Demo'ing Demos is a new video series here at Import Gaming FTW that simply does just that--demo demos, particularly Japanese ones. First up is the preparation edition" of Play Play PlayStation, the Japanese equivalent to the West's PlayStation Underground CD magazine service. Play Play was the main perk for members of the PlayStation Club in Japan, and had a long run of demos. This particular demo contains two CDs that contain Demo Demo Special and Play Play #0.

I wonder how this video will be received? Probably not as well as other stuff here on the channel, but I know I'm not the only fan of demos, so hopefully a few of you out there find something to enjoy with this one. My goal was to keep the video length under ten minutes, preferably around five...I failed.

I like this new series. As a self professed game-data hoarder, I have all of these demos downloaded, but usually just choose one at random to see what's on it. I'll be checking out these demo discs as you release more videos. Is this one titled, PrePre Soukan Junbi-gou - DemoDemo PlayStation Special?

Yo Jimmy that was a nice one! I loved the Demos for PS1 back then cause no other console (beside the mighty Dreamcast) gave us the chance to play new and upcoming games. This T-Rex Demo is so iconic ^^ Oh and thanks for shining a little light on Philosoma. Never heard of it but it seems pritty cool. I´ll put in on my shopping List for my next Japan Vacation ;)

The fan suggested game creation was also mimicked by the PlayStation Underground, but in later editions. The video series can also be found on RU-vid. What great gem of a video on PlayStation history! Thank you for this!

That whole Demo Demo/Playstation Club commercial is basically a tentacle monster having his privacy invaded by a human, which is quite the reversal. He even yells for the human to stop touching him!

I approve of this new series. I definitely have a lot of nostalgia for those PlayStation Underground Jampacks that used to come out several times a year. Not just for the demos, but for the videos of stuff like cheats, import games, etc. That was what made me want a PocketStation was watching a video where a guy from Capcom was using one to play SF Zero 3 mini games.

I love demos/trials, especially ones that have cool things like games that were never finished, games that changed quite a bit upon final release compared to early demos, or discs that had content unlocks for current games. Please keep this train rolling!

Gotta love the "anything goes" attitude of some of these early development days. Aquanaut's Holiday brought back some fond memories of playing Treasures of the Deep from an old (I think) Playstation Magazine demo disc. It also had Metal Gear Solid and Fighting Force demos on that disc also. Man that was a long time ago... Solid video though Jimmy.

Great video dude, can't wait to see how these evolve so hope you continue covering them. I always remember the dinosaur on the Demo 1 disc we got in the UK. Glad someone else collects demo's too, used to always anticipate a new one each month from magazines and in the post.

Thank you, I'll keep making them! And that dinosaur is so impressive, I didn't realize it was in other demos outside of Japan, but it makes sense that Sony would want to show off as much as possible. It might have been because I was younger, but gaming today just doesn't feel as exciting as it used to.

Awesome video. Really looking forward to this series of videos!! I love demo discs myself and have fond memories of them being sometimes my only exposure and opportunity to play so many games being a preteen when PSX came out here in the states. I actually picked up this entire set including 0 from a Japanese seller on ebay in 2017-2018. It was pretty affordable even then, i think about 2-4$ per volume. It's one of my favorite pieces of my collection. An incredible look into the entire Japanese PSX culture of the 90s. It's absolutely mesmerizing for a purely Western PSX fan. My import PSX game library is only about 25 games and most of international acclaim so getting a more in depth look into the Japanese state of things is priceless. Time machine into the home of PlayStation and center of the gaming universe at the time, 90s Japan. The 2000s and rise of the internet really brought gaming to an international community level but in those days it was very fragmented with little too no exposure to what's happening in the different regions of the globe gaming-wise. Japan, US, Europe and even Brazil were all surprisingly different when it came to gaming culture (and regular culture too of course). Information didn't flow as freely. A different time. Globalization really changed everything in the 2000s

Was always curious about these side promotion bundles/conceptions that were mainly exclusive to Japan. Grew up with none of it since my parents really didn't like video games, even though they did indulge me to an extent. Now I have the time to revisit all these odd marketing ideas that many gaming companies did to try to get new gamers on the platform (and keep current ones). PP Playstation was actually next on my list of research, glad to know I no longer have to go digging around all by myself. Thanks for doing all the hard work while I sit back and enjoy the show lol.

