A few things not covered at length in the video: - “Can I run game x?” How do I run game x”? Check the Mac Gaming Wiki or r/MacGaming on Reddit. I have only tried several games. I cover the Mac Gaming Wiki in the video but it is an incredibly useful resource, and contains information from many people’s experiences. - crossover video coming soon - Intel Mac users have the ability to native boot Windows negating the necessity of GPTK as you’ll get native performance - I didn't try Epic game store, there is a reddit thread recommending use of Heroic Game Launcher. If someone is willing to try, Heroic or just using the steam method please reply in the comments and I'll credit you. www.reddit.com/r/macgaming/comments/14g3qeq/how_do_i_use_the_epic_games_launcher_with_gptk/ - Crossover is a superior solution as it works with older Direct X thus has much more compatibility and also uses GPTK for DX12 (in a recent update) and has per title configurations available. Codeweavers (makers of Crossover) were involved in creating GTPK. - You can use external storage with whisky. Just google for “Mac whisky external storage” or such. There’s Reddit threads on it. It’s pretty easy. - A few commenters are pointing out you could buy a gaming PC which while true is also silly. People have different priorities be it wanting a native *nix OS with wide commercial software solutions or for certain software suites that are Mac only (Logic, Final Cut Pro, Xcode, Sketch, etc) or have it for primarily work. Not everyone has the budget for multiple computers or desire or space or whatever. Inversely: If you can buy a gaming PC, maybe you should buy a Mac for media / development capabilities? It cuts both ways.
@@ladeluff_ Yeah, I tried it and didn't end up purchasing it, largely because I have a Mac Pro 2019 and my RU-vid vids do not make enough money to really justify purchases as I'm very unlikely to make it back off a single video. I've heard it's gotten better especially with GPTK
thank you! i can only use my windows laptop for work and i do not see the need to switch to a gaming pc/laptop when i prefer using my macbook for all my personal stuff.
If you want a definitive upgrade then go PC. Get a laptop with a Ryzen 7840HS or Intel's new Meteor Lake. These both support AV1 encoding unlike Apple.
@@DukenukemXHe wants a reliable quality MacBook, not a crap PC with windows junk, viruses, BSOD, 24/7 windows updates, crap touchpad, sound, screen, battery and have to be tethered to the wall 99% of the time! So getting these games on a MacBook is the cherry on the top until Games take off on the Mac with Apple GameKit and HW RayTracing on M3.
Would be very nice if Apple supported the open source community by making a Vulkan driver or just releasing the documentation so people could make custom drivers
@@kittenzrulz2314 Apple doesn't need it, they only care about their own revenue and that's all. That's why they can't even make their own toolkit, they just rebuild other people's open source code. Even brew for macOS has nothing to do with macOS itself, it's not macOS development. At the same time windows, no matter how bad it is, goes towards developers and users, allowing them to run native Linux applications, including windowed ones, in the operating system itself. That's the difference...
Linux on Apple Silicon already beats macOS in terms of OpenGL support and it won't be long before it brings native Vulkan to the table. With that, gaming on a Mac will mean dual-booting Linux
thank you so much for also including the written tutorial!! its so easy for video tutorials to become outdated, having a written companion keeps it up to date.
To the people commenting that you should "buy a pc" ... how would you feel if you clicked into a recipe that said "Sicilian Style Meatballs" and all it said was that you should travel to Sicily? It's obvious that people looking for this info aren't interested in that option
That's 12 year olds on the Internet for you they don't understand that macbooks are used for work and productivity and not every device main purpose is gaming. This video is great if you're on a business trip for example and you can bring so much. A PC or heavy ass gaming laptop is out of the question but you still want to do some light gaming. Apple silicone would be a perfectly capable single device for that.
Thanks for showing this! I was so psyched about the dev package when they first announced it but I was really frustrated when I couldn’t get it working
Yeah, I tried it very very early on as I saw it announced I think on r/Macgaming and had a rough experience. I put it in my "Video Ideas" notepad and was thumbing through it and decided to see if it had improved to the point it'd be a good video topic. It had.
