As a pre medical student currently applying to medical school I love the idea of scheduling your month in advanced! It’s so easy to allow things to pile up and feel overwhelmed but this seems like the solution so thank you 💜

I read “The Body Keeps the Score” for a therapy assignment a few years ago and it changed the way I look at trauma and how our brains work and process things. It’s fascinating!

I'm liking your vlog a lot and you stand out simply for the way you personalize the reading experience as a university student and as a passionate leisure activity complimented with your delightful tea selections, home interior paraphernalia and your eclectic taste for fashion which combines the vintage and the contemporary. There are so many take-aways as a casual observer: principally your reading diary, your flair for video editing, the constant streams of zooms, jump-cuts and close-ups of your hands flipping through pages or sifting bookshelves, and of course, the inevitable product placement. Haha! The experience brings a warm smile to my face, seeing you lost in the ecstasy of wintry solitude only Canada can conjure. I guess that makes me a fan. Body Keeps the Score is a LOT. I read it bookclub style with friends and we read and discussed one section at a time and that was super helpful for me. It became a weekly therapy session bc that book brought up a TON for me. The support was definitely necessary for me.

I read the body keeps the score around Christmas and my life since then has changed a lot. one thing I would recommend is maybe consider therapy so you have a space to process the emotions and trauma that comes up as a result. It really is a great book and helped me with understanding how my trauma manifests in my anxiety and in physical distress, but I don't think I would have gotten as much from it had I not been in therapy and had a designated space to explore memories resurfacing.

I loved the long way to a small angry planet! It’s such a wholesome read, very much character focused but with that special flavor of space opera that makes it even more special

I have to say, as a fellow short story hater, I really enjoyed the Witcher short stories. They're really something kind of in between short stories and a novel because there is definitely a narrative tying them all together, and I felt like they contributed a lot to the Witcher universe. I would highly recommend giving them a chance.

I love Seamus Heaney’s poetry! The Grauballe Man is fantastic, it was inspired by the bog body with the same name. He has a few different poems about the bog bodies found from the Iron Age of Northwestern Europe.

I sympathize with the amount of work you have for your classes. When I was in college, I used to think that all of my profs, because of the amount of homework I had, thought theirs was the only class that I had!

The Body Keeps The Score is an AMAZING book. It’s written very well for a science based book. It is very helpful for survivors of trauma but also people who have loved ones who are trauma survivors. It helps you understand them if you haven’t experienced it yourself and if you have it helps you understand your body and mind. Honestly… amazing. PLEASE READ IT! I kinda get people saying that it’s bringing things up for them but honestly I didn’t think it was triggering. It’s academic enough IMO to help you understand what’s going on in your brain and body without leaving you in pieces. And the last part of the book is his years of findings in the most effective treatment methods and he explains what isn’t effective and why not. I can’t wait until it’s safe to get EMDR for my mom who has survived more than I can imagine and talk therapy did nothing for her.

I was having the worst day, my exam didn't go that well because of which I was struggling mentally but this totally made my day

The Body Keeps the Score is so enlightening and helpful, especially in terms of working through your own trauma. It intellectualizes a lot which I find really helpful for understanding what my brain is contending with. I hope it goes well for you! I might reread it soon too so please keep us updated if you feel so inclined :)

Paradise Lost is so much more enjoyable when you read it in whole than parts, it changed the experience for me completely.

Actually, you did something to me/for me and I've just thought you may enjoy knowing that. I've been watching your vlog for a couple of months and you've got me discover little things I enjoy. For now, I can listed a tiny purchase of a notebook and a mug with Alice in Wonderland theme, I've asked for Olga Tokarczuk's book for Christmas, I bought some better cosmetics than usually and consider buying a good quality candle, because usually I don't tolerate normal ones and want to give a try with some a better one. I'm thinking about browsing ways to relax because I don't necessarily know many. To sum up, what I'm learning from you is taking proper care of myself and giving myself little treats that I usually give others. Thank you! PS. I'm very touched by the way you address us: beautiful people, etc. - it's heartwarming.