Love me some demo discs. Saw a video a while back about some obscure US demo discs given away with Pizza Hut. Lord knows what channel that was though. Also, outraged that we didn't get the muscleman demo here? My PS1 came with a disc that had the dinosaur and I think a dolphin, but now I see this it could have been the manta ray. I can't remember that far back. It was literally in another century.
@ImportGamingFTW

I had the first Pizza Hut demo disc--like ten of the same one, actually. I asked the pizza guy about it and he just gave me every one he had, so I ended up giving away most of them to friends at school. It was surreal that PS1 was so popular it came with pizza...it was a real sign of the change in the gaming industry of the time!

_"Whatcha gonna do, brother, when Demo Demo and Play Play Mania runs wild on YOU!?"_ -- you may claim this isn't an accurate translation, but we ALL know in Japan, Ken Kutaragi refers to Playstation fans of a certain age as, "all the little Play Play Maniacs out there" and now we know why :P Looking back at this and showing it off _was awesome;_ I'm super happy to see the Demo'ing Demos series off to a good start! Though there's something _super_ bittersweet about you dropping this today when so many recent rumors/reports are coming out that Sony's winding down their Japanese operations (despite Jim Ryan vehemently denying it... despite several, ongoing, high profile departures over there constantly proving his words to be empty). EDIT: Actually while I was typing this I checked PushSquare and they made it official using the dreaded corporate speak term, "Restructuring." _sigh_ Man, Sony could *not* seem farther from their roots than they do in 2021 now and that is depressing when you show stuff like this off and show just how fun, creative and vibrant Sony's Japanese output used to be. It's literally system and brand defining. They have so little personality now... heck, I hate that they do those lame, cheapo Nintendo copycat "State of Play" things now too. I mean, they have a history of doing _more_ with demo discs in the past, in _every region._ Why can't they go back to doing that kind of thing, dropping demos, showing off behind the scenes footage, etc. instead of just plopping out a couple trailers on social media like Nintendo? That's freakin' lazy. It is genuinely sad. I love Horizon as much as the next guy, but ESPECIALLY when you contrast it with older stuff like this, Jim Ryan's Sony feels real soulless right now... I bet he did NOT join the Playstation Club, _baby_ I miss this kind of stuff, and I'm happy to see it in action. It *should* be remembered. The commercials, the trailers, the demos, the would-be mascot characters, the comics... this stuff is all great! Thanks for translating the comic btw, but _not_ explaining the random mustache Rock is sporting at 13:33. The air of mystery around it just makes Rock more powerful (^-^)
@ImportGamingFTW
@ImportGamingFTW 3 года назад
I always appreciate the thorough and thoughtful comments, Mr. Flash. I had no idea about the new changes at Sony and probably won't look into it myself as I've kind of lost interest in most parts of the modern gaming industry, but I'm sorry to hear things are being "restructured." It's funny, even with the Play Play demos, the originality and fun that the first 19 volumes had were wiped away with Play Play Plus and the PS2 series. The mustache? Ha ha, well, I would assume it makes him look more scholarly, like Soseki Natsume or something. There may be a direct reference I am missing, though!

I actually had a blind box Goemon stage set that had a keshi Ebisumaru and Goemon and a TON of Rockman & Forte blind box keshi among other things I got there... But yeah then it switched to a Mitsuwa and they moved the Kinokuniya books and CD shops outside to a separate building in the same shopping center. They also eventually opened up a Daiso there and for a long time we had a User's Side which only had two other branches, in Japan. XD It was cool being able to go there and get old Japanese promo posters for video games. I really wish I'd kept them all but I got rid of a lot of that stuff when I moved years ago. It kinda sucks. I still have a bunch of the Neo Geo Freak posters I framed though, and I think I may have a box full of old memory card stickers and stuff like that from those mags but I'm not sure.

Not sure if you got notified of the last handful of videos, but it seems to be a common problem. I'm glad you got this one and stopped by, though!

I doubt the play play discs continued through the PS3. :(

There were a few official Sony demos for the system, a couple of which I own, but they lack the creativity and fun of the initial run of Play Play, sadly.
