This song is about being betrayed by someone very close to you. He’s saying he now sees how they were fake the whole time. And once the betrayal was revealed, he finally saw who they truly were, and then said goodbye forever.
YES!! The cheating wife. But he does have a few beautiful talented adult children from his marriages. Of course Phil wasn't a perfect man either. Phil did write incredibly fabulous songs from all his pain!!! What a talented man!!! 💕
Always fun seeing people claim with absolute certainly what the origins and meaning of this song is. Of course you are wrong, Phil said many times that it wasn't about his ex or betrayal of any kind and that it really had no meaning. Read his book.
Another band with the drummer as the lead singer was Rare Earth. But in concert they sometimes used a second drummer for times like when they stretched the Temptations' Get Ready for over an hour. Rare Earth was Motown's first really successful white band.
The greatest drum drops in music history. Those of us all folks heard this song through Miami Vice. The young folks will remember it from The Hangover when Tyson was singing it. I’ve been a huge fan of Genesis and Phil since I was a child in the 80s. I was de-loved to Afghanistan in 2004 and after I got back I got to see this very tour in Oklahoma City it was a bucket list item I dreamed about since I was a child. It was worth every penny to see this legend.
I have read that Leland Sklar has played on over 3000 albums. I think it would be easier to list the major artists he hasn't played with than those he has.
I never get tired of seeing reactions to this performance!!! It's so much fun to sit back, relax, and watch someone else enjoy the ride for the first time!!!!
I'm an old, fat, white lady. I'm blown away right now! I also remember my 1st time hearing this on Miami Vice. My 1st introduction to you was Creature...with Jelly Roll and Tech N9ne. This version, is an old man, giving the fans what they want! He delivered! Period! The beat drop IS the Gen X battle cry! Find me a 50something that won't air drum the $h!t out of that!!!!
I am a 60 six-year-old woman who is watching you. Appreciate this music from my youth. And I'm just thoroughly enjoying this and God bless you for saying this for what it truly was.
what most people dont notice during this performance is that when he gets to the top of the stairs that the drums come up out of the stage on a platform. Its like a little surprise for the audience...they didnt know unitl the drums appeared...it was awesome.
The drums were not "hiding in the dark". The drums were on a platform below the back riser and as Phil walked toward the center of the riser, the drums were raised into position. If you watch closely, you can see the drums come up from underneath and the kit actually shakes a little when they stop rising, right before Phil sits down at the kit. This is why the crowd goes crazy as Phil makes his way into position. The drums are then lowered once the song is over. Most people also don't realize this kit has no cymbals - they simply aren't needed for the song.
Phil is an icon. He wrote this song about his divorce. HIs singing and playing the drums at the same time is so difficult and he does it with such ease. Love your reactions!
@@blakerh in the 2004 Paris concert live there are no drums on the upper level of the stage until this song. And then they disappear again after the song.
glad to see some of the older guys still playing and having fun, he is a Legend guys. Rock on Phil. This is one of several songs he wrote about his ex wife, they were going threw divorce when this LP came out.
His son is drumming for him now. His daughter is actress, Lily Collins. She currently stars in “Emily In Paris” on Netflix …and she gives updates on her dad and her brother…
@@KrizzKalikoOfficial Chester Thompson is the bald headed drummer in the video. Watch the live version of "Take Me Home" and you will see him there also.
Nice reaction. I worked security for a company that did the Genesis tour in the mid 80's. A little tidbit Phil traveled with a ping pong table and played every night before a show.
You are the first reaction that I listened to of this song that knew it from Miami vice. I can still remember when they would be driving & playing this song.
I love this...I love live so much better...My first concert was Bob Segar in 1977 in Evansville Indiana and I was like 4 rows from the stage and on the shoulders of a guy I know and caught a drum stick that the drummer threw out between my fingers...they played turn the page and the sax player was up like 40 feet on top of the speakers playing the start and it was so awesome...best concert ever...I was 17 and life was good....loved that concert and I would suspect this one was just as magnificant as that one....the old school concerts were the BEST....so glad I was a teen during all of these great performers....I just wish I could have saw Phil Collins...never did...so sad.
The thing about music that many forget, or perhaps, ignore completely, is this; it doesn't matter what the age, race, ethnicity, religion, gender or language of the performer and/or song is. Music is about telling a story, about giving a feeling to the listeners no matter who or where they are. Music is and always will be the language of the world, a way to unite different peoples through one medium and yet there are many who just can't, or won't allow this thought to take hold.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻✌🏻 NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING U YOUNGER GENERATIONS REACT TO THIS!😂 Back in the 80’s I was a young adult and we ALL played air drums when this song came on the radio OR one of us had a cassette tape of the album! These days music is at our fingertips. And btw, yep this is THE most iconic divorce song ever recorded! NEVER piss Phil off cuz he’ll drag your ass all over the world but dammit he’d have a hit song!‼️ I love Phil Collins and he’s got a great catalog of tunes u don’t wanna miss out on. Ya gotta react to Phil Collins and Phillip Bailey (from Earth, Wind & Fire) with their song called Easy Lover! There’s just one hit after the other. Fortunate to have lived through a time when the best music was made!!!💜💜💜💜GREAT REACTION‼️
@@KrizzKalikoOfficial 70’s and 80’s for me! Love watching your reactions to these old tunes! This is how I get out of my head! Just moved my youngest baby to another city and I’m one sad Mama right now so I need yall!
It’s so great to see this song still getting attention. The build up in the beginning and then the audience getting hyped as he walks to the drums gives me goosebumps. Epic performance!