Ha, thanks. There's a lot of random non Mac users here telling Mac users to buy a PCs. I have nothing against Windows or Linux but it'd be like going to Proton tutorial and telling Linux users to buy Windows as if this was never considered.
Nice tutorial. Was able to get everything installed and able to play Dinkum on my Mac… was just playing it in desktop mode on my Steam deck - it runs and looks great on my M2 Mac Mini….
As I was watching this video I was wondering if "need" this and then you mentioned Dinkum! I do have a PC but it's been problematic since start. I'm planning a complete reset this summer, and if that fails I'll try this app. I miss Dinkum!
and OH. last weekend, i got a 5.1 REALLY fly on ZorinOS (my fav ubuntu distro) with a RX 480. The Mac is sheer Supersnappy now, even flies on my Windows Steam Library, Remarkable faster than vanilla windowsinstall/ boot drive... :D
Hi, I have been trying to do this on my mac but whenever I click on “run” and on “steamsetup” nothing works. I’ve checked, my mac is an M2 chip and should be apple silicone. I’ve tried to delete everything and try again but nothing has worked so far. What should I do?
Also in my MAC it doesn't work.....I noticed that when I installed whisky there is no gptx icon but something like whiskywine....don't know how to fix it
Excellent work thanks to the community for all the work done! My M2 silicon runs Avogadro visualization tool and VMD (tools for computational chemistry). Just amazing...
Hello! I have issue with Whisky. During the installation process, pop up with necessary dependencies for Whisky contains only Wine, not GPTK as in your video. My hw is macbook pro M1 (2020) and the most recent update of Sonoma is installed I didn’t find any information about this issue or any solutions, so I’ll be very thankful if you drop me some advice
It seems that an ancient technology of wine is finally on aarm. Thank you for the guide, pretty straightforward. Too bad we need to use something like this instead of getting native support for MacOS. Makes me feel like most MacOS users don't use their system for anything but web browsing.
Gaming and web browsing aren't the only things that exist on a computer. Content creation and creativity apps are widely considered to be a better experience on mac
@@asinglefrenchfry I'm not saying MacOS is not suitable for such tasks. I'm working with machine learning on s base model M1 MBA myself and it's great. I'm just saying that most Macintosh owners don't really use their computer for anything but web browsing
@@mori7423 The same could be said for most window PC users as the majority of individuals engage in basic tasks rather than using their computer as a tool for more intensive applications. This is evidenced by the amount of computers that are purchased which are essentially entry level versus those who seek to use the computer as a more in depth tool and require specialized builds.
@@snoozeyoulose9416 and it also seems kind of obvious to me that the majority of gaming computers are running windows. It's clearly seen in steam statistics reports
It’s an open source project that’s based on Wine that has contributions by Apple and Codeweavers. You can go literally read the source code. It’s as safe as about any software thanks to visibility.
When I was running DMC5 the game crashed and I couldn't force quit so shut down my mac, when I went back on steam DMC5 was deleted but still takes up space on my storage, do you know how to fix that?
You absolutely are the BOMB man. Talk about setting a precent when it comes to delivering a tutorial. Such high quality. Thank you so much - That's an EASY subscribe my man.
Thanks. Not all my videos are tutorials but probably in the same sphere is my emulation tutorials for PSX, PS2, and PS3 emulation and AI art tutorials where I try to speed run a lot of info with zero filler.
I have a problem where whenever i try to download something it says steam has no wifi and i dont know how to fix it. My wifi is working perfectly fine but not for whisky
@@Azrael-xl3jlbrother I need help like crazy. I have a Mac book pro from 2020 and just bought the Ultimate edition of New Vegas. I’m dying to play but I can’t even download whiskey
For the record, I did use Buchan but one time ago. It’s like the license problems and I don’t wanna pay bro so that’s why I’m already buying an M1 got a good deal but sweet.
Thanks for the tutorial. Very easy to set up. Sadly, doesn't work with the older games I want to run (as you explained). The state of Mac gaming on Apple Silicon is depressing, tbh. Anything non-native has so many stipulations, and I don't blame Apple directly for this because these games weren't made for ARM, but I do think seeing as how the M1 chip came out over three years ago, it's annoying that Apple hasn't come up with a streamlined solution (because that's usually what Apple is good at). Linux in 2015 was legitimately in a better place for gaming than Mac is now in 2024.
