If you've ever gone to place a file in Photoshop, you've inevitably considered which option to use-Place Embedded or Place Linked. In this tutorial, I'm going to show you the differences between the two, give scenarios where you would want to use each. I've also included some cool tricks for the more experience users who already know the answer to this question.

When I started creating in PS I made everything a linked file. All my linked files were on a Seagate external drive. It crashed and I lost everything! It was a hard lesson, but now I embed everything.

Yeah, that is the BIGGEST drawback of linking -- you always need to have ready access to the original files.

When linked assest are also used in other projects. It works A LOT better in Indesign and Illustrator.

linking to a RAW file would be better than embedded. That way you always retain RAW data as opposed to embedded pixel data & RAW data is preferable in ACR.

Yeah, this is a great use of linking. But realize you can also embed a raw file. It will simply make your PSD parent file a lot larger.

@@nuclylearn But an embedded RAW file becomes a pixel layer doesn't it, so the RAW data is lost/converted to pixels

@@BubbleGendut No, if you place a raw file into Photoshop as an embedded file it will remain a RAW file. Double-clicking on the layer will bring up the Camera RAW interface. Note however that if you open a file via Camera RAW and don't change your setting to "Open Object" then the resulting file in Photoshop will be a flattened pixel layer. But the "Place embedded" command won't do this-it only applies if you are opening a RAW file directly.

@@nuclylearn Sorry but that is wrong. Unless its a Smart Object it does not remain RAW. According to Adobe RAW files embedded as smart objects in Photoshop retain their RAW features, but once you’re editing directly in Photoshop, you’re working with the processed result of the raw conversion, not the original raw data.

@@BubbleGendut As a layer, yes, you're working with the processed result. But with an embedded file, the raw file becomes a child to the parent file and still exists in full. When you double click on the embedded layer, it will open the RAW file in ACR. There, you can make changes to it. And once saved, the layer inside of Photoshop will be updated. I just tested it and it does indeed retain the RAW information when you embed a raw file. If you have Photoshop, you can test it for yourself.
