How deep should you plant Daffodil bulbs? It depends on the type of Daffodil bulb you are planting. It isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer, unfortunately. Petite daffodil bulbs only need to be a few inches down into the soil, while larger varieties may need to be 6 inches deep. Always refer to the information for the specific daffodil variety you are planting - whether that is on the bulb seller’s website, catalog or package information -- it will always be included. I hope this helps! 👍🌼

my son got some daffodil bulbs as a school project about a month ago, weve been following the instructions on keeping them in a dark room and preventing the dirt from going dry, the bulbs have sprouted slightly so they're doing ok i think, but the roots are now coming out of the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot they gave us, how do i transfer to a bigger pot and do they still beed to be kept in the closet?

I'm getting ready to prepare some brand new beds for daffodils and this is exactly the info I was looking for...so thank you! I think I will try to do a soil test; My extension office doesn't offer them, do you have any recommendations for a test kit?
@GardenSanity
@GardenSanity 7 месяцев назад
Glad this video was helpful to you Ellen! I don't have any specific suggestions for a soil test kit, but there are many available both online and at major home improvement stores. Daffodils are not fussy about soil, so they should be fine planted in your new garden beds. The more important point is not to add all kinds of soil amendments thinking they will help daffodil bulbs at planting time. They already have all the nutrients they need already stored in each bulb! 👍😃

Thank you for such an informative video. Would you be so kind as to please advise how to and when to replant dafodils that have already grown and bloomed? Can I plant them now, or do I have to wait for the fall?
@GardenSanity
@GardenSanity 16 дней назад
You can plant them now! 👍 This way, the bulbs will have a full year to take in nutrients from the soil (which is what bulbs do) to prepare for next year's flowers. Once you plant them, add some bulb fertilizer worked gently into the soil around where you planted to help them get off to a great start. And then enjoy them next Spring! 🌼

I bought some mini daffodils this past Easter. They are in a glass vase with holders for the bulbs. They were in full bloom when i got them, but only have dried leaves hanging from rhem now. I have large daffodils in bloom in my garden now. We are in the mountains of Pennsylvania and the ground is still cold. Can I plant my bulbs now, or must I wait until Fall? If I waot, what should I do with the bulbs until then?
@GardenSanity
@GardenSanity 14 дней назад
Hi Phyllis -- you can definitely plant those bulbs now! 😃 Daffodils (including the mini varieties) need a full year in the ground to store up nutrients in the bulbs. Those nutrients are what produce the beautiful flowers the following year. Once a Daffodil is finished blooming, its bulb energy is depleted. So yes, plant them now. And for extra credit, add some bulb fertilizer around the soil where you plant them just to help get the bulbs off to their best start possible! 💛

Great info! When planting daffodils, will the use of compost help?
@GardenSanity

Don't add compost into the planting hole, but you can mix compost into your existing soil -- or put it on top of the soil and work it in that way -- after the bulbs are planted. 🙂

I am so scared! haha! I live in zone 8...Norfolk VA. I got 50 Daffodil bulbs from Holland Farms and the instructions say to plant immediately...with an exclaimation mark. So that seems serious! Our nights have gotten cooler for the past two weeks, so I thought that I was timing my bulb order well, but now we're about to get temps in the lower to upper 70's all week! Our nights will be upper 50's to the lower 60's. I don't want to waste my bulbs though! I was going to plant them today, but now I dunno if it's the best idea. I will have some leftover bulbs that I plan on planting in containers. I dunno. I'm a first year gardener and I experiment a lot...haha! I guess I'll see what happens! I mean, if I wait til it gets consistently cooler to plant them, will my bulbs still be viable?
@GardenSanity
@GardenSanity 6 месяцев назад
Hi Amanda! You can wait until temps are consistently cooler. No worries. Just keep your bulbs in their box in a dark place like your garage until ready to plant. I’ve held my bulbs sometimes for a month before planting and they’ve been just fine. Hope this puts you at ease! 🌼😀👍

Chicken grit will NOT deter squirrels from digging up bulbs, LOL. You said: "They don't like it apparently when their claws touch the stones", squirrels are totally used to encountering small stones in soil and will not be deterred by the addition of extra stones - if only protecting bulbs from rodents were that easy.
@GardenSanity
@GardenSanity 6 месяцев назад
Hi Suburban! While squirrels often encounter small stones in the soil -- like you said -- they are not fond of sharp-edged tiny stones, especially lots of them in one place covering the ground, and will find a new place to dig that is much easier for them. 👍

Ok question it's May my neighbor cut off the green and gave me 4 roots I planted it today is that ok or did I needed the stem too?
@GardenSanity
@GardenSanity 16 дней назад
It probably would have been better to keep the green leaves/stems on -- however -- once transplanted those rapidly die off anyway. You can plant the bulbs and just make sure to add some bulb fertilizer around the soil where the bulbs are planted and work it into the soil a bit. The fertilizer will help nourish the bulb as it stores up energy over the next year for the next round of flowers! 👍