This isn't working on my M2 air. I uninstalled and reinstalled everything and still no go. After I click run, the circle will appear but then go away with nothing happening. Any idea what I could be doing wrong?
I did everything what you said. And when i click play from steam on gta V it pops up an error saying “ the rockstar games launcher failed to initialize!” What should I do?
i've tried both whiskey and crossover and surprisingly crossover which is paid gives twice the frame rates in every game so i made a decision and bought yearly subscription to crossover and i think it was worth it
Not really, Code Weavers (makers of crossover) help to make GPTK. Crossover supports, older, direct x and Das has much wider compatibility, and also more configurability even when using the GPTK engine for DX12.
You guys are not totally doomed, I did find out if you use parallels desktop 15 on Big Sur you can in fact run pc games on a windows vm using your dedicated gpu using gpu pass through thanks to parallels desktop.
I have both and find it interesting to be able to unlock the potential with the mac laptop on the go. It's got a mini LED 16 inch display with TV level speakers and incredible battery life. Plus it makes little in the way of fan noise under load. Perfect to play a game or two while dealing with down time such as evenings in a hotel. I've got a m1 Max 32 gpu cores with 64gb of ram... should be interesting to see it in action with PC games. On native Apple games, everything flies so curious what I can get performance wise with the ARM Architecture. Hoping the Yakuza series by SEGA is compatible. Yeah, I didn't buy the mac laptop for gaming but if it can play PC games and I find myself twiddling thumbs...right on.
Is there a way this could run a non gaming application? I've tried installing a software we use in the office, it did install but doesn't run. Any workaround? I'm trying to get off parallels as it eats a lot of disk space. And I juyst need to run that 1 application so installing a whole OS is not what I'm looking for.
I see your point. I’m a Mac user since 2015 but occasionally I want or need an application for work or leisure (game) that is only available for Windows and in those cases I run them through Parallels Desktop, which works just fine in most cases. If one of your main use cases is gaming I would not recommend a Mac before a Windows based system.
@@dmug I have the base model MacBook Air 15in. It has 8gb of ram and 256gb of storage. I paid almost $1400 out the door. I have a gamming laptop that is a beast. High refresh rate display and 16gb of ram. Along with 1tb of storage. I paid $850 for it. It is a no brainer for gaming. MacBooks are ok but for the price point, I don't think so. It is my only and last MacBook I will ever buy. Especially after I see the prices for the MacBook M3's. Those prices are insane.
What if you’re just a casual gamer, maybe you play one or two games, and you play them once in a while, when you have a little free time. Mac users are usually not big gamers, so having an option to play a couple of games that interest you without buying a whole new machine DOES make a lot of sense - Maybe you’re just thinking about it for your POV and no one else’s. If you’re into gaming then yes buy a Windows Gaming PC, but if your not and you like macOS then this is an option.
I can’t stand a laptop that isn’t portable and required plugging into a wall to make it through my day. Also, I only play a few games, Don’t really care about whatever games available on Steam. But just in case if I want to try some windows exclusive games this makes so much sense.
I didn't even see the menu for Rosetta but maybe that's due to updates to Whiskey not sure though. I am running a M3 Pro with 36gb of ram and currently on the Sequoia BETA 2 so we shall see how this all works but the instructions were super straightforward. So thank you. I am trying FFIIV Intergrade first lol.
2:34 for some reason it doesn't open the steam setup for me. There is a loading icon in whisky but then it just disappears and nothing happens. Anyone with the same issue?
Thanks this Video was very helpful but one Problem i came across is my Steam isn't going into full Screen even when i pick Big Picture Mode The games are in Window Mode even when i go into Settings in press Full Screen in game so i don't know how to fix this issue
So Whisky gave out on me and now it just doesn't work. I tried everything and it still doesn't work. I even deleted it and redownloaded to see if that would change anything. But now it won't create a bottle for me. What should I do?
Im experiencing issues where 32 bit games run with the sound being chopped up / staticy and the game running at about a third of its normal speed. Is there any way to fix this?