I've started reading The Body Keeps the Score recently and I'm certain I'm much slower reader but I've found myself reading a chapter and then spending the next week re-reading and trying to really process and practice what I learn. Definitely a book to take your time with ♡

I love Heaney. I did "Digging" at school. Audible has lots of his poetry collections with him reading them, which is great. This may sound weird but all your academic stuff makes me want to go back and study something. I read Solar Bones a couple of years ago. It took me a little while to get into it but I found it rather beautiful in the end. It is, if I remember, all one long sentence. I could be wrong about that.

I absolutely love watching your videos where you plan your reading month, Emma - so motivational with my own reading goals! - I got so nostalgic hearing about your uni reading and classes - missing it so much! All the best with all the tests and assignments! It's really incredible that Paradise Lost is given such a great emphasis in your degree. Sadly it wasn't the case at my uni and I had to scramble to get acquainted with the text well before I began my thesis😅. This month I'm focusing on finishing Barnaby Rudge (which I'm very much enjoying too!) and a Castle in the Clouds by Kristin Gier. I just finished Hamnet last night, and ahhhh it was so good and the writing just got me, you know?

I'd started reading the body keeps score this February and I'm really loving it so far. I tend to take it slow and dwell on the topics and like you said, it makes you confront a lot of things but in a kind, gentle way. I'm like a 100 pages in and I know it'll take me a while to get through. I'm excited to follow along with you and it'll be nice to hear what you think about it!

emma!! i recently read “small things like these” by claire keegan and it’s such a cozy winter read. i loved it so much and i think you’d love it too. it’s by an irish author, and takes place in ireland in 1985. it touches on the way women were treated by the catholic church, and how just a bit of empathy goes a long way. it’s a short read, i read it in one sitting, and i really think you’d enjoy it!

I feel so much calmer after watching your video… I could not be more grateful 😍 I used to make a preselection of books i wanted to read at the beginning of the month because i felt i had too many books unread and felt anxious about it so it felt more approachable. But then if i didnt complete that list, i would feel anxious as well. So i started just choosing whatever i felt like when i finished a book and even if i dont have that much time to read i have changed my perspective on reading. As long as i am enjoying reading i wont focus on anything else. No rush, no pressure and no anxiety. Books still piling up at times but it is okay now 🤩

I'm so glad to see The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet on your shelves. My favourite from that 4-book series is book 2 (A Closed and Common Orbit). Oh my heart.

Reading only women this month ! essays, novels, non fiction, historic novels... Right now I'm reading American Martyrs by Joyce Carol Oates, Murder on the Orient Express and the royal assassin tome 1 by Robin Hobb

The Body Keeps Score is a phenomenal book. I read it at the very beginning of the pandemic when I lost my job and helped me a lot mentally.

Ah Emma, I also hate anthologies but the Witcher ones I found very nice! They're intricately interwoven with their timelines which make them interesting and not just short stories for no reason. They also are the build up to the first novel. Although I cannot say too much about that because I'm only 20 or so pages into that one haha

I’m so excited that you’ll be reading some Seamus Heaney! He’s one of my favorite poets. I think his work is just astoundingly evocative of Ireland. I’m not sure if you’ve got any interest in Medieval literature, but I love his translation of Beowulf. It’s not the “preferred” translation, but it’s the one I ended up keeping on my shelves postgrad.

Why do you not like short stories? I see so many feel the same, but I love them! You can complete a whole concept in a sitting. They're easier to get through when you're pressed for time.