Hi I read online that daffodils keep squirrels away, did you have this experience? I have many and want to repel them because they keep digging holes everywhere in my garden. Thank you for your videos
@GardenSanity
@GardenSanity Год назад
Hmmm... Unfortunately I don't think that's true. While squirrels may not want to eat the daffodils -- squirrels love to dig. And they're attracted to freshly dug up soil. So, after I plant my daffodil bulbs I try my best to cover the soil back up and make it look like it did prior to digging. Squirrels love to dig holes and if they find a bulb they may dig it up: that has indeed happened to me. Your best bet is to use a repellent like Bonide Repels-All, which you sprinkle around plants. They make several varieties. A Google search should provide you with several good recommendations of sprays and granules. 🐿🙂
@sveltus290
@sveltus290 7 месяцев назад
Daffodil are poisonus, so no animal will eat it, but if you fear of squirrel digging holes, you can cover the area that you planted the bulb with chicken fence maybe about 1/2 inch under the soil. I recommand that for other bulbs that animal like such as tulips or crocuses. Hyacinth are also poison and you can have a reaction if touching them bear hand.

Do you have any recommendations on relocating daffodils?
@GardenSanity
@GardenSanity Год назад
Hi Lisa, It’s best to wait until the foliage has turned brown. This is usually six to eight weeks after the flowers have died off. You need the foliage to remain in place to gather nutrients from the sun to help the bulbs begin to store energy for next year’s blooming. Once the foliage is brown, then you can safely dig the bulbs up and plant them elsewhere. Planting them right away after digging them up also ensures the bulb roots will have enough time over the Summer to get reestablished so they bloom nicely for you next year. I hope this helps! 🌼🙂
@allanreginald
@allanreginald Год назад
Hi Laura! I didn't get to fertilize my daffodil transplants last summer. Now they're up and some are just leaves with sporadic blooms within the clumps. I have a bag of bone meal, plant tone, bio-tone... is this the time to fertilize them? And using which one? (Note: I have not found any Espoma products here on Vancouver Island and my two bags were from a visit in Seattle) Or do I wait until after blooming? :D
@GardenSanity
@GardenSanity Год назад
Hi Allan, sometimes it takes transplants a year before they produce a full bloom of Daffodils. The bulbs will begin to store up nutrients for next year’s flower show beginning now. You can either fertilize now while there are blooms or just after the blooms are finished. 👍 I don’t recommend using bone meal, for the reasons I outlined in the video above. Since you can’t find Bulb Tone, using Plant Tone will be fine. It’s always more about providing nutrients to the soil versus providing it directly to bulbs and plants. Better soil = better bulbs and plant roots. I hope this helps! 🌼😀

If you plant the bulbs too close of each other, they will not bloom, so with years you have to dig them out because the multiplication of bulb make them too close. The positive is you will have more bulb too enlarge your garden or you can also give to your friends or familly.
@GardenSanity
@GardenSanity 6 месяцев назад
@@sveltus290 Definitely true! 👍Luckily, even though I've planted some of my bulbs closer than suggested - they are still blooming strong. It's always best to dig them up and divide the bulbs to transplant elsewhere like you said. This should be done once you see the blooming isn't as prolific, but I'm still surprised that my little Tete-a-Tetes haven't needed that yet. Maybe this will be the year! 😄

Hi Sarah -- Yes, it is similar to small gravel -- and has sharp edges that small rodents don't find comfortable. I found mine at a Tractor Supply store. I also have a link above in the Description Box for purchasing this via Amazon. You can use regular gravel -- just make sure it has sharp edges, otherwise those squirrels will just keep digging! 👍

Is it ok to plant daffodils that are already blooming in spring? Will these bloom again next year or will they only survive one Spring?
@GardenSanity
@GardenSanity 16 дней назад
Hi Karen, Yes it is fine to plant daffodils already blooming. I assume you mean daffodils in containers? Either way, whether the daffodils you mentioned are potted up -- or they are already in the ground -- you can dig them up and transplant them right away. As long as the leaves remain on them until they brown and die, the bulbs should be good for many years. They survive indefinitely! If the leaves are already gone or have been accidentally cut off too early, simply add some bulb fertilizer around where the bulbs have been planted. This will help give them the nutrients they need to store up in order to produce those wonderful flowers! I hope this helps!

It's best to use the planting depth listed on the packaging for your specific Daffodil bulbs -- as there are thousands of varieties (at least!) -- and if you don't have that information, you can Google your specific variety and find the planting depth. Every reputable website that sells Daffodils -- such as Dutch Bulbs, Color Blends, and my favorite company Longfield Gardens will list the planting depths necessary on their websites. I dont understand planting in the fall. My tree nursery also advises planting trees in the fall. It seems totally wrong to me. So, I ignore that good advice & I plant in the spring. The plant will have 6+ months of fine warm sunny weather to develop good roots & grow strong in preparation to the cold winter ahead. My mother used to plant her bulbs in the Fall in Indiana where it snows all winter long. I live on the Pacific Coast amongst the Redwoods It is not suppose to snow here but it does on a rare occasion. Climate change I guess. !
@GardenSanity
@GardenSanity 16 дней назад
It actually isn't easy to find daffodil bulbs to plant in the Spring. Daffodil bulbs are always sold in the Fall, as they need the dormant period to get their roots established and prepare for their Spring flowering show. 🙂 Trees, shrubs and perennials can be planted in Spring or in Fall, with a few exceptions depending upon the plant as well as the hardiness zone and climate. 👍
