Passion fruit flowers are a wonderful memory from my childhood, an older gentleman had a good acre dedicated solely to it. In the hotter months the wind would blow thru the passionflower field and on thru our neighborhood and it was so strong and incredibly fragrant. The fruit is so delicious too. As usual great content, been great watching the channel grow! 🌿🌾🌷🌻

@@CaliKim29 Kim they love the heat and thrive in India. I had a vine in one of my balconies and it overtook everything , unfortunately did not fruit for me because of inadequate sun ( it is possible it's flowering season coincided with those months when I have zero sun for 6 months ) and then no sun 6 months if the year . We removed the vine during building renovations . I have a pic from the outside somewhere , will share . I have seen this vine grow fantastic in Arizona gardens too . Always a pleasure Kim , I watch almost all your videos and leave a comment once in a while .❤️

If you ever need to repot something from a fabric pot, lay it on it’s side, push, roll, push, roll. Do that all the way around the outside of the pot, give the bottom a couple good slaps and it comes out. It kinda needs to have a sturdy stalk to do it, though. I wouldn’t do it with something like a tomato because you’d likely break it, but a fruit tree or vine like grapes should be no problem. Good luck! Sure wish I could grow tropical fruit up here :)

So what's the results? did it help control the plant? Smart pots help prune the roots because of air pruning, but if you put that smart pit into the ground, then the root is no longer pruned. At least that's what I'm thinking would happen

Cali there are 2 types of passion fruit ---1) the small purple fruit one the size little bigger than golf ball and the taste is medium sweet to tart 2) the orange coloured fruit which is the size of an naval orange and is commonly called “ Granadilla” and is more juicy and very very sweet --please try and grow both types. The type that you refer to as tasting like guava is commonly grown in Brazil and has a lovely aroma of a guava just coming from the fruit when you pick it .

Wish I had room for passion fruit in my tiny garden. I love the fruit! Are you not concerned that the edges of the planter sticking out of the ground will wick moisture out of the root area?
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 3 года назад
Hello, yes, passion fruit does take a lot of space. Perhaps you could grow some fruit that is more space friendly, such as strawberries! I've used Smart Pots for years, the porous fabric allows the roots to get more oxygen, and develop beautifully (as you see in video) more roots=more fruit. Due to the airflow, the soil does dry out a bit quicker, but worth it for the difference the airflow makes to the roots and fruit production. The drip irrigation will keep the soil moist. Passion fruit don't like to be too wet, and the fabric container will allow excess moisture to drain right through. Thanks so much for stopping by!

I've had a Passion Fruit plant for over five years and have not received any fruit. It use to grow wild on the edge of my parents woods in Alabama. My sisters and I would enjoy the fruit, which are actually called "Maypops". Now I live in Iowa and the plant I ordered grew pretty purple flowers, but they would not produce. Now the plant doesn't even flower. It is in my greenhouse now. Because you mentioned the large root system, I think it must be in too small a pot, so I will transplant it into a larger smart pot and let you know how it goes.

@lepidlover0557
@lepidlover0557 3 года назад
If you plant it in a sunny location, it'll attract the Gulf Fritillary Butterflies. If you plant it in the shade, it attract the Zebra Longwing Butterflies You may want to plant a good amount as if you're having a good butterfly season, the caterpillars can strip the plant 😅
@CaliKim29

@oliverisyourdaddy
@oliverisyourdaddy 3 года назад
So, I keep hearing that they like full sun. I also keep hearing that they grow super fast (sometimes too fast). So, would planting it in partial shade just make it grow a bit less prolifically and keep it a bit more under control?
@knexus5039
@knexus5039 3 года назад
This is what I've seen from many plants. When you grow it in conditions that are not ideal , but not necessarily bad enough that they die also, then it helps control the plant. An example would be Canna lilies growing in somewhat shady area means you still get some kind of canna-looking plant there but they don't get as tall and don't multiply as much. But passion Vines have an extensive root system so they do get nutrients and energy from several spots in your yard. It could be that the one Vine growing in the Sunny spot can still feed and proliferate the other vines in the shady spot. Or awesome it could reach the Sunny spot and then send up several shoots all through the growing season even to the point where you might not really keep up. So you still need to keep it in check.

