Hey Harli! Love you videos! I need to do this!!! Thanks so much for the idea! You mentioned the Hoya carnosa compacta and thought I’d just share how I have gotten mine to root. A big ziplock bag full of perlite, wet the perlite and blow up the bag. In a west window. And I got them all to root. I was shocked 😳 just thought I’d share my success in case it can help anyone else out

Ive just switched to perlite, It was recommended as a good way to overcome transition shock as the roots dont have to be separated from the growing media . I live in New Zealand and we make the world's top Sphagnum moss, and you can buy perlite and pumice from your local extinct volcano. I use sphagnum around the base of my hoyas in the summer and the have improved growth
@steviematthew

I do this, but I mix some rooting hormone into my sphagnum and I keep right next to an East Window. They get. Little direct sun in the morning. I also air it out once a week.

When drilling holes in plastic you dont need to put masking tape down first just heat up the drill bit ie with a lighter match and it will melt drill through easier.
@yargamesh

I learned a great trick from IG - if you run the drill bit in REVERSE then you will cleanly melt through the plastic without any risk of cracking!

Why is it babies always end up looking their dads after everything we go through for them 😂 You are both looking beautiful ❤️ Sending love from the UK xx
@PiquaLilly
@PiquaLilly 4 года назад
Not sure if you wanted a legitimate answer to this 😃but it's actually to make sure the father doesn't abandon the baby! So all babies look like the father in their early months/first year, to insure the father will love it and will stay around to take care of it. (Obviously not something that's very necessary anymore, but it's a cool primitive biological thing that is still prominent in present day babies)
@doriwilliams4772
@doriwilliams4772 4 года назад
@@PiquaLilly this is actually not true. There was a study done on it in 1995 but ultimately since we have found it inconclusive since. Funny theory though. And though you said it isn't useful anymore, I'd disagree. A lot of father's remain absent.

This is crazy, I've been calling this, "my humidity trapping method" and its pretty much the exact same as yours!! haha - One thing about the direct sun, is that it heats up the interior of the container. I've found this to actually be very desirable as it causes the moisture to regularly evaporate and condense on the walls /lid of the container. I believe this has a great deal to do with stopping mold and rot because it means there is an actual "water cycle" occurring inside the propagation vessel wherein the water is never allowed to sit stagnant in the substrate.

I didn’t have GREAT light for it so I was already worried, and I hadn’t checked the box for a MONTH until today, I was sure I messed it up. I have so many HUGE GORGEOUS HEALTHY rooted plants now, it totally rehabbed them!! Thank you so much for this video/technique! Doing my second round today! P.S. would love to show pics of the bounty, any place to post them? P.P.S. the moss is super wet and there is a lil green moss growing on some of it - do I need to pitch it and start over or discard the most part? It doesn’t smell and it obviously worked so well, I wasn’t sure. Thank you so much!!❤️

This works, thank you Harli. The only method that has worked actually, for me. But I think it worked so well that my roots got too intertwined with the moss. Be careful and if the moss is not giving, then let it be... because you will just pluck the roots off of your cutting otherwise.

I've been doing this same idea for ages! It works SO WELL! I put leca in the bottom, then moss, so I dont have to water as often. Mine are on my seed starting mat under my grow lights, so to reduce the mold i take the lid off and let it air out one day a week. The only thing that works better for rooting is fish tanks. Lol

I’m one week in with my prop boxes and everything is growing so so well! Silver pothos that I’ve had a really hard time rooting in water is FLOURISHING. I will say that whenever I use mosquito bits, they make the surface of my plants moldy, and the same is happening in these prop boxes because they’re so wet. No fungus gnats, but I’m still brainstorming a solution so that I don’t have to keep cleaning mold out of my plants/prop boxes! I’m going to try replacing the sphagnum and trying without mosquito bits and take care when I open them for air.
@austinmesta9862
@austinmesta9862 2 года назад
If it can kill a whole mosquito, it can kill the protective disease suppressive bacteria that tend to survive on dry moss. Pathogens don't do so well all dried out. I use black gold seed starting mix and either use it straight. I have lots of fungus gnats in my potted veriegated pothos with rich soil and compost but none at all in my propagation setups. Hope that helps.
@austinmesta9862
@austinmesta9862 2 года назад
Either use it straight or mixed with fresh spent coffee grounds* just don't be sterile or sanitized at all In there, but still be clean and tidy lol if that makes sense. Plants have bacteria and fungi inside them anyway so sterile isn't even an option. If u have sterile media, it's a buffet for the first mould spore to float in there. U want those spores to be outnumbered and eaten by lactobacillus and b. subtilis, pseudomonas, etc.

