Pixel 2 XL P-OLED Burn In Test (Most likely image retention)

I have been following the screen burn in reports on the Pixel 2 XL and decided to do the test myself. At first I thought that for sure my display had suffered the dreaded burn in that is being reported everywhere. After testing it several times and deciding to switch those pixels on and off several times I realized that this is most likely image retention and not burn in that people are experiencing. Take a look for yourself. Obviously the longer your screen is on and Nav bars are showing the stronger the burn in will appear, but the image retention will fade with a little bit of time and replacing those pixels with another image. Let me know your thoughts.

Thank you very much for looking at this in this way! Everybody is calling this "burn-in" but nobody is actually qualifying those statements with what they mean. I think they mean "Hey, I see something. I've heard the term 'burn-in' before, so this must be it!" when, exactly as you've pointed out, temporary image retention (aka "Ghosting") is a fact of life with modern high-quality screens, especially OLED screens. However, NOBODY seems to be answering the question of: "Is this actually burn-in or just ghosting?" If you want to further clearn it quickly, fire up a white background at 100% brightness for a couple minutes, then put random colors over top of it (watching a few minutes of an action movie usually does it) and that should get it 95% gone if it's just image retention. Sometimes you have to keep it on longer than that but it's worth just a quick attempt most of the time. But as I said, THANK YOU for addressing the difference between temporary ghosting and permanent burn-in and actually showing the behavior of such!

Honestly, I had this "screen burn" / "image retention" on my Pixel OG after about a month. Literally has not gotten any worse since so I think you are right about this one.

I have the Pixel 1 XL and the same thing happened to me after a month also. It also has not gotten any worse and you can only see it when the scree goes black. Otherwise, I see nothing, even when the phone is locked.

My original Pixel XL has really bad image burn. I am actually sending it back to Google for a replacement, cause it's really bad, and seems to be getting worse. I also have the new Pixel 2 XL and I will be very sad if it starts to burn as well. I have already noticed the bar across the bottom, but then again I may be obsessing and imagining it. On the other hand, the only time I don't see the navigation bars on my OG Pixel is when the back bars are showing and cover it up. I can also see crystal clear the top status bar, and the round circle from my alarm clock snooze!

peter bombala I did send it back and got it replaced. I do have the pixel 2 XL that has some screen burn in that happened after a couple days sadly. I haven't sent that back yet, cause it isn't so bad that it bothers me yet

IMO the guy that posted the first images of burn-in probably did it for views. Click-bait to the max with OLED panels since it's one of the consumers biggest fears. I have had the device for 5 days w/ 5-6 hours of screen on time and have yet to see any burn-in and image retention was very minimal.

I just got my P2XL on Wednesday, and now today (Sat.) I'm noticing the burn in/retention. I really hope that you are correct. If so, when 8.1 comes out, Google will have a fixe for it.

Had my phone for 5 days and I'm experiencing this. Doesn't seem like there's a point in replacing it. Seems like everyone is getting this. Hope Google get Samsung panels next year for the P3XL

I am using the Caseology Parralax case - its my favorite case and it goes on every phone I purchase. Find it here : www.amazon.com/Google-Caseology-Parallax-Protective-Geometric/dp/B075RRSMFV/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1508866066&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=pixel+2+xl+caseology&psc=1

I ordered the Otterbox Defender, but this case looks like it might be a little thinner. What is the screen protector? Looks like it is tempered and curved. Any problems with touch?

I have just checked on my Pixel 2 XL, I did this for about 10 minutes, and seeing no difference, I very clearly see the nav buttons and the outline for the navbar. How long should we have to do this before we can identify if its permanent?

haha - the screen protector is from Amazon. A company named AMFilm - it works fine for me currently and I don't have any major issues with it and it works well with the case that I have. The only minor thing is probably my fault when applying it as I got a little bit of dust underneath it while applying and wiped it off the bottom side of the screen protector before applying. Due to that their is a slight area where the screen protector isn't completely flush with the glass and I can see a kind of rainbow effect, but only if I am in direct sunlight. Other than that is is perfectly fine and gets the job done. It was also very easy to apply. Thanks again and I would really appreciate a sub as I am looking to potentially start doing regular tech reviews/videos. Please see below for my previous post with links to the screen protector I used and the screen protector I have pre-ordered that I am anticipating will be even better quality but is currently not released yet. See below: the screen protector is this one : www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075WW69PS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It doesn't have the greatest of reviews, but I found it to be perfectly fine to do the job now while we wait for better options. I already have this one on pre-order: www.powersupportintl.com/3d-tempered-glass-for-pixel-2-xl/ This is on the Google Store and is certified by Made by Google. It is pricey, but I have to imagine its quality if google is selling it on their store. You cannot pre-order directly from Google store at this time so I went ahead and ordered from the manufacturer directly. For those who want to order from Google, here is the link : store.google.com/product/brilliant_tempered_glass

I don't have the phone so it's pointless for me to comment what I think it is. Can those with burn-in marks do this test and see if its indeed screen retention? It's really hard to believe that Google can fuck up this big

turn the video up to 4K resolution and find a 4K screen to watch it on LOL. I agree though that RU-vid compression can be really annoying in terms of slighly lowering the quality and creating weird artifacts in the video.

It's burn in, I have it on my Moto Z Force Droid, too. It's because the static image is always on display, and that's not good for OLED panels. Every phone on the market has LG's AMOLED technology, which is stupidly faulty tech. Every phone is burn in out of box, and they are intended to be that way because they want consumers to get a new phone every year. You get 10% back for your current one. It's called marketing. Even Samsung does it, but QHD is in their phones, but the display is OLED shit~
