Plant propagation is one of my favorite things to do when it comes to houseplants. Using a prop box with sphagnum moss has become one my favorite propagation methods because of the high success rate when it comes to rooting cuttings and then growing them into beautiful indoor plants.
In this video, we’ll cover everything from the type of box and sphagnum moss to use, how to water your prop box, when to allow air flow, how to prevent mold, when to transfer your plant cuttings out of the box and then do a quick tour of the houseplant cuttings I’m currently propagating.
0:43 Why you should propagate houseplants
1:21 The type of box to use
2:21 What kind of sphagnum moss to use
3:06 How wet should your moss be
4:04 Placing a layer of moss in the box
4:45 Cuttings to use and how to place them in the box
5:43 Important to have your box in bright and warm area
6:20 How often should you open your box
7:13 How often should you water your prop box
8:06 When to transfer cuttings out of the prop box
10:15 How to prevent mold
10:44 Cuttings I’m currently Propagating Tour

I have been experimenting and documenting a second prop box journey with all different types of mediums and mixed mediums. I’m still getting mold and rot and no where near that amount of moisture in my boxes. And it’s definitely damp or wet enough. The Moss or perlite. Almost all my wet sticks definitely rot. Still experimenting and trying to just do a bunch of trial and error. Thanks for sharing!! Super helpful!

So jealous of the success with your monstera standleyana. I love them but struggle massively getting them to root. I have a few wet sticks with nodes and leaf cuttings, again with nodes in a prop box by a warm window sill. I will persevere! Would be great if you could also dedicate a video to monstera standleyana - their care, propagation, etc. There’s so little out there for that beautiful (in my opinion) aroid. Thank you for all that you do in spreading the grow love 💚

Great video. I just switched my cuttings to a 50/50 vermiculite & perlite mix. I find that the spaghnum dries up too fast. I would definitely use spaghnum for larger prop boxes though. You look exhausted and thinner then usual. Take some time to relax buddy. 😁 BTW the shop is coming along wonderfully 😁

This was VERY FASCINATING!!! I had no idea about this process or how it worked!!! Explains why there's someome down the street from me who puts cuttings at the curb from houseplants and from the garden, with a sign that says "FREE CUTTINGS" for people to help themselves to... I don't judge, but honestly didn't understand why people would take them (thought maybe it was for compost or something?? Lol) 😊❤👍

I started a prop box but I isr perlite. It works really well and fast. Pothos cuttings were the first test pilots, then the wet sticks. This is the best and most thorough, information-packed video on setting up and maintaining a prop box! I was just wondering - another plant aficionado on RU-vid said she drills holes in her plastic prop box for airflow and that she also places a container of water inside the box just for extra security in k owing there’s enough moisture. Do these things sound like good steps in your opinion or do you disagree?

Hey quick question plant community! I have a beautiful LARGE prop box and have 20+ varieties of cuttings (mostly tropical or subtropical and love humidity) and most have been in there for 4-6 weeks and little to no issues. They reciee 10-12 hours of light from a full spectrum grow light (attached to the lid via velcro). However, the tips seem to get "soggy" and brown/black in the last few days? Unsure why I spray it when it gets dry-looking and I also treat the whole box with Neem oil once a week. I get some mold sometimes. Any help on what's happening? Is it leaf rot? Does it need to air out more than once a day for at least an hour? I love the box and it will be my primary source of propagating.
