewise, I like that you are open to learning other openings since that helps you broaden your Chess knowledge in general. As a matter of fact, these ideas from the KIA could come handy when playing the Pirc. Keep it up and again -thanks for your comment 👍

When black fianchettos the bishop along with c5 and d6 (no e6), I noticed the computer really likes white to play c3 and then Na3, the idea being that the knight wants to go to c2 or c4, to e3, and then maybe d5 (kinda like the Czech Pirc ideas).

I paused the video after black's 13th move (second game) and found 13.Bxh3! Qxh3 14.g4!? with the idea of Ng5 and trapping black's Queen. In general, I always strongly consider Bxh3 when black's Queen will be alone attacking my King because black will need to spend some tempi to get her back into the game and white can sometimes turn the tables and make the queen herself an object of attack.

Not as good as your move, but at 23:00 I came up with 1.Ra7 as a winning move. Then if 1...Qxa7, 2.Qxg6+ Kh8 3.Qxf6+ forking king and knight, getting a material advantage and still attacking the exposed king, and if 3...Ng7 to save the knight White has 4.Bd5 cutting off the escape square on g8 and threatening mate with Qxh6. Thanks for the great video.

Hey, I'm really enjoying the KIA! You have mentioned previously about the c3, qc2 setup. When should I employ this setup? Is it only when they have placed a pawn on e5 and the d-file is open, or can it be played regardless? Also, what are some common plans to attack in this qc2 setup? Thanks, and I look forward to the new videos!
@NMRobertRamirez
@NMRobertRamirez 2 года назад
Hello! I like to play the c3 and Qc2 plan exactly like you said - when they play e5 themselves. At that point, I mainly look for ways to capitalize on the d5 square and even a possible expansion with b4 and a4. I think you might like this exact moment if you have not watched yet. This is very good Robert. Will try the ideas out this week. Many of my opponents play the sicilian. exd, Nb3 and then d4. A new good idea for me. Nice tactics too. If you play precise and everything being equal(king position). Just pawns left. Is a queenside majority a forced win if you know what you are doing. I have struggled with it. Normally drawing.?
@NMRobertRamirez
@NMRobertRamirez 2 года назад
Good question, Carl! Such majority is a nice edge to have, but it is not. guaranteed win like you mentioned 👍

I do very much enjoy your videos. Even if the analysis is not always perfect, the concepts are sound. A few comments. First, what happens if Black plays 18 ... Qxb2 at 9:12? After 19. Rfe1, I'm not convinced that White's better. And it turns out I'm right but not for the reason I thought which was 19 ... Qxb1? Stockfish has that at +1.2. However Black does better with 19 ... Nc3 20. Nxc3 Qxc3 21. Bxa8 Nf5 22. Qe1 Qxd4. Second, after 18 ... Bxe5? much stronger for White is 19. Ba3! Stockfish gives 19 ... Qa4 20. Bxe7 Nxe7 21. Qxe5! This is stronger than 21. Bxa8 -- White picks up the bishop, gets a strong square for the queen, and still gets the rook for White's light-squared bishop or knight after 21 ... Bd7 22. Nc3 Qc4 23. Bxa8. Third, 22. Be4 is not great. 22. Bf1 is best. (I actually thought of that move right away.) The idea is to play 23. Qe4 to trade queens while leaving the b5 pawn protected. With 22. Be4, you had to play another move to protect the pawn. Fourth, Black should take on a2 with 25 ... Qxa2 26. Ra1 Qb3 27. Rxa7 Qb4, though White is still better.

Hi Robert, do you have any videos on the Catalan? I really like working with Fianchetto bishops, Perk KID and KIA are great for that purpose, the Catalan is also a dangerous and complex weapon that also has the fianchetto strategy, i am curious to see your videos on it. I have decided to play these openings because they are more setup based and require less memorization. Hi Coach, I love this video because it provides an excellent and interesting alternative to the main line Bobby Fisher attack on the kingside. Please can you do a few more vids on this more positional approach? It would be great to get a bit more insight into your ideas. I have another quick question, what happens when you open with nf3 and then your opponent plays the Dutch, which my computer seems to be obsessed with doing?
@NMRobertRamirez
@NMRobertRamirez 2 года назад
Hello! Nice to see you here on lesson # 80. You will see more lessons where I play and explain the more positional approach of the KIA. I can mention lesson # 95 for example. Regarding 1..., f5, you can continue with the same set-up (g3-Bg2-castle, etc) or you can do 2.d4 and it is the same as playing 1.d4, f5 2.Nf3. If you want to keep it consistent, then the first option might be the one. If the engine is giving you a hard time, feel free to share a game where it used this line and I will be happy to provide you with some feedback 👍

Sir , I have a question . It is really silly but I thought I should ask it. Instead of playing Nf3 can we play Ne2 because in many variations we have to push f4 and attack.after that we can play our knights on g3 and f3 and attack. I am asking this because I thought of trying it out and I won those matches because I attacked on the kingside. So my question is should I continue playing Ne2 ?

