🤷🏻♂️ this is a damn good performance but his time has come. The squeezing and tongue tension has become prevalent in his singing. But this is no doubt great compared to what’s out today. Hadley did it the best though. Both were great in their prime
What I like is how the audience sits in stunned silence for a few seconds after he finishes. They're like "holy smokes, did we just hear what we just heard?!" Yes. The voice is amazingly rich and beautiful. His musicality is the highest one in this aria what I've ever heard. Im absolutely sure that he was the most productive and intelligent tenor in the XX. century and he is still living and singing. :D

¡ Grandioso ! como siempre. Leí todos los comentarios en este video y les pregunto a los que lo critican y atacan: ¿ Ustedes cantan ? Si sí, ¡ Felicitaciones ! , ¿ Lo hacen así como Plácido Domingo ? ¿ Cantan igual o mejor que él ? Si sí, pues compartan sus videos para aplaudirles, si no, cállense la boca y no digan nada. No es posible criticar cuando no se es capaz de hacer algo igual o mejor que lo que se está criticando. Así que espero sus magníficos videos donde nos muestren la belleza y grandeza de su hermosa voz.
Con todos los respetos, creo que se puede criticar en sentido negativo, siempre con máximo respeto a la persona, sin necesidad de que una se dedique en el momento de la crítica a hacer la actividad de la persona criticada. Por ejemplo, una entrenadora de baloncesto puede criticar a una jugadora, repito, siempre con máximo respeto, sin necesidad de que la entrenadora sepa hacer, ni siquiera haya sabido hacer nunca, lo que critica a la jugadora.

As we say in the U.S., he knocked that one out of the ball park! And, for me he took my heart with his voice. Orchestra is not on a par with Domingo and the audience response is somewhat tepid...did they not hear that supreme rendition?
@Love Music, some were clearly in stunned disbelief that they heard what they did and were caught off guard. I think they made up for it by bringing him back for another bow. Or maybe the French horns left them perplexed. lol
This seems so difficult to sing and he's climbing the heights and gliding the valleys with such ardor, muscularity and commitment. Certainly the audience there approved. Only the highly entertaining Yoothboobs don't. LOL

I was 12 years old when i watched maestro Alfredo Kraus (66 years old) performing Edgardo in Rome 1993... so funny to hear a 66 years old Domingo performing Baritons roles...
@Pekka K., no, his weight yo-yoed his whole life. When he wanted to, he'd trim down and still sound glorious. Same with Callas, Fleming and Voigt, to name a few others who started out zaftig but finally stopped taking their audiences for granted, or their health.
I've been studying this artist's career daily for the past year and a half and based on his appearance, it would be circa late 1960s, possibly 1970-71. Hope that helps. This is a French production and telecast. Paz y salud.
The years 1970/1980 Domingos voice was fantastic. Sometimes it is difficult to understand why a singer so famous became, if you don't know his best performances in the young years.
I think he widens too much above the passaggio, on the more open vowels anyway. But it's strange because it is also very forward at the same time. It's like he is squeezing the sound and trying to make it bigger at the same time. In anycase, I find him quite painful to listen to.
@feelgoog22, in fact Corelli, who had a great sense of humor, was asked by a reporter if he had any children. He answered truthfully that he and his wife did not, but then quickly changed his answer: "Actually, I have a son, his name is Placido Domingo." Early in Domingo's now baritone on-stage role performances, his umbrous timbre bore some of Corelli's tremulo. Salud.

@@robert111k Ahora saber de música se llama dar pena. No se si sabrás que esta opera nunca la cantó bien, totalmente fuera de estilo. No era para su voz, dicho por críticos y por todo el que tenga la más mínima idea de canto.
Domingo no nació para cantar donizetti. Incluso con la voz fresca y bella q tenia de joven, lo canta con su verismo de siempre. Para este repertorio se necesita más dulzura, matices, medias voces, pianos , legatto. Esto no es puccini .

@@placidotremendo Pues q canten puccini y no donizetti. Yo prefiero a los buenos cantantes. Sean puccinianos o de repertorio belcantista y más ligero. Kauffman una voz pucciniana q parece q tiene una patata en la boca y q abusa cada vez más de los falsetes en los agudos. Lo ví en Madrid hace unos días y fue un desastre. Está cada vez peor. Y tiene una gran voz pero mal utilizada. Corelli si fue un grande, kraus otro , por ponerte un ejemplo. Son voces diferentes pero grandes cantantes. Camarena lo es ahora y es lírico ligero. Al q le gusta la ópera le gustan los cantantes con buena técnica y buen gusto. Da igual si es dramático o ligero.

Pavarotti e Domingo hanno cambiato le regole nel mondo della lirica ''moderna'' ... ma vedo che Lei conosce poco la vera storia della lirica ... per la sua informazione prima l'arrivo di Domingo e Pava sul mercato nel mondo della lirica negli anni 1958 cantavano più di 40 tenori tutti Meravigliosi ,vuole i loro nomi e cognomi ?!... dopo Pavarotti e Domingo non e' rimasto nessun Tenore degno di questo nome. ancora mi ricordo cosa hanno fatto le agenzie di Pava e Domingo con i giovani tenori negli anni 1970-90 ! no comment il vecchio
Orchestra veramente imbarazzante, ma da dove saltano fuori questi? Addirittura il maestro anticipa l'ultimo accordo alla fine del recitativo appena prima dell'inizio dell'aria...assurdo per dei professionisti!
@tenorotti, Domingo is exactly like Caruso in this regard. Neither were high C candy dispensers. All that mattered is that they sounded beautiful. Get a hearing aid and read a book.

Una gran pena. Una voz con un timbre de estupendo color, y siempre queriendo engrosar artificialmente el sonido, constriñendo y encerrando la voz en la garganta. Siempre tuve la ilusión, hasta que fue muy tarde, que alguna vez le diera alas a su voz y la liberara de su encierro.
@@alejandroorjuela3504 este aria, Donizetti le sienta a Domingo como un par de pistolas a un Santo Cristo. Infumable. Edgardo es un rol pleno de matices, dulzura y expresión artística....y de todo ello carece el engolado y nasal canto de Domingo. Para algunos otros roles pues.....pero como Edgardo es un desastre que hiere el oído y la sensibilidad. Y los agudos pues ya......quizá ud. no es capaz de entender todo ésto. Le recomiendo que escuche Lucia a otros tenores (Kraus, Camarena, Bergonzi, Flórez....). Encontrará arte y sutileza, algo imprescindible en esta partitura.
El hombre fue un fenomeno de las ventas. Hizo lo que quiso con su voz. Ahora hasta canta como baritono. Despues de hecha la fama se puede hacer lo que la gana de. Ninca fue mi preferido. Su timbre metalico y estridente me lleva a contemplar con gracia los tenores livianos. Sin embargo, su ocaso es penoso. tan penoso como el de la Caballe.
Dónde escribió Donizetti en la partitura que hay que gritar en lugar de cantar???...Dios mío....que feo espectáculo realmente. Esto fue como poner a un pilar de rugby a bailar ballet...que horror
