I see a problem with a lot of kids wanting to just throw the ball hard and it doesn't matter if they are a pitcher or fielder. I always try to emphasize accuracy first then build the speed of the throw. I think that would also help to reduce throwing injuries by improper form in a lot of cases. My son pitches and I am going to use this video to reinforce my points... Thanks!!

Great video and so true for 2013. Now with the hitting emphasis on launch angle pitchers are pitching up in 2021 to neutralize extra base hits. Love how the game evolves!

Ive always heard that it was more important for young pitchers (15-16yo) to focus on mechanics and control. As you wisely said in this video you can throw in the 90s but if youre all over the place your speed is useless. So work on the mechanics and control then with your pitching coach and a bit of selfconfidence you can build some speed. Thats the philosophy down here in italy for some teams.

Thanks for writing! It depends if you are a starter or reliever. If a starter you will probably need 3 pitches. If you are a reliever you can get away with two. If I were you I would rather have fewer pitches you feel comfortable with than too many pitches that you don't. The first thing is to be able to command your fastball. Once you've established that you can work with a change-up, curveball, or slider. If you are able to command 2 pitches you will be very effective, especially for your age.

Thanks a lot. I'm pretty good with my fastball but not yet there with my cutter. I like Mariano's pitches. Not many pitches but is still dominant

Yes I think everybody has command issues from time to time it is natural. I see a lot of young kids continuously miss up but never make an adjustment though. Good luck!

there was a guy in my leauge who trew 65 (fast for my age) and he could hit his spots but i used that to learn how to hit line drives and consitently off faster pitches and next year i move up to wear kids trow 70-75 and hit there spots im excited but im not sure im ready any thing i can do to get an advantage?

Hey I'm 14 years old and I want to pitch but. Usually turn down the opportunity to pitch because my velocity sucks but command is pretty good. I also throw very few pitches. Although I know a lot of them, it's just I'm not consistent with them. Is there any pitches you recommend a pitcher to throw for strikes, I'm mostly looking for a go to pitch beside my fastball, cutter, and change up. Thanks

Our coaches always have us practice command when warming up on the mound by having our catchers tell us where to throw (ex. High Inside, Low outside, etc...)

I completely agree with you man, you can throw 150 mph if you can't hit the strike zone you can't throw strikes

Ik this is an old video but I’m 14 I average about 2 or 3 walks a game I Throw a full game and I throw about 75 and a little higher and I want to know how to throw hard all I work is placement and never speed so how would I throw faster

Assuming you’re still a pitcher, 1.work out/on strengthening the muscles you use when you pitch (you can find good videos on that) 2. Know your body and perfect your mechanics to max efficiency. 3. Long toss, arm care, and bullpens

ya all these guys can hit their spots but none of them throw 65 miles an hour... I don't care if u can throw the ball that low in the zone everytime to be a major league or even minor league pitcher your fastball has to have some velocity and decent movement or hitters will hammer it

PlayBoomAndClash Yes very true, to make it to the Major Leagues you are going to probably have to throw somewhere in the mid 80's.

Let's be real if the scouts weren't just looking for velocity than more kids would take care of there arms and work on command. But that's not the reality the reality is scouts only glance at you if your touching over 90 and are in High School I seen it all year

I agree velo is huge. If you want to pitch in big leagues you have a much better chance if you are over 90 than if you are 85.
