Luca is a wonderful new Disney Pixar film that I can't stop thinking about, and I wanted to know why! So I went back through every single Pixar movie from Toy Story, The Incredibles, Inside Out, and beyond to figure out how the animators and artists over at Pixar use camera techniques and brilliant cinematography to hack our emotions and make us feel as vulnerable or triumphant as their iconic characters!

A couple people on twitter said the title and thumbnail of this video were mean-spirited, describing "art doing what art is supposed to do" in a way that feels accusatory and negative. So while I was supposed to be traveling to a wedding and relaxing this weekend, I instead spent a couple hours panicking and coming up with alternate titles and thumbnails that felt nicer, only to be told by fellow creators that my original title and thumbnail was actually okay and good. So, I reset it to how it was. And all of that back and forth probably wrecked this video's SEO. So, idk, I'm sorry if you feel like I'm being mean to Pixar here. Hopefully the actual video shows how I am being nothing but sincere and complimentary. Art is supposed to hack into your emotions. That's not a negative trait of art. It's the defining trait of art, and I hope this video shows the absolutely brilliant ways that Pixar movies accomplish deep emotion through stellar cinematography!
@acgeewhiz
@acgeewhiz 2 года назад
Agreed. I think hardly anyone thinks that “life hacks” are mean spirited. Keep the faith in your creative decisions, Scott!
@Skye_Writer

Nothing mean about your title or the essay. And anyone who disagrees that Pixar grabs you by the throat and will make GROWN MEN cry over an animated movie has obviously NEVER WATCHED a Pixar movie. :) Btw, the only thing I disagree with is that the Jessie shot is the saddest one Pixar as ever done. "UP" kills you in the first 10 minutes, and the entire sequence that gets everyone is told without words.

Even the 1980's, changing the Center Of Projection (COP) in computer graphics (i.e. the "camera" location) was pretty simple. It's just 3 numbers (copX, copY, copZ) in the math calculations. Keeping the camera stationary was probably a little easier for the programmers -- less work, less code -- and it helped to highlight the ever changing light sources in the video. Therefore, in Luxo Jr., a fixed center of projection (keeping the camera locked down) was a choice. It wasn't a technology limitation. I know this, because I studied computer graphics in the 1980's... before Scott was born. So, Scott, please don't feel old, and thank you for the awesome videos!

I always had the same problem with pixar, I'm bussy watching all the amazing animations and tried to figure it out how they do some random thing that I can't feel properly the story. But after seeing the movie a couple time I focus more on the story and the emotions than the design of everything.

idk if this counts as a Hot TakeTM or not, but i dont think Jessie's flashback in Toy Story 2 is sadder than the opening of UP. i mean i know everyone gushes over Up's opening, and its kind of beating a dead horse at this point but, as heartbreaking as Jessie being forgotten about for years, and then abandoned is, i think there is something so much more real about Carl and Ellie just montaging through life.
@Dalenthas
@Dalenthas 2 года назад
Indeed. When Scott said "the saddest scene in any Pixar movie" my mind went to Bing-Bong fading away, but then he cut to a bed and I immediately assumed it was Ellie's deathbed before I realized what scene he actually meant.

Yeah, my first thoughts were the opening of Up and the ending of Toy Story 3. Also thought of the crying scene in Inside Out and Coco singing to his grandma. (That last one is probably the one that gets ME the most, to be honest - just thinking about it I'm tearing up!)
@acgeewhiz

That’s the great thing about Pixar. There are at least five scenes that folks could claim as “the saddest scene in Pixar”, despite them making mostly comedic leaning films.

One thing i realised watching this video is that somehow the animation quality in pixar movies imo seems to peak in toy story 4. The way the lights reflect off of the woody and bo in the final scenes looks beautiful. Soul and onward seem to dip a bit in quality and luca again looks gorgeous because of the way it is lit. the scene shown in the video looks stunning in the twilight sun. Lighting and background blur pay a key role in how good a scene looks.

