His voice was so amazing. Even though he didn't have a solid high C, it didn't matter. His vocal line was so connected, so open, so beautiful, like pouring liquid gold!!!
Yes he was a good tenor before 1980s, beautiful voice. And he did have HighC in 1970s. Listen to 1970 Turandot with Nilsson. But then after late 1980s his voice changed.
@@waynewilliams4706 he is a good musician, but his technique as a singer leaves a lot to be desired. That being said, I'd rather listen to him than alot of the crap we have today.
THIS is the prime placi singn' his ass off. phrasing and vocal color is unmatched. the beauty of tone is unrivaled. ANY critic can put this LIVE recording up against ANY tenor and it will stand as just as good or even better.
At the height of his vocal powers. What a voice!! - such color and brightness. Such intelligence and phrasing. I love the dignity of his sound. It's so heroic and emotional. I know people say he should stop singing -- and admittedly he should -- but he lights up the stage when he steps foot out there, and even at half of his vocal prowess, he carries to the back of the house through the sheer intelligence of his performances. And his middle and top are pretty amazing, esp. for an 80 yr. old man!!
@sopranosd, agree with you in the main. He's a phenomenon still, isn't he? An amazing man and as our living legend elder statesman of the performing arts, he deserves the exception to the rule. Kicking him off the stage is the height of intolerance. How he looks and sounds is how someone his age is supposed to look and sound, it is not bad or wrong, it is different. He's still giving us his all. May he continue selling out the house (which he still does). Paz y salud.
Fully dissaponted with the Luisa Miller I saw yesterday in cinemas: in my opinion it is far off the artistic level of 1979's Domingo-Scotto-Milnes. Mrs. Yoncheva, what about stacatti and trills Verdi wrote in the score?. Next, I don't understand what Domingo does singing baritone roles at his 77; he must have taken honrous retirement years ago. Just Beczala sang at level but, in my opinion, he lacks italian expressivity. The expressivity Placido Domingo had in his best times.
@@jesusmunoz2400 no concuerdo contigo.
Domingo in his prime, when his voice was almost perfectly balanced between lyrical beauty and vibrant power. I never had the pleasure of hearing Domingo in person, as I did with Pavarotti, Vickers, McCracken. But I have corresponded with quite a few operaphiles who heard Placido at the Met. They all say his voice wasn't huge (think Vickers, Corelli, McCracken, above all del Monaco), but it was sufficiently large and powerful for Otello, not to mention his other dramatic roles there. And it wasn't just sheer foot-pounds of power. Domingo and Gedda were recorded live while singing "Giorno di pianto" from "Il Vespri" at the Met, circa 1974 or '75. Now Gedda was also a great tenor, but very lyric. He doesn't top the climaxes, and even sounds a tad pushy and over emphatic, as he often did in dramatic repetoire. But Domingo's equally resonant and larger sound carries easily over the Verdian orchestral onslaught, courtesy of the much-denounced James Levine --
+Mauro Ferrer Galiana ''bel timbro pastoso'' . .
Can someone please help me? I'm looking for the English Translation of this aria and if someone could tell me where to find it I'd appreciate it. Thanks and best regards!:)
I've never been much of a Domingo fan but this really is great singing. Too bad he just never maintained this level of singing after 1979. By 1982, he was singing with much more constriction and nasality and was never corrected and never produced the same resonance he sang with in the 1970's.
Not bad...not bad at all...Especially for an abuser...and conducted by the famous pedophile and rapist ...Well done boys! What amazing souls you both have!