I just found you bruv, loving what I've seen so far. I'm at minute 4:43 and as an 80s kid that grew up with Genesis (this was an ALL STAR group: Phil Collins solo, Mike and the Mechanics solo, Peter Gabriel solo, Steve Hackett solo; I'm on the edge of my seat to see how ya'll gon react when the beat drops at that "one" moment. If you read this, you'll know exactly what moment I was referencing. Bout to binge all your reactions. Cheers bruv.
I saw this concert and was in front row at the old RFK stadium in DC. Phil Collins he was Genisis and then went to Phil Collins. He can play every instrument on stage. I have been there. He, as arthritis so bad in his hands he can't play them anymore. He son took over doing the drums on his last time on stage. Love me some Phil Collins
Phil Collins was the original drummer for Genesis. He’s probably one of only a handful of drummers that also sing. He’s done many great albums. He’s been at the music business for over 40 years. You should check out his song “Another Day In Paradise.”
When I completed basic combat training in '07, on our march back to barracks from our final FTX, as we approached the barracks; the company had set up a line of torches and the intro to this song was playing in the woods alongside us for the last quarter mile of the march. Something I'll always remember lmao.
Phil Collins was a guest actor on a couple of MIAMI VICE episodes. Ringo sings, Levon Helm (the Band) sings, Roger from Queen sings, and the drummer from Night Ranger (sister Christian) sings. In the Eagles, yeah, Don Henley sings about half their songs, but Glen Frey, Randy Miesner,(take it to the limit, their biggest hit) Joe Walsh, and Tim Schmidt also sings a couple. Like the Beatles, ..the band, and the Eagles are ALL lead singers depending on the song.
The drummer for Genesis that played for Petrr Gabriel that took over when he left, at lead vocals. Went on his own. Had top 10 hits written and preformed by him. Top 10 in my book for his durability and skill !❤
I usually don't like watching the lives that much but wow...this one is truly amazing...and honestly, I like his voice BETTER live...seems grittier or something...and he basically sounds the same...not worse...heck, BETTER!
They are retired now, but when Phil could play he did. His body just gave out on him. He actually dislocated a vertebrae in his neck once playing the drums. I can’t even imagine. He gave us some great music.
@@nogames8982 shall we agree to disagree, when Phill was singing Chester was drumming, he often duetted with him, when the song calls for it, he did this for a 30 year period until he fell out with phill in 2010.
Chester Thompson is another phenomenal drummer who is playing with Phil here. He toured with him for decades. Thanks for sharing. Much love and respect from Baltimore.
Lol, I am used to loud music...I even turned up the volume on this reaction😂 I grew up on Led eppelin. If you want to see LEGENDS, check out their 2007 O2 concert in England. KASHMIR will blow your mind!!! They broke the internet when ticket went on sale. They are in their 50's and 60;s I believe. They hadn't performed together Since John Bonham passed away, except for a Live-aid concert. Robert Plant still has the vocals! Love love loving your reactions!!!!! Odd thing Phil Collins played drums for Led Zep at that concert.
This was the first popular song of the times ever used in a TV series from what I read back then. Miami Vice set the standard. Check out Glenn Fry’s Smuggler’s Blues which was on Miami Vice and Fry was also in the show as a smuggler. Check out Peter Gabriel “ In you eyes” live . He was the lead singer also of Genesis.
Phil Collins' first 2 (solo) albums were, basically, about his (now: "first") divorce (the onset, the event itself and its aftermath). Genesis' Duke also delves into it!
If you role the tape back to where Phil is standing on the middle of the stairs....watch the Guitarist reach down and hit the switch of sorts to bring the elevator with the drums up to where Phil will walk to. It just gets there as he does. Great video
This is the music of the 60s 70s and 80s it was the best so many different artists I’m so glad I grew up in this time period I think you will enjoy this journey
I am 61. I saw Phil Collins perform this live in Jan, 1983 when I was in college at Indiana University. I have seen quite a few great concerts and this is in my top 5 for sure. Great reaction. To sing that well while playing drums that well is very difficult . Phil rocks I subscribed to give other songs you have done and: or reacted to a chance. I was also a huge Sugar Hill Gang fan and knew all the lyrics to their 1979 song Rapper’s Delight. “ Hotel, Motel, Holiday Inn. If your girl starts acting up, then you take her friend”
The man with the white beard playing bass is Leland Sklar, a studio musician who played for a lot of artists, including Reba McIntire with The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia.
0:27 - MIAMI VICE - In 1985, Phil Collins guest starred as a con artist in the Miami Vice episode 'Phill the Shill'. He's also appeared in movies including Hook (1991) starring Robin Williams & Dustin Hoffman, where he portrayed Inspector Good, and Buster (1988), portraying Great Train Robber, Buster Edwards. Two of his songs featured in the movie became US No.1s, 'Two Hearts', and 'A Groovy Kind of Love', which also reached No.1 in the UK charts.
Fun fact, that beginning beat is an old beat machine on Boss Nova w the tempo cranked all the way down. If you guys got a min, watch the Miami Vice scene this debuted on, ice cold
This song is about a coming confrontation because of a betrayal. The song builds throughout and culminates that awesome beat drop that signifies the time of this confrontation and the release of all the building emotions.
He is a fantastic actor and he is acting out this song as he stalks the stage. He is stalking the person whose downfall is coming (ex wife I believe) and letting them know, he is waiting for this and he remember EVERYTHING they did to him. When he is walking up the stairs on the line "I remember, I remember don't worry...." and he turns to look into the camera on the second "remember" and glares, it gives chills. He is an ICON
Phil Collins wrote the song during the grief he felt after divorcing his first wife Andrea Bertorelli in 1980. The divorce contributed to his 1979 hiatus from Genesis, until the band regrouped in October of that year to record the album. I have also saw him in an interview say that he was just in a very bad mood in the 80’s as he laughs!👍🏻😁🏴