Pixar have made best use of not having to have a physical camera, and have framed shots where a physical camera would have been impractical intentionally, for artistic effect.

Animation may not have a camera but it definitely is no less framed than live action, maybe more framed since Animation can flat out do impossible things.

I didn't actually cry for the 2 seconds when they legally play that clip, I just feel like it was just pointless filler. I never even cried at that line, because it felt like it was stupid to begin with. And it's not like I hate Pixar, I love a Pixar Film from time to time, I just don't think all of them are 10/10 like how Family Guy portrays Daft Punk in that 1 scene.

You mentioned how each Pixar movie technologically gets better, and I just had to mention that back when Disney+ first became a thing, I went to the bottom of Pixar's page on it and watched everything in order because that's where the Pixar Through the Years section is, and I noticed that the shorts released before every movie act as test beds for the next technological leap they do in the next movie. Excluding the first shorts done by the company, you begin with Geri's Game, and that may have been a test to get better looking humans, also there are leaves. Leaves are in a Bug's Life, but notice that there are more human characters on screen in Toy Story 2 and the animation is way better than anything they had in Toy Story. For the Birds is about getting better textures on creatures, and it's paired up with Monsters Inc. Could have also been an experiment to make the scales and fins work more in Finding Nemo with translucency and such. Boundin' takes place in the Desert and was placed before The Incredibles, but you know what takes place after that? CARS! Which is in the Desert! One Man Band takes place somewhere in Europe with a bunch of older buildings and cobblestone roads, oh, would you look at that, the next year we're in Paris with Ratatouille. Partly Cloudy is clearly an experiment to do better with clouds and weather, and then you have Up which is in the stratosphere multiple times, okay, maybe not the stratosphere, but you get what I mean, they're up in the sky. Eventually, everything gets to a point where there is no discernible lead up between short and movie, everything just progresses like all technology does, anything is feasible, it's now just a matter of how realistic or stylized you want to be. But I think for a good stretch in the late 90s and through the 2000s, the people over at Pixar would have an idea for a movie, but they wanted to see if it could be done and how well, so they would test it with a short first, and once they knew they could see what they were testing in the short would work, they would fully finish it, slap it on the next movie, and really get going on the movie with the new information they gathered so it to be ready in another year or two. Notice how there wasn't a short for Coco(Disney forced it to be their Frozen thing so if there was one we didn't know), Toy Story 4, Onward, and presumably there wasn't a short planned for Luca as they were either absorbed by the Sparkshorts program for Disney+ or they decided to just let the tradition end because the shorts served no practical purpose for the technology (not that there aren't still new things that can be done), and now are more for storytelling opportunities for filmmakers. There is an exception though, the short Burrow was released at the same time as Soul, and had the movie been released in the theaters, I could have seen Burrow being placed before it. This was wholly 2D animation, it's adorable though, I get big We Bare Bears vibes from it, but there have been a few 2D shorts over the years, so maybe Pixar is planning to do some big throwback to 2D animation one day once they pick an aesthetic. Anyway, probably ever since Piper, every short is more like Luxo Jr. where it's more an emphasis on telling a story in the short (not that they never did), and the technological achievements seem to have less of a focus to my eye, although Piper is a standout in photorealism and it did get released not too long before Cars 3 which has a beach scene. Anyway, this is just an observation of mine.

I feel Disney have done a fantastic job of portraying the scale of the starships, better than Star Wars did before. 90% of the emotion comes from the music, im realizing this watching this video, that shows off the awesome camera work, but none of the music, and noticing the utter lack of emotion.

I remember being in film school and meeting the technology fetishists by that I mean people that were more interested in what you could do with new film tech rather than the why. I remember feeling those people were stupid because you can’t do anything meaningful with the new tech without an artistic meaning behind it. It’s great to see that Pixar had the same philosophy it seems
