It was written to advertising the first funicolar in city that is the funicular of Vesuvius (the Vesuvius is a volcano) inaugurated in the 6 may 1880. Indeed people didn't use it because they was afraid of the volcano's danger and also the tourists ,for different reason, considered the funicular unsafe . This song participated in a local festival of national importance regarding Neapolitan songs called "Festa di Piedigrotta" (it is the italian name, I think It can be translated as "festival of Piedigrotta") and it won the festival. After this song had a great success and it sold about 1 milion copies , that was a lot at the time.
