[Hi-Fi Mono] From the group's first appearance on National USTV. First of two songs on this occasion. This very special program was the creative idea of Hal Willner.
Doolittle went platinum (i.e. more than a million copies) in the US. While that's not "Nickelback level" in terms of sales, it's not too shabby either.
If you ask who are the influence of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Weezer, Radiohead, Blur, The Strokes, The Killers, My Chemical Romance, and many others, this guys are the answer.
I was one of them.i saw the band on an open air festival and the drummer fascinated me.He was so perfect in hitting the cymbals on "gouge away", the pixies definitely influenced me of picking instruments like bass, guitars and drums and just play them cause they looked like people like you and me standing on the stage having a gig. Every year now you plug in the tube and another rock god dies. This monkey is gone to heaven. Amen.
They aren't under appreciated at all...so many famous and amazing artists consistently consider the Pixies to be one of the most important and influential bands of the 80s. Mainstream fame and appreciation/influence are two different things.
@@jeff7764 they are appreciated just fine by me and most people I know. And after going and watching them perform and experiencing that and the response from the crowd packed into the venue, it is pretty clear that plenty of other people appreciate them as well. So yeah totally absurd to say they are under appreciated.
This song has haunted me since 1992, it’s a massive part of my history, the best things in life don’t last that long, but how they burned bright, thank you Pixies
I came here to see if Frank Black does the “I’ll get mine, too” live like it is on the record, where he backs away from the mic as he says “too.” He does. 1:23
Black Francis is a lyrical tenor (aka a mid tenor) and always stayed within a comfortable range when he likely could sing much higher. I love his mixture of clean singing and screaming which really influenced so many bands that followed in genres like post-hardcore, emo, and as everyone knows grunge. Him and Chris Simpson of the band Mineral are kind of the pinnacle of the mid-tenor in rock music to me.
Albini does not like using things like enhancers and autotune and such, so it was very much not undorctored in the studio. Even in the later albums after reunion they did not use computers. Listen to Frank even more recently like the 2014 shows (gouge away is the track) holy cow..
@@joesutherland2017 No such thing as "just screaming". He was using distortion, which is a singing technique that not anyone could just whip out and do
As a Brit if there is one band I wish were one of ours it would be the pixies. The greatest band to ever come out of the USA. God bless the pixies you mean so friggin much to me from London England
They look horribly nervous to me, esp. during the first couple of minutes. Frank is scared. No doubt. The looks at Kim like, "WHAT THE FUCK are we doing here?"
Look at them at the end of the vid they were like "OMG i think we screwed up, did they like us? What do we do now? I think they didn't like it.." If only they knew they were going to have excellent success in just a few years.
@@lucasocanto58 lmao, grunge was a fucking cure to all those glam and pop rockers. Go watch an interview with Ronnie James DIO. Bands like Poison, Twisted Sisters etc. instead of putting an effort in time into their music, put all of it into their image. Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden - these bands were cure to the trash glam rockers served us.
You are absolutely right. The guy is not supposed to be a rock star. The guy is an artist He just happen to choose / stumble upon rock and roll, the guitar, and lyrics as his medium. And thank the heavens he did. What an f'in genius. The guy deserves the MacArthur award. The fact that they are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, on their first year eligible, shows you what a corporate joke that is. Long live the INTP.
i like how the bass is so clear, actually all instruments are. and i've don't remember ever hearing kim's vocals/mic at the same volume level as Frank's, her voice is so good. great video, thanks!
I wouldnt say as important. The Beatles explored tons of genres and revolutionized popular music. The pixies are responsible for influencing basically all important alternative bands in the 90s. But yeah they were insanely important to music
LOL Are you 13 years of age ? You're suggesting the Beatles who defined the 1960's; had three exceptional songwriters and singers; sold over 600 million records and counting; are multi Grammy award winners and have had their songs covered by thousands of artists are only as good as The Pixies ? You're clearly deranged. I like both bands. I've seen The Pixies on numerous occasions, starting back in 1989, so pretty sure I know what I'm talking about. They're an influential band. True. But don't say such idiotic things without expecting 'feedback', silly bollocks.