I’m not sure what material to sacrifice either way I’m losing the Nd6 so not too sure. Trying to trade queens seems like I’m doing my opponent a favor and I’m losing too much material to do it. Of course Rb1 or Bc1. I’d probably sacrifice my Knight to creat some weaknesses on the Kingside. 🤷🏿‍♂️

I have a question about the KIA vs the Slav/Caro Kann setup with c6 and d5. The KIA vs the Slav is generally considered not very good because the c6+d5 pawns blunt the bishop. On the other hand the Colle vs the KID is generally considered not very good because the setup does not work well for white. What? It is not good either way? Can you help me understand this? thanks. FYI, I tend to prefer Reti type setups (early c4) vs the Slav due to the d3 lines not generating much. My research on the QG, Reti, and Catalan vs the Slav indicates that the players of these systems make an exception for the Slav and handle it differently from the rest of their repertoire. So maybe I need to do the same with my KIA?
@NMRobertRamirez
@NMRobertRamirez 2 года назад
Hello! I personally like to treat it like I play the KID vs the London (lesson # 87). If you think about it, this Slav set-up looks a lot like what we see in the London and to make things better, we are white this time. Feel free to check out lessons # 87 and # 84 where I play the KIA vs this set up you mentioned. It is not exactly the same, but it could be useful. I am leaving you the link to the exact moment in the video 👍 Regarding the Colle vs KID, feel free to check out the last game I played on lesson # 106. The King's Indian Attack is certainly a good opening and easy to learn. However, like I mentioned in another reply, don't forget to prioritize your middle and endgame more than openings. I am sure most of your games are decided in the middle or endgame 👍 Also, be open to reviewing games played by professional players using any opening. A couple of comments about the first game. After black played Bxe5 I think Ba3 would have been extremely strong and much better than dxe5.. But black should have done Qxb2. White is still winning but it's a much closer game with plenty of tactical chances for both sides. Finallt black should NOT have exchanged rooks giving you the open file. Black then blunders with Rc8 allowing Rxc8+ and a won game. However you did make a mistake with a3. Black played Nd5 but Nc4 would have caused white some problems. BTW for the record I'm not using an engine to test this out. I like following the game on a physical board and then at certain points I wonder why a move wasn't mentioned so I play it out. Yea I move the pieces but it's better than using an engine. And i see if my thought was right or not. After that I sometimes verify with the engine to see if my analysis was good or crazy. This after all was how we did things back in the late 70's and 80's when I actively played chess.

The Kings Indian Attack is NOT an effective "catch all" system. It is bad against 1...e5, it is barely effective against the Caro-Kann because of 1.e4 c6 2.d3 d5 3.Nd2 e5, though the fact that White can play an eventual exd5 makes it less bad than against 1...e5. It also does not work well against the ...d6 or ...Nc6 Sicilians partially due to the same theme. Look at the light-squared Bishop for both players. With a Black pawn on e5, Black's LSB is free to roam and even arrive on White's Kingside to trade itself off for a Knight, and if Black can get this down to an endgame, you could be looking at a horrible case of good Knight for Black vs Bad Bishop for White. Black also maintains a space advantage if he can maintain control of e5, especially if he can control it with pieces, like if White tries to open up with f4 and dxe5, if Black can safely capture back with say, a knight, he has a firm blockade on White. In the case of the e6-Sicilian and the French, Black's Bishop is behind the pawn chain. If Black plays ...d5 (KIA vs French), White will later (usually move 9) play e5, creating a wedge and having a Kingside Attack with Black's pieces unable to help and so Black must storm the Queenside to distract White and this often leads to a bloodbath type of battle. In the e6-Sicilian, if Black goes for a later ...d6, holding back and trying to contain White and not allow e5, then you have a slower, more positional build up. Typically Black's DSB will be fianchettoed here, and with the small center for Black, d6 and e6, White should be playing for d4. The Knight should stay home at b1 and not go to d2 (Knight should only go to d2 when ...d5 is played to avoid the Queen trade after a swap on e4 or later on when the battle for d4 is done with). White should play c3 in this line, and now Black has a dilemma. Does he allow d4 by White? Or does he stop it with ...e5? Now you might be saying "that's the e5 problem you mentioned". Difference here is that it took Black 2 moves instead of 1 to do it, giving white a free move comparatively speaking, and with Black now committed to a fianchetto with the diagonal blocked by e5, and White having already played c4, White can now shift gears and play for b4 without having to worry about a weakened diagonal against his a1-rook because the Black e5-Pawn blocks the diagonal. Hope this explains clearly why the KIA are best used against the e6-Sicilian and the French, far less effective against the Caro, Nc6 Sicilian, and d6 Sicilian, and outright ineffective against 1...e5.

Hello Edin! I totally see where you are coming from. However, there are a few points to keep in mind. You can play the KIA from 1.Nf3, avoiding 1...e5 like you said. Regarding the bloodbath variation you mentioned, it can also be avoided if you use the variation I mentioned on lesson # 79, which is the same I played on lesson # 95 vs the 2100 bot. In my particular case, it allowed me to have an opening that did not require much memorization so that I could focus on what really matters: middle and endgame. Thanks a lot for sharing your feedback and hope you find some value in the other lessons from this channel 👍😎

@@NMRobertRamirez Hello Robert, so your point is that I am wrong or that I am right but that those lines have to be avoided. Could you answer me specifically whether KIA can be played against any Sicilian (d6, e6 etc.)? I am really trying to finally make a repertoire as white against Sicilian but I am having hard times, so I thought KIA could be the answer.
@NMRobertRamirez
@NMRobertRamirez 3 года назад
@@Bosnjak_Sandzaklija what I am trying to say is that I understand why you feel that way about the KIA. Like any other opening, it has pros and cons. And it depends on our style what openings we play or not. That's why I said I personally like it and play it against the Sicilian, French, etc. Many people point out how it is not the sharpest or most ambitious line, but it works for me since I do not have time to memorize so much and I am okay with trying to outplay my opponents in a middle or endgame I am familiar with. With that said, I also have a good foundation on KID and Pirc positions, which allows me to switch from KIA to KID or Pirc (colors reversed) any time so that I am always in my elements. That is also why lately I start with 1.Nf3 and from there I can go into KIA, KID or Pirc positions. Please, feel free to go over lesson # 79 if you have not since it could answer your question better. Likewise, let me know if this makes sense. Otherwise, I will be happy to expand a little more. 👍
