**Apologies for “Adaptable” and not “Adaptive” in the Intro and Outro**

This is a technical plate carrier review of the Crye Precision AVS. Crye Precision debuted the Adaptive Vest System or AVS in 2012. The AVS would eventually replace the MBAV or Modular Body Armor Vest that was standard issue for some SOF units at the time and already ten years old itself. The aim of the AVS was true full-spectrum scalability: load-carrying that could go from low-vis to a full armored LBV.
Now, roughly 12 years after the AVS was introduced, GWOT is over. Threats have changed. Focus has shifted. Markets have evolved. Technology has advanced. The world is a very different place and questions about how well the AVS has aged have started to emerge.
So does the AVS still have what it takes to be a contender in 2023 and beyond? Stay tuned to find out on this episode of Qore Performance INSIGHTS.

the things that the AVS has been able to accomplish even though old and maybe somewhat outdated are incredible there is really nothing like it on the market that can distribute the weight load like the AVS and that can also match that level of comfortability

Got my first AVS system with new gen stks and AVS belt. I’m very happy and shocked cause of comfort of all in one AVS system, not only AVS carrier.

If the AVS comes out for their next Gen with the latest materials like squadron, laser cut, tegris, options for quick detach cummerbund, etc. that other companies are using I think it can remain King. I really like the Shaw Concepts ARC V2 plate carrier over the others currently.

My main question and the reason I would buy this is how well does the harness help in load carrying? I like it’s ability to use your ice vents but the only reason I would buy this is if it helps you carry a heavier load easier and I mean a significantly noticeable amount.

The harness is probably pointless if you've just got a couple mags on a placard and that's it. If you're going to load it up with all your kit though, I find it to be really amazing: snug and comfortable, even in hot weather. It feels like wearing a Rolls Royce. It moves with you magnificently too and distributes the load, as long as you place your kit appropriately. Your mileage may vary of course.

The AVS is specifically designed for *HEAVY* duty usage. You might not notice it immediately, but after wearing for hours on end (as most people who are issued the AVS do), you'll notice that it's more comfortable than traditional plate carriers.

The AVS is likely still THE best plate carrier on the market today for heavy loads (generally 20-25+ PC-only pounds). No contest, but you do pay more than just a monetary penalty for that capability as noted in the video.

My opinion of your question posed - "So does the AVS still have what it takes to be a contender in 2022 and beyond?" - my answer would be "no*". Crye products and the AVS baseline/suite of accessories are phenomenal in quality and fit/finish, which is why even with an armor system that is 11yrs old technology wise it still is being produced/supported by Crye, has a robust accessory aftermarket line from innovative companies (Qore, AXL, WTFix, MOS tactical, etc.), and still commands a premium price in the new/used market. But for all the great support and lessons learned by manufacturers or from direct inputs from users, the Crye line of products have not kept pace or introduced generational changes to their flagship products (JPC 2.0 was released in 2015) that end users expect. So out of the box, an AVS cannot complete or offer the same modularity that other high-end systems offer at the same price point - think Shaw Concepts ARC (v2) or First Spear STRANDHÖGG (v3). So do I like my issued Crye AVS - yes* - because I had to heavy modify it to make it better - AXL mircro harness, AXL placard adapter, rigid 2-band First spear tubes style cummerbund, etc. Would I buy it as a system if it wasn't issued to me - no. Even in 2022 the Crye ecosystem is what you get to flex on others because they probably haven't used/seen other systems - this is the reason "Crye or Die" remains and will go beyond 2022.

Those are some good thoughts! I really love the AVS harness for dealing with heavy loadouts, but have felt limited in some areas like you mentioned. I'll definitely be looking at those tube-style cummerbunds. That alone fixes one of the most 'dated' elements of the system. Thanks for the input!

What are your thoughts on the AVS harness vs. the AXL Micro-harness? I really do like the load carriage from the harness, but it absolutely sucks donkey wiener underneath a ruck. Debating on whether or not to get another carrier to use under a ruck and the AVS for especially heavy load carriage.
@michaelwright7421
@michaelwright7421 Год назад
@Mah Buddy Keith the goal of the AXL AVS micro harness system is to make the AVS more comfortable in the plate carrier configuration. This will make the AVS better for a fighting load, but if you incorporate a rigid cummerbund, you could get away with a combat load. The Crye standard (per the Crye manual) AVS PC config in my opinion is hot garage sandwich board style PC, that is only good for a super light/slick loads for short durations/vehicle ops. But the full Crye Harness is still hands down the best for carrying heavy full combat loads. I can only speculate that the AXL Micro Harness would be good under a ruck. The heaviest I carry is an assault pack for helo ops. Haven't rucked since SERE.

If the AVS isn't "advanced" in 2022 what the hell "is?" I don't feel like I have seen a PC that uses a way to distribute weight as this.

@@ericquintana1900 I didn’t like how limited the the cummerbund was. I feel like it needs more molle real estate for mounting accessories, and needs a better mounting solution in general. I don’t like the g hooks. I also had a hard time shouldering my rifle with the excess bulk it is made out of. I will say, it’s the most comfortable carrier I’ve put on. I just think it works best as a stand alone carrier, and the limitations became apparent once I tried to expand it out