CardiffBoy1927 alright Lester Bangs calm down lad, I'm from Liverpool and like the Beatles but they are overrated half there catalogue is bubblegum pop shite
The greatest rock n roll band I ever listened ..so unique sound..crazy lyrics..no one like them..one of the most influential band,absolutely..saw them live,3 hours of pure rock..
I love PIXIES They are all great musicians one of the best bands of all times. But what really impresses me all the time is Kim Deal. She has talent, charisma, great personality and she is beautiful. She is always smiling, she has it all. although here everyone looks nervous she seems like she wants to laugh. ♥ ♪♪♪ ♥
Holy cheese how did I not know about this song until now. This is the problem with only having the best hit lists on spotify and everything. I had an idea that the Pixies are freaking frakking awesome, but this has sealed the deal for sure
the rock n roll hall of fame is "fake" anyways. it means nothing. its just a tourist trap in Ohio. The group that decides who gets inducted aren't even musicians, they're businessmen that occasionally take bribes.
Forgot about Kiss Off by Violent Femmes… a few years prior in 1983 … the 1-10 count up….Also pretty cool….”I take one, one, one cause you left me, And two, two, two for my family, And three, three, three for my heartache, And four, four, four for my headaches, And five, five, five for my lonely, And six, six, six for my sorrow, And seven, seven for no tomorrow, And eight, eight, I forget was eight was for, But nine, nine, nine for the lost gods, Ten, ten, ten, ten for everything, everything, everything.”
God, Joey’s guitar playing is fucking insane. It’s wild that any of his parts would never ever be anyone else’s first, second, or third instinct as a guitarist -I’d imagine most guitarists coming up with even one of his guitar leads would be among the most creative days of their entire life, yet Santiago churned them out like they were nothing.
Hell YES!! Didn't like Nirvana when they were dominant in the 90s, hadn't heard of the Pixies until the last couple of years ago, wish I'd heard of them sooner. They are awesome.
mc coolarge Nirvana were brilliant and Kurt Cobain had a great musical vision but it was too dystopian for me back then, and probably still is but someday I might explore and embrace it.
Definitely better, and also more influential, than Nirvana, but it's hard to tell if Nirvana would have been as good as them if Cobain hadn't died young. Nevermind is definitely overrated. Most of the really special songs on that are on the second half, it ends weak, and the album doesn't push any boundaries. But In Utero, flaws and all, is one of the finest albums of the '90s.
My boss has played this in the kitchen at work a few times and it always hit but I never asked what it was. Once I found it I could not take it off repeat. Screaming the lyrics at the top of my lungs and letting the song rock my soul. Absolutely legendary piece of art right here
She sure knows how the move, rock strut, even this subtle facial expressions are spot on. That is how to perform, she lives it, believes in it, glory glory…so this is how it’s done!
This is Art at its purest. It punches you in the face, then it draws you in. I can’t believe how fortunate this audience is. You just know the first time you hear something that it’s gonna change your life permanently.
a band that has a new element, that didn't have any other bands in the late 80's, for me the pixies are the father of all legends from other legendary bands like nirvana & radiohead
This is what Frank Black looked like when I first read about Pixies in the pages of Thrasher in 1989. That was my introduction to Pixies - I saw what they looked like and read about them before ever hearing their music.
It's fascinating that this doesn't really happen anymore now. Happened to me with lots of bands and no record store near, and no web access yet. Also, I've read that Talking Heads heard about Joy Division while they were in the studio (on an island), but didn't actually HEAR them as they couldn't buy the JD album, still the sound they imagined that band to have inspired their "Fear of Music" album.
I remember when this played on TV clear as day 35 years later. I had heard of the band but had not actually heard them. This song triggered one of the greatest love affairs of my life. I still recall the thrill of "Rock me Joey" at 1:41 then that gorgeous interplay of the twin guitars after the short solo, then being mesmerized at 2:07 when he is holding the chord shapes and he doesn't strum but you can still hear the faint chord ringing...still so amazing all these years later.
Mind blown at the moment at how young Pixies are in this video. I feel really old watching this. 1989 might as well have been 1889 compared to things today.
Brynne Morrison if you mean they look like not influenced by anyone, compare this song to "man who sold the world", you should see similarities (sorry if the English is bad i'm French ^^")
