Pit Boss RTD Temperature Probe Replacement / ERL Code
Hey guys this week I show you how to replace the temp probe on your Pit Boss vertical smoker.
My pit boss would keep showing the ERL error code and then would shut down. I did a lot of research and it seemed like it could be a lot of different problems so I decided to call the help line and see what they thought it was. The man I talked to thought it was either the control panel or the thermostat. But he said it sounded more like a control panel so he went ahead and sent both to me. It didn't come with any instructions as to how to install either of them, Which is why I decided to make this video.

I wish I had watched this earlier. I just finished disassembling and replacing the guts of my Pitt Boss Copperhead. The control panel, the heat element, and probes. After I was finished I noticed and extra part in the new box of guts. Hmmm? What's this? It was the thermostat. It would have been so much easier to replace when I had the smoker on it's side and dissembled. I am hoping the old one will still work after polishing it up because there ain't no way this 73 year old weakling woman is going to do that job again lol.

Thanks for this! I kept getting an ER-1 error with a new pitboss and had to return 3-4 smokers to the store because no one could tell me what the problem was. Finally, the customer service people sent me a temp probe and I can install it. This video is extremely helpful. Even their customer service pointed me to your video lol.

Wow! Your video is way more helpful than the official Pit Boss video they have posted. My RTD temp probe is bad and is needing to be replaced. They said they are sending me email instructions with the part by snail mail, but your video makes the whole thing so very much more understandable. I can do this! Thank you!

The guy makes it look easy What he don't tell you is those two little screws that hold the probe in if they've been in for a while they could be rusted or stubborn and there are tiny it could make for a job.

Great video! I had trouble with my series 5 spiking in temps of 100+ degrees. Pit Boss sent me the control panel and probe. I replaced them both at the same time, so I’m not sure if it was one or both things giving me the problem. However, I did notice that the wire on the new probe was slightly longer. I smoked a pork ribs after the fix and this baby cooked like a dream. Keep the videos coming!

Thank you for making this video!!! I have already taken the unit apart to replace the control board. Knowing that I have to do this again is frustrating to say the least. Your detailed instructions made this simple for me to do on my own. Women watching this, you can do this. Do use a piece of wire or a strong string to help you guide this through makes this easy. My question on this video is ... do you have to remove anything from the back of the unit to remove the original probe wire? When you push it through the back of the unit, where does it go and how do you disconnect it? Then reconnect the pin and send it back through the unit? After watching two videos on the same procedure, I'll try this one first and if that doesn't make sense, I'll turn the unit over and follow instructions from the first video I watched. I'm hoping this one works without all the hassle. I'll post a reply when I get this done (8-4-21). Good luck ya'll.

@Build Stuff With AJ how do you know when your heat sensor is not working correctly? I have the Lexington smoker/grill. I've felt like the grill is not heating up (enough) properly. 25° to 50° makes a big difference in these smokers. So I thought maybe mine is not working correctly
@BuildStuffwithAJ
@BuildStuffwithAJ 2 года назад
Well to be honest it's been over a year since I've had the problem so I'm not sure I'd remember what the guy on the phone told me lol. But I ended up replacing both my rtd temp probe and the control board. It would heat up a couple hundred degrees higher than I had it set and then it would shut down and show the ERL code. The guy on the phone said it could be either one so he sent me both.

How did you know the temp probe was the cause of your erl code? As soon as I turn my unit on, it gives me the ERL code, and won't let me do anything.
@BuildStuffwithAJ
@BuildStuffwithAJ 4 месяца назад
To be honest, I called the pit boss help line and they told me it was either the temp probe or the control unit, They sent me both since it was still under warranty, but they arrived about a week apart so I ended up making two different videos for it. So moral of the story is, be prepared to buy both because apparently they don't even know how to tell which on is the problem lol
@billhill5181
@billhill5181 4 месяца назад
That's funny, because I had replaced the main control unit already, so they sent me the temp probe, and that ended up being the fix. Mine was years out of warranty as well BTW. So props to Pit Boss for still taking care of me.

Has anyone tried moving the control panel to the top of the smoker to avoid the extra heat and drippings?
@BuildStuffwithAJ
@BuildStuffwithAJ 3 года назад
Not that I know of, you would have to extend all the wires for it to reach. And I'm not sure it would be beneficial, heat rises so it would get more heat that before. And it wouldn't be protected from the weather on top like that unless you built a housing for it. About the only advantage, other than not having to bend over lol, would be avoiding drippings. But honestly they wipe right off if you clean it after every use.
