This week on The Horti-Culturalists we're taking a look at a group of plants that are gaining more and more passionate aficionados; Epimediums! And what better place to go and visit a great collection of these plants than gentiananursery.com.au/ ! We have visited Gentiana Nursery in the past to look at Hostas, New Zealand foliage plants and Bonsai, and you can see all those videos here: • GENTIANA NURSERY VISITS
And if you're in Australia and would like to become even more of a horticulturalist you might want to consider joining the Royal Horticultural Society of Victoria: rhsv.org.au/
The Epimediums we name in this video are:
Epimedium grandiflorum 'Album Nanum'
Epimedium 'Hot lips'
Epimedium sutchuenense
Epimedium stellulatum
Epimedium wushanense
Epimedium 'Mardi Gras'

Firstly I am so pleased that I found your channel. I am in the UK and it seems that most of the garden channels in the northern hemisphere have stopped for the winter. I have never grown epimedum, as I always thought that the flowers were too insignificant. Your video has made my rethink this. 😊😊😊

I inherited several epimediums in my new garden and was a bit unclear about their growth habit and how to care for them so thanks for the timely advice. Another great feature of them is that they are rabbit and possum proof, at least where I am in Tasmania!

Thanks for watching! Good to know your possums are averse to Epimediums!!

That was a great synthesis of the Epimedium genus! What I wanted to add: I am not sure if you guys have black vine weevils in Australia but I can tell you from personal experience (in Europe) that they are a real threat to potted Epimediums (less so when they’re in the ground). Thanks guys!

Good to know! We do have them in Australia! They found their way here in the 70’s.

Beautiful nursery. Great content especially with drought tolerant plants in this day and age. Enjoyed learning about the Epimedium Mardi Gras too. Long flowering is always a bonus. Liked the glasses, your styles and energy too. ❤ from Victoria, BC Canada.

I have Epimedium “ Purple Pixie”. Right now it has beautiful burgundy foliage. I’m in Pennsylvania USA. It seems very happy under the edge of a purple leaf plum canopy!

Funny. Just yesterday I was looking for some Epimediums for my new garden in Germany. Now I know a little bit more to what to look after. Thanks! 🎉

Do I dare calling myself an “epimediophile”? I have six different ones (so far), and they do really well in Northern Idaho. Thank you for your videos.

Here in my SE U.S. garden I sometimes cut the foliage completely out in late winter to see the new growth. Some that I try, do not need this for their foliage tends to look good all year, but if it does start looking ratty I will indeed shear them.

Happy new year. It is not uncommon here to cut back the leaves of epimediums to show off the flowers as they emerge. What time in the season would you advise to do this?
@thehorti-culturalists
@thehorti-culturalists 7 месяцев назад
I would do it in mid to late winter before the flower stems start to elongate. Regards Stephen

Hi I live in south Katoomba and have a Wollomi Pine, which I planted about 2 years ago and it's done really well. It's about 60cm high. New growth is emerging as per past years. However, over the last few months it's developed rust coloured areas on its leaves, Is this a disease? I Is it because it's dried out, or too wet? Should I leave it alone or do something to prevent it on the new leaves? Thank you Stephen.

Most likely a response to growing conditions but unless it gets worse I would be inclined to ignore it. Hard of course to be sure about anything without seeing the patient! Regards Stephen