Long Way to a Small Angry Planet is such a perfect little morsel of space opera. I don't often think of space opera being cosy as a genre (something about the crushing dark expanse of space, I guess) but the way the Becky Chambers writes found family is just beautiful and heartwarming. Reading this was so wonderful that I psyched myself out of reading the rest of the series because I didn't want to be disappointed by it 😂

I had to pause the video, this is crazy but Mike McCormack was my professor for a semester during my Erasmus stay in Ireland at NUIGalway, I can't believe you have to read one of his books! Funnily enough I bought Solar Bones whilst I was there but when Covid hit I had to leave a few things behind including my copy of his book so I never got to read it, only a few pages (I had other books to read my first semester there and thought I'd read it later in the year). Anyways, I hope you like it, one of my housemates did read it for her essay and she loved it! I'm excited to hear your thoughts on the book!

A couple of friends and I are reading The Body Keeps the Score. We have just started and it is a tough read. It is eye opening and we look forward to continue reading it and with support we can give each other

I'm using the buzzword challenge to help me read through the physical books I own, so my March tbr is wuthering heights, justice in Moscow, the neighborhood and then I also have Mrs dalloway, the last wish, if I had your face and ayesha ever after.

i loveeeeee when you upload literally anything because it’s always motivating. i’ve always had issues balancing school and reading. i’m doing a masters degree in math and part of it is reading tedious research papers but watching this video makes me want to get back to reading for fun. good luck in school

Seamus Heaney is really good in my opinion 🌻

With the Witcher short stories they all follow the same character so I found they didn’t feel disjointed like other short stories so don’t be put off by that :) The stories are also super important for the main series, especially with setting up the background for the characters and understanding what the story is referencing too. I think the author wrote it with the intention of people reading the short stories first so if you are interested in them I really would recommend, otherwise definitely look up the plot before you start blood of Elves so you can understand the context :)

The Body Keeps the Score is an amazing book on understanding and healing from trauma. I found it very useful in my journey and it has plenty for every stage of that journey. I truly hope it does for you what it has done for me. Take care of yourself

I started “the body keeps the score” in an dark period of my life but couldnt get through it. It wasnt that must triggering but just a little bit to academic at that point. I’m doing soooooo much better now and been thinking of picking it up again and LO AND BEHOLD Emma gives me the motiviation to do it! 💪 I will 100% read along with you if you decide to pick it up 🥰🥰

I really liked the Silver Trilogy when I read them several years ago. Very fun read!

I’ve read The Bodt Keeps the Score and I plan to reread it soon. It goes through a lot and talks about therapy. My certificate on childhood trauma was more difficult. It’s a great read.

Hi Emma, I read the Body Keeps the Score last year, brilliant book and would definitely recommend to just everyone. Completely understand that it does cover some potentially very upsetting topics so do take care of yourself and make sure you're in a good headspace to read it. That said, just to reassure you it is handled very sensitively and there's nothing unnecessarily graphic or anything like that, as well as being super accessible. Such an important book, as a psychologist very interested in trauma and treatment, but also personally, hope you get a lot from it :)

Seamus Heaney did an _excellent_ translation of Beowulf. He kept the original stave rhyme format for his version and it's so good! Kind of bummed you now have Ireland covered :) I was going to heavily suggest "Angela's Ashes" by Frank McCourt which is one of the best novels I ever read, hands down :)

We share a birthday but Dickens is my favorite writer of years gone by because I first encountered him in Pickwick Papers, given to me by my mom on an Easter when I was probably about 12. Instant favorite.

Sorry can't feel what your feeling now. I am in Australia and the University year is only about to begin here! So no exams or finals for our students, they are beginning a new year! Good luck with you! I am also not a student but I work in a University! We process all of the materials for the branch libraries, which number @ 10-12 different library branches on and off campus. We also process and activate all the Electronic/Online material for students. Also March in Australia is beginning of our Autumn Season (Fall in US), which goes until end of May. Watching students on campus, I hope you balance your study and home life, I see so many students have a brain drain and they fall short of nutrition, sleep and time off for themselves during their final weeks. Take care of yourself during this time won't you?