Good afternoon. I've followed the instructions in your related video but you don't finish downloading the game stopped the first time at 10% and the second time at 20%. I have one in my possession one MacBook Air M3 Thanks
So I had accidentally deleted whiskey and now when I downloaded it again and trying to open STEAM it shows can’t open file as wine64 is missing pls help
This method works for me, but created a problem when the games aren't playable anymore: lack of some sounds and uncontrollable mouse movements, even laptop restarts don't help out. What can I do, guys? Thank you in advance.
Hey thanks for the video. Im still stuck when i press "Open C: Drive. My mac do nothing and i can not move steam exe to that location. Before that step i cant not move more Any idea? thanks!!
Thanks for this. Not sure where I can report games that work but U-BOAT (2024 release, fantastic game) works very well. I have an M2 Max. Had to run it on Retina mode in the bottle config (I have a 5k screen). I found I could run it at 4K UHD with medium - high settings and only has occasional graphical glitches. If anyone sees this please add U-BOAT to the working lists. Thanks again!
Hi it works but every game I've tried to play runs very very slow :( also oblivion crashes whenever i get to the character creation but none of the others are crashing at least
Hi, I have a question. The setup process worked, but one of my games that’s 50 gb won’t install because steam says there’s only 16gb of space left. My computer says I have 800 gb left What can I do to install it?
I’m on the last Intel Mac Mini with a decent eGPU so most games work nicely if they support Mac - but had to run Boot Camp Windows (with some tinkering to get the eGPU working) just to play Cities Skylines 2. Parallels was too slow. When I get around to upgrading to Apple Silicon it’s nice to know that there are options.
Don't be fooled. It only emulates windows games and doesn't run them natively. I Cann't even run Palworld on my M2 MacBook Air because of the double layer of translations going on. It will run games Ok if you get a MacBook Pro model but then again you are paying 2000€+ for Laptop that is basically a nice RU-vid machine...
this is the best video found so far unto date!! trying because I don't want to download eta on my college laptop just my Mac ty ig ill see if this works these instructions I could actually follow
Thanks for this. Does Whisky use Apple's new Game Porting Toolkit 2? Have you tried running the automated installer found on that initial wiki page at 0:24?
Great video. But how can I create a new installation directory if I don't have enough internal storage and I need an external HD? I tried by myself but I can't find the way...
when i install gta5 and try to run in it says the game runs but it doesnt run anywhere is there a fix or problem with the version (i am on the newest) ?
I have a mac OS ventura 13.0 and whenver I try to open the app it says it does not work with my version. Any idea on how to fix this or is the another app that works with this version
Hi! I got steam running, but theres just one problem. It says that its not connected to the internet, even though I am. Is this an error or did I miss a step?
Great video! Quick question: does this work with online games or multiplayer co op games? I'd love to be able to play together with my friends who have windows pc's
Do I need to have DirectX 11/12 and/or GDTK downloaded or running in any way for this to work? Im new to using steam on a MacBook and my games won't run. Ive made sure all are compatible and none are older than 3 years, but every time I launch them the loading screen will start up and then instantly close and the green play button appears again. Ive tried all the troubleshooting options within stream like clearing the cache and verifying the files on each specific game but no luck. Im a bit confused by the start of this video mentioning other software like DirectX, but you never downloaded it. This makes me think Im missing a piece of the puzzle but I dont know.
I had the same concern, but even without installing DirectX on my wine it still ran DA: Origins fine. So, I'd say that no, you don't need to worry about it... I think. Update: same compatibility issue as crossover, sounds play twice and some stutters.
Just got a 16" silicon MBP and got the beta 15.1 developer edition.... Nothing works lol. Gonna have to downgrade to Sonoma from Sequoia to get GPTK to work...
I've been really into Sam and Max lately and with the remaster of The Devil's Playhouse coming up, I've been really wanting to play the telltale games but they're only for Windows on Steam. Here's to hoping they work with Whisky!! If I do end up buying them and playing them on Whisky, I will try my best to remember to update this comment to add if they work or not. Thanks for the guide !
This is amazing. Although I am trying to play AOE II and it doesnt work great and I want to have my disk space back, where is the game stored so I can uninstall it?
