While everyone is talking about how much of a hero he is, I want to point out that the air traffic controller is a hero as well. In the given situation, there was no way the aircraft could have made an emergency landing at any airport but the controller acted with complete professionalism and remained calm to try and get the aircraft to safety.
@MikeHalsall
@MikeHalsall 5 лет назад
Absolutely man. In a day and age where we think mediocrity is everywhere, seeing people perform outstandingly, at an A+ level with ease in a world-news-wide event sets the bar for everyone. We all got to see these people individually do each of their jobs perfectly. And even if you don't think the one atc guy is a hero, what really matters is that the entire group performed heroically. Not all heroes wear capes, and there's some irony in there about none of the heroes that day having the power of flight. If you were in a seat on that plane that day, you'd sure think of all of those people as "those heroes" who got you down, alive and without a scratch.
@itsnotallrainbowsandunicor1505
ATC can advise, but ultimately it's the pilot that makes the final decision.

@big boy gustav so by your logic first responders shouldn't be classified as heroes because they encounter emergencies every single day and are trained for it?
@benjaminrapp7418
@benjaminrapp7418 5 лет назад
I mostly agree with Frank Lyons. If I were either of them, I wouldn't want to be called a hero. Maybe a shout-out for a job well done. As a private pilot myself, I understand how much training these guys undergo for situations just like this. But, I also understand the gratitude that the passengers and loved ones feel as well.
@user-ef8gy9dd5c
@user-ef8gy9dd5c 5 лет назад
@@benjaminrapp7418 I do lots of training for many serious situations in my job too but that doesn't mean I encounter them often, usually never at all, and when I do, I don't always act the way I was trained. We do repeat training because it's more likely to kick in when needed, doesn't mean we'll ever do it well. Being a hero isn't doing something outside of your skill set, it's standing up in the face of terror, remaining calm and remembering your procedures. That's really, really, really difficult. A few years ago I witnessed a car speed out of peak hour traffic, through a fence and smash into a tree. Despite the heavy traffic, only me and 1 other car stopped. I had done first aid many times and felt like maybe I could help. I couldn't get past D in DRABC (now known as DRSABCD) because I was so worried that the car might have a petrol leak and explode, I was also worried that the driver was dead and I wouldn't want to see that. Anyways, the 2 guys in the other car ran over and could see I was distressed, they told me to call an ambulance, I hadn't even thought to do that! So I did and they bravely opened the driver door and I could see that the man was hurt, but still alive. He'd had a seizure but didn't appear to be hurt too badly. To this day I wish that I'd done things differently because what if no one else had stopped and I'd been too afraid to do anything??! In relation to this incident, the pilots could have frozen and/or made mistakes but they didn't, and they successfully ditched a giant plane with no casualties! That's a pretty difficult thing to do.

@Lakshay: I think the movie recreating how unusual it is in real life for a plane to lose both engines at the same time. Very commonly is that you only lose one engine. You'd have to be "lucky" to lose both of them at the same time. That's why all of them were asking "Which engine?", and also why usually zero engine landings (gliding) have a high fatality rate - It's a quite intricate thing to maneuver a powerless airliner.

Don't be too hard on the ATC guy for confusing 1549's flight number. He was controlling 9 other aircraft at the same time, and did a tremendous job. This was such a rare event, literally a one in tens of millions of flights occurrence, that it caught everyone by surprise. The controller could almost not believe what he was hearing at first, and asked for confirmation. Little wonder so many ATC controllers burn out and move to other easier positions fairly early in their careers. The responsibilities and brain stresses on them are huge.

The film wasnt focusing on the incident itself but rather the aftermath and what could have happened. the focus is the investigation into what happened and could it have been avoided (landed somewhere other than the river, which is a very risky thing to do)

I soloed at age 16 in 1964. No- mustaches are not a requirement for a pilot's license. You have to be a true Professional as Capt. Sullenberger and his F/O, and the thousands of others I have shared the skies with, are. There's an old expression told to me by a dear friend and retired airline Captain- "Lawyers APPEAL their mistakes; Doctors BURY their mistakes; Pilots DIE with THEIRS. Capt Sullenberger SAVED all those lives with the help of his F/O and with ATC. Try going through an in-flight EMERGENCY sometime. It's a real "Button Biter!" This note dedicated to Captain Sullenberger, N310EA, and N904VJ. R.I.P.- the last two N-Numbers.

One of my favourite actors is Mr Hanks, so versatile in his acting how he makes you feel that it is really happening. And yes im sure you all agree with me that the real pilots of this flight should be knighted for their heroics and bravery for the day they did what they had to do to put the passengers safety their top priority. But can we all just take a minute to salute the ATC controller that day, the real man that relayed the pilots vital information on course, wind speed, heading, position etc... info to that cockpit in a mayday call that in my opinion played a 'key role' combined with the captains skill to ditch the jet in a way that everyone walked or swam free to live another day.

there was another similar story in Indonesia. in 2002, a pilot of garuda airlines named Abdul Rozak succesfully landed a boeing 737-300 in bengawan solo river after both of it's engines died and fell down from 28.000 feet. all of the 54 passangers survived but 1 flight attendant died after she was sucked out of the broken plane door. capt. Abdul Rozak actually deserve a movie like this !
