We're diving into planting bare root lupines. Lupines are known for their stunning spikes of colorful flowers, making them a favorite in our garden. Join us as we go through the process of planting bare root lupines, whether you're starting from scratch or adding to your existing garden.
When planting bare root lupines, it's important to set them out as the soil warms in spring.
Spread the roots gently with your fingers, being careful not to bury the crown to prevent rotting. In regions with mild winters, lupines can also be planted in early fall for a head start on next year's blooms.
Once planted, young lupine plants need regular watering, especially during periods of growth. Bonus tip: Adding a surface mulch not only suppresses weeds but also helps retain soil moisture, keeping your lupines healthy and vibrant.

Interesting seeing a bare root Lupine. I’ve started a bunch winter sown. I could believe it worked. I can’t wait to see how yours turn out. Happy gardening!!!

Love Lupine but they don’t love my garden. I’m inspired to try a couple more this year. Thanks for sharing!

They don't grow well in my parents' soil either... they are in south Georgia (lots of red clay). Maybe try them in pots?

Hi, do you ever get green fly on your lupins? How do you deal with them?

We had tiny little aphids last year: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IwjaNcDFKbI.htmlsi=R5HIPPuVNiF548L9 You'll see (and we talk about) in some videos after that, about how this process didn't work -- and we had to cut down the lupins totally. We had a VERY VERY dry summer (the driest in history) and we just couldn't keep these little pests away. We didn't try chemicals tho... that might have worked? But either way, we had to get new seeds and new bare roots this year and start all over.

You are going to need a bigger garden soon 😄but us gardeners always find space for more plants don't we? Lupins do well in my garden. My sister-in-law grew a lot from seed and gave me some. One turned out to be my favourite as it has two colours. I've not seen bare root lupins before but thank you for showing us what to with them.

So true! And we'll sell a lot of these at plant and flower markets throughout the season -- we started attending those several years ago and it gives Lars something to do with all of the seedlings he grows :) Otherwise, my goodness... we'd be out of space with just one tray of lupines. haha

I added a lot of seeds in fall. I discovered they fix nitrogen in the soil and enrich soil health.Planting them can increase your soil fertility. Plus wow are they gorgeous.

And the bees LOVE them, too. We’re really happy with ours here. Glad you’re a fan, too ❤️

I went back and forth on buying lupine bareroots and the amount of seeds I could buy as compared to bareroots. Seeds won but they are going to take soooo long to see flowers.

True -- you get way more for the money. We collect lupine seeds from our own flowers... so that's a big cost savings. You can try that too and then you'll have more budget for bare roots next year. 🤑

Thank you for reminding me that I have a couple lupins from the plant swap last year! Your greenhouse is beautifully full 😍 though a fridge full of plants can be pretty too 😂 Claus Dalby is the same, no wasting an inch of dirt 😊

@perennial-garden my lupines are up and seem very happy in the "blueberry patch". Thanks for the reminder. I can't believe I'm adding more plants to the garden, but I'm sure Lars would approve 😊 3 roses from someone redoing their garden: Coquitlam/ Anglia Love, a Canadian rose Teasing Georgia, David Austen Eden My friends are thrilled and already looking forward to more bouquets 💐 😁

@@Lea-zf7lm Lars will ALWAYS approve adding more flowers -- he's adding of yesterday, too! ...he uses the excuse, we can always move them later. haha