In my experience the “air pruning” only happens when the roots hit air. My bet is that roots will pass thru that fabric like it wasn’t even there. Please let us know in a year. :)
@Inlieuofsue
@Inlieuofsue 3 года назад
I think the same. I've seen plants grow through fabric easily. The air pruning likely won't work if the roots don't actually hit the air when they try to expand.
@tlschaft1

Both of you are 100% correct. Just letting it sit on soil will allow the roots to pass through the bottom if it’s left in position.

I have been trying to grow for the last 3 years but so far killed 3 plants 😥. This last year I thought I had done it because it was growing well but then here in AZ we had a brutal summer with a record number of days over 110 degrees. I was told it would cover a 40ft fence easily. Also that the best time to eat the fruit is when it drops off the vine and is brown and wrinkly.

Hi Michaela, oh no! Hope you still have some left to try again. Maybe in partial shade to protect it from the heat? Thanks for the harvest suggestion, will definitely bring everyone along for the progress of this plant. Thanks for stopping by and good luck!

It might be invasive in Hawaii, but it's not invasive in Phoenix Arizona. Yes, it still grows like mad and it will wrap it's tendrils around any other flora you have nearby, but I think invasive is still a pretty strong word. If you cut off its water supply here, it will die fairly easily. California, would probably be middle of the road, maybe more invasive than Phoenix, but also not as much as Hawaii.

I did not see any tubing connected to the drip irrigation tubing. I don't like when you can see the tubing going into the hanging basket.

Why my passion fruit keep dropping flowers? I hand pollinated when bloom. I water and feed them. Three or more weeks. Flowers still dropped to the ground. Did miss something?

I have a passion fruit plant for two years now but grow very slow and no flowers at all. Maybe SF weather is too cold for this beautiful plant.

How did it go planting them in those planter bag things? Did it still grow tall and over the structure? Do you recommend / not recommend certain planter bags? And what size bag would you recommend for a trellis of similar size to yours? Would you do anything differently? Thanks. I want to put a 4’ x7’ trellis against a wall of my stucco house but I am afraid if I plant it in the ground its roots will grow out into the lawn. Thanks.

This was an experiment, SmartPots didn't do well in the ground... I took them out of the SmartPots and directly into the ground, and they did great. Nothing wrong with SmartPots...but now we know! In the future, I'll plant them above ground. At least a 20-30 gallon bag and it may not be as productive as in the ground!

I like this plant but honestly I would prefer to grow it to the side where I can look at it , compared to growing it above me where I walk under it, because of the potential of caterpillars dropping in on me.

How narrow can you keep it trimmed to a flat trellis and still get fruit? Can I be grown out of a plantar box?
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 8 месяцев назад
I usually let mine grow pretty large in the summer and get plenty of fruit. Experiment with trimming it close and see how much fruit you get. For container growing, I'd recommend at least a 30 gallon container, or grow a dwarf variety, and it may do well in a planter box. Experiment, do your research - that's the fun of gardening! Let me know how it goes!

Do you know how long till passion fruit vine will flower? I have one I’m growing outside in my apartment patio in a container since 2022. I’ve recently started feeding mine kelp and blood meal since this spring along with all purpose liquid fertilizer every two weeks. I put mine in a partial shade spot and only leaves are growing.

If you’re growing passion fruit vines from seed, it can take anywhere from 12 to 18 months for the plants to mature enough to flower. Sometimes it may even take up to 2 years. Plants propagated from cuttings or purchased as young plants from a nursery typically flower sooner, often within 6 to 12 months of planting. Passion fruit vines thrive in warm, tropical, or subtropical climates. They need plenty of sunlight (at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day) and consistent temperatures. They prefer well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter. Soil pH should be slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.5-7.0). Regular watering is essential, especially during dry periods. However, avoid waterlogging, as it can lead to root rot. Use a fertilizer that includes phosphorus to encourage flowering and a high-potassium fertilizer during the flowering season to promote bloom formation. Do any of these suggestions jump out at you, like "ohhh, I'm didnt know I should be doing that?" I hope this helps!! CaliKim

@@CaliKim29 yes indeed! I’ve been using kelp meal since last year since it contains potassium and sprinkle a few tablespoons around the base of the passion vine, scratch it into the potting mix, and then water it throughly. I do have a fertilizer that specializes in bud and root development so I’ll start using that and look for a fertilizer high in potassium since I’m almost out of kelp meal, thanks 🙏

I use an old eye shadow brush to hand pollinate, and I get so many fruits every year! I also put Dr. Earth fruit tree fertilizer every 2-3 months.