This is genius! My only regret is that I watched it a day too late 😑 I went to a local flower market yesterday and saw shops selling a bagful of moss but I didn’t buy it because I was thinking that it’s too early to build a moss pole to my vining plants. Didn’t know that it can be used like this. I have a few questions tho: 1. Will the propagations using this method adapt faster when placed in soil? (Compared to the water method) 2. I have a potted baby P. Brasil (just got it last week) and I think she’s not in her best shape so I’m thinking if I can also place her inside this without removing her from the pot or cutting it for propagation. 3. Can this method still grow leaves? I have few cuttings in water that has a shoot but it’s taking a while for it to develop. Thank you!

Loved this video ❤️ Do you have any strategies for “hardening off” the plants once you’re ready to take them out? I’ve been doing this with a bunch of peperomia leaves but I found especially the peperomia Rosso don’t react well to just removing them from the humid environment cold turkey, I ended up having to put most of them back in to prevent them from going into too much shock.

I have a two step process - a rooting box and a "growing up" box for ones I've potted up but are still delicate. I keep it less humid and it doesnt sit on my seed starting mat, so it's not as warm. After a month in the growing box they do better in my plant room. Some very fussy ones may need to sit next the humidifier though. Lol

I find most plants are fine cold turkey if you dont disturb the roots. Pepperomia Rosso too, try moving it from moss to soil but leaving it in the prop box for a further couple of weeks, then take it out

So great! I do use this method for props but some just won' t agree root 😄, lost walliniana var. And struggling with Standleyana variegata, seriously Stan is the worst rooter of all plants!!

Hey Harli... just wondering if you are straight up throwing mosquito bits into the box or are you soaking them and rehydrating the sphagnum with the water? 😊

A tea with the bits works better imho. I noticed mold with the bits just on top of the dirt in my potted plants.

I have a question about transferring from the sphagnum to soil. Do you have to get the sphagnum that has stuck to the roots off before you pot it up? If so how do you recommend doing it?
@HarliG
@HarliG 4 года назад
I usually just get as much off as I can without damaging the roots. If you pot it up with a bit of sphagnum still on them, that’s totally fine!

New viewer here, hello! 🖐 You said that this method would work well to rescue plants on the brink of death. How exactly would you do that? Would you take the plant out of its pot and soil, and then put it into the moss? Just put the whole plant in its pot into the box? I have a prayer plant that needs help and would like to do this.

To rescue a plant, you need to gently rinse away the soil and then check the roots. Trim away any rotten, dead, or sickly areas. Then gently place it in the moss, taking care to "bury" any roots or nodes. This makes a little plant ICU so it can start repairing and putting out new healthy roots.

Help! I bought my first expensive plant. Strawberry Shake top cutting!! I tried moss propagation and I checked on her today and her leaves are droopy and her stem is shriveled. Her node looks great. I threw her in my water prop station but she was my first time trying moss. Which I got from a PPP cutting. Can i leave her in water until the moss comes in 4 day?

@kyrad6543 4 года назад
This is a curiosity I have had for a while. When you have a longer cutting like that brevialata and it gets roots in several spots along the stem like that, how do you pot that then? Are you laying it horizontally on the top of the soil? Maybe a video once that is ready to pot up would help me to understand.
@HarliG
@HarliG 4 года назад
Kyra D you can lay it horizontally on the soil, or you can actually just trim the roots from the stem section off & only plant the roots that are at the end of the plant! Hopefully that makes sense how I explained that? 😬
