@@uppityglivestockian No, it's the people that actually know what they are talking about. Unfortunately, that happens to be a minority of people. This man has to be the most overrated tenor of all time. He sings through his nose and has no high notes, at least none that don't sound strained. Musically a very gifted man, but not a good tenor. He realised to late in life that he should have been a baritone like his father. Even if I compare him to tenors of today, which (mostly) do not stand up to the tenors of Domingo's era and before, i can find many, (even the ones that sound like buzzing flys) that I would rather listen to.

Thanks for posting this. Domingo has been such a phenomenal tenor, has always taken good care of his voice, now transitioning to a fine baritone. Fun to see James Levine as a young conductor, and to hear Peter Allen (the Met announcer) again.
Placido himself says that he is not a baritone. Even the great conductors and producers say that it is about the beauty of his voice and his magnificent interpretations that makes him unique. He sings these roles not as a baritone or as a tenor but as Placido Domingo!

So expressive... Beauty is within his throat, he doesn't need to impress you with some thrilling vocal acrobatics like other singers who shows off how well they can sing a couple of high notes. He makes you listen to the music contained in clarity and emotion of his voice.

He's an incredible singer...He has an obvious italian accent in French, but this is the young Placido Domingo!! His french did get a lot better over the years..French is a gorgeous language, but rather difficult to sing in, I find...Anyhow, brilliant singing!!

@@jesusmunoz2400 Je possède la version d'Alfredo krauss qui a des aigus flamboyants. Je trouve son chant froid basé principalement sur la technique . Il ne transmet pas la douleur, je préfère Domingo dont la voix chaude transmet l'émotion et nous emporte dans son personnage . A mon humble avis, c'est la version Krauss qui est démodée

no se mucho de musica, pero el sentimiento la interpretacion y su hermosa voz me hacen pensar que la mejor de todas las interpretaciones. aunque su voz tal vez no sea tan aguda como kraus o pavarotti, hace que sienta la musica en todo mi ser
It always makes me * smh * when I read comments claiming that the great Domingo is straining to sing high top notes. ALL singers exhibit stress while hitting a very high top note. Even baritones will show signs of stress doing so. I'm with Rossini on the issue of high Cs sung by men: no thanks. It makes them sound like strangling chickens, no matter who they are; it's true for some women, too. A flood of high B flats is a glorious experience to the ear and heart and that is what beautiful music is supposed to be. Sing what the composer wrote. As ALL composers not only allowed for singers to transpose to suit their needs, they expected it. They wanted the singer to be comfortable and thus produce a beautiful sound that the audience would like to hear. ALL singers, all, did it and still do it. Anyone who claims otherwise is lying. And they're jealous that they'll never be as beautiful sounding or looking as Domingo. Paz y salud.

i agree that a dramatic tenor is the best tenor for both the roles of Werther and Cavaradossi in Tosca, bt Tosca is actually intended for a spinto tenor, and Werther for a lyric. but I love Domingo or Corelli the MOST, in BOTH of those two roles. :-)
I confirm "Molti anni fa" is the correct form :) 1982? Domingo was a very good tenor and you can hear he has a tenor coloratura also when he sings as baritone. P.s. la multi ani is a way to make a good wish for someone in romanian :D for example wish a happy good year etc.

Domingo solo supera a Kraus en una sola cosa: Interpretación, Domingo no necesita un escenario, él actúa con la voz, transmite la emoción, el sentimiento de cada aria, y eso no es muy frecuente porque la mayoría creen que cantar es un sí agudo o un do de pecho.
Hernando Mejia Totalmente lo contrario. Kraus jugaba con el juego de intensidades vocales y la matizacion. Domingo como dicen muchos críticos lo canta casi todo monocorde. Casi siempre fuerte y no matiza. Por eso necesita exagerar en escena. Por su falta de matices.
Sinceramente creo que no se puede hacer mejor... quizas Kraus este a la altura, pero no veo otro, ni en la actualidad. Tambien es verdad que Domingo estaba en su mejor momento, en todo caso es una maravilla de tenor y orquesta.
TheFenix888 Kraus esta considerado el mejor werther de la historia por dios. Domingo en este rol lo interpretaba como si estuviera cantado puccini. Totalmente fuera del estilo de lo q es el canto francés en repertorio romántico. Su dicción Francesa también deja mucho que desear.

Domingo es un gran intérprete, además el francés es su segunda lengua, su debút en USA fue en "Le Cid" de Massenet y no en el Met sino en el Carneghie Hall. Si comparamos a pavarotti con Domingo en esta aria, podemos entender qué es interpretar.
Es penoso algunos comentarios. Si en su canto hay detalles técnicos que no le dan total perfección a la que algunos aspiran, estos no empañan el virtuosismo es esta cantante. El Sol en todo su esplendor, también tiene manchas, pero no son las que lo distinguen.
Mi piace molto: timbro e fraseggio adattissimi al pezzo. E pazienza se gli acuti, e specie il primo, non raggiungono la maschera e la perfetta intonazione; in questi casi non mi pare che possano fare la differenza. Ad ogni modo, Carreras, nei live del 1978 e del 1986 raggiunge, a mio avviso, un livello timbrico ed espressivo persino migliore.
This video has both the things I truly LOVE about Placido Domingo AND what I've always HATED about Placido Domingo. My Love: Few tenors have ever sung a piano as beautifully into the passagio (ascending to the G-flat on "O souffle di printemps") as Domingo does here. The sound is heavenly. My Hate: On the other hand, Domingo always relied on that cutting straight tone such as when he ascends to the B-flats on "Pourquoi me reveiller" with that pained expression on his face instead of having a relaxed free upper register with a ringing overtone like Bjoerling and Pavarotti could do easily. Just my $0.02

His face at the end tells a lot: Is it finished? yes it is, ah! more seriously, his voice is very well supported overall. The legato helps him do that.
@ellecho Okay, but that was, basically, everyone. There are also some operas with even higher arias. In practical terms, these operas are not so important, because they are not among the most popular, apart from La Boheme. In speed I mentioned Faust, but Faust does not belong to the most played.
