In this video I reprocess some old data of the Iris Nebula and demonstrate the power of the HDR Multiscale Transform tool in PixInsight. The image was never a favorite of mine because of the massive star field, but it perfectly demonstrates the power of the HDR Multiscale Transform tool.

Good video. You've inspired me to go back and reprocess my Iris which also left me feeling a bit meh.

Thanks James, I really want to retake this image now with the better camera and longer focal length to see what I can do.

@@JoesAstrophoto The Edge8 with the 294 will get a nice tight view on the iris. I framed it up last year and took some test shots but never ran a sequence on it.

Thanks Isaac! It was interesting to see what it could really look like. Still too many stars though, I'll have to try again on the target soon.

Thank you so much for doing this video! It was extremely helpful! I’m not as proficient in Photoshop, so I’m glad you explained what a lot of the sliders did. I really love your final reprocessed image. The colors just pop, not only in the nebula but in some of the main stars. You might also try an unsharpmask just on the nebula. Thanks again for the video, I really appreciate it! Great job!

Thanks Michael! I'm hoping to be able to actually image the Iris this year again with the 294MM Pro and I'll compare the images.

Convolution on the RGB... that's a neat trick. I typically get pretty aggressive with the noise reduction on the RGB and then let the luminance bring out the detail. I might try out convolving the RGB instead. I came for the HDR and left with a completely different trick to try. Thanks, Joe! 😀

Cheers Joe I'm just getting into using Pixinsight so these are great for me. I wonder did you try running Starnet over the stars to reduce a little or did it not work so well. Cheers

@JoesAstrophoto 3 года назад
I'm glad it helps Ollie, I think you'll love PI once you learn it! I did actually try starnet on and it left some little artifacts where the stars were. I didn't get enough data to cleanly remove and reduce the stars when I took it last year. I do plan on shooting it again later this summer and will get more time on it/

@@JoesAstrophoto Hey thanks Joe yes your tutorials are being very useful, I've a long long way to go🤯. I noticed with my most recent try of PI if I used the auto stretch and tried to remove stars it left weird artifacts so I just did a more gentle histogram stretch and it worked much better. Looking forward to your next capture on this one, always enjoy your content 👍

Joe maybe you can help me out , you think I would know this... I am using a ZWO294 with the 1 1/4 in. nose piece . I got the Lpro filter 2in. and need the 2 in. nose , for some reason I am having a mental block , what should I get ??
@JoesAstrophoto
@JoesAstrophoto 3 года назад
Hey Steve I only shoot mono, but I believe the ZWO filter drawer is M54 for the 2" filter so you'd need an M54 to M42 adapter. I know I saw them on High Point and OPT's website before. Another thing, many field flattener/reducers have a place to screw in an LP filter so you may want to check yours. Not sure if that will work for you or not, depending on how far away you want your filter from your camera sensor.
