This tutorial showcases how to play Windows games on Mac for free using the Whisky app. With the latest MacOS update and the power of Apple's gamer porting toolkit, It takes just a few steps to install Windows Steam games on MacBook and start gaming on Mac. Unfortunately, not all Windows games that are on Steam are available to play on Mac so you can play Windows games that are not available on MacOS through an app called Whisky. This method of playing Windows games on Mac will work with any kind of device with MacOS that has an M series chip, whether it's the MacBook Pro M2, MacBook Air M3, or Mac Mini.

Not playing Windows games on Mac, but Steam play unsupported games like Minecraft on Mac, But Paralells and Crossover, or any other windows game playing on Mac fast like that. This is a tutorial / Windows on Mac with Whiskey of run on Mac and FPS to launch games on Mac in 2024.

It’s worth mentioning that this only works for apple silicon Macs. If you’re looking to do something similar on Intel Macs, I would recommend setting up boot camp.

So for those who don't know, Whisky is a GUI version for apple's Game Porting Toolkit + Crossover's Wine flavour. More experienced mac users can use the terminal method (Apple's official solution), but it has no advantages and Whisky is better overall. Its basically Proton with DX12.

WARNING TO EVERYONE TRYING TO USE THIS: This option is solid for playing some games and even profesional software that is not on mac although if trying to play a game that contains anticheat it will not run it. Reason being is the anti cheat checks the processes being run on the computer. Whiskey only uses wine which does not spoof processes it only spoofs the file location. I have struggled with things like this on linux and my sisters mac before so i just thought everyone should get a fair chance to know.

Hey Bog, just wanted to correct you here: Whisky and Apple's GPTK are just flavours of Crossover's Wine with extra DX12 support, so they run identically to Crossover except in DX12 games, where they run even faster. As for Parralels, it doesn't run windows GAMES, it runs windows itself, so it is MUCH slower.

"Crossover's WINE" In case anyone is wondering why it's called Whiskey, it's a play off of the translation layer WINE. WINE is a piece of software that, rather than emulating a machine, it translates all (or as many as it can) Windows API calls into (typically) POSIX calls. This means that the application is actually RUNNING on your hardware, rather than on a virtual machine. (If you're wondering why it's called WINE, that stems from: Wine Is Not an Emulator Kinda a cop-out. It originally, originally stood for WINdows Emulator. When the software became popular, the acronym was changed to Wine Is Not an Emulator."

The best part about Whiskey is that it's a community-driven active open source project, not a potentially for-profit or for-spyware venture. As is Wine, on all platforms. The not-open-source parts are Apple's Rosetta emulation which runs x86 assembly on Apple Silicon, and D3DMetal, Apple's DirectX to Metal adaptor library.

i delete it because it kept opening up steam and then when i downloaded it the next day it said i didnt have wine 64. I thought i might have forgot to delete the whole thing so i deleted everything and downloaded everything again and now it wont make a bottle. i can make it and then it disappears the instant i click create.

Holy Crap! This Whisky App actually seems to work! I don't know how or why, but it does! Also, this feels too good to be true and I am worried Apple will "fix" this in future editions of MacOSX. Apple doesn't "fix" this, because this isn't some sort of exploit. This app is kind of like an emulator, but instead of running the entirety of Windows on your Mac, which could cause major slowdowns, translates the game to something a Mac can run. At least I think that's how it works. Also it's officially called a translation layer.

Apple is actually working to fix this, but not in the way you think. Go watch one of the Apple keynotes (e.g. where they announced iOS 18 back in June). They actually talk about this (it's called GPTK on their end, stands for Game Porting Tool Kit) and how they've worked to improve it over the year before. However, GPTK is really intended for developers to use to get their games up and running on Apple Silicon with minimal work. It really isn't meant to be used by end users, though it can be. The Whisky application just makes it easier for the end user. And, not for nothing, but I don't think you're actually using OS X on an M1 Mac. The last version of OS X (El Capitan) came out 2 years before the M1 chips. It's been macOS since version 11.

VM ware Fusion is free now. Runs Windows 11 fine on a Apple Silicon Mac. You need a Windows license, though - unlike Crossover, where it's not needed.

I had the same issue so I changed the main ''C drive'' location from my main mac mini HD to an external non ssd HD. I uninstalled the first steam app, reinstalled a new installer.exe in the new location (external HD), reinstalled steam, logged in again, and it worked as intended :)

@@mayatrash i found out how. Essentially it’s a setting that hides all of your desktop icons until you click on the desktop wallpaper itself, revealing the icons until you unclick the desktop. Settings > Desktop & Dock > unselect ‘On Desktop’ under the Desktop & Stage Manager heading

for the dependencies setup mine doesn't say "GPTK not installed" it says "WhiskeyWine not installed" and then i press next and nothing downloads. The app freezes and i can't close i unless i force quit.

Can it run forza horizon 5 ? I had assumed that on crossover version 23 something it was working, but since I joined the party late, I'm on latest crossover 24 version and I can't launch forza. The game also appears on crossover's page so I'm confused if it's supposed to run and I'm the one with the problem or it's not running at all

i have a mac os 10.15.7 but it says "You have macOS 10.15.7. The application requires macOS 14.0 or later." when i try to open whisky. why is this happening?

went through your setup step by step still cant get anything to work on my Mac :-( now that I have all this on my Mac do I just dump the applications?

Yes. A gosh darn easy interface around it since steam doesn't officially support nonnative games on macos.

@@Lord_LindaThePhilosopherany proofs lol? It's basically Wine port. Wine (and Proton) optimized for linux, not for MacOS. And there's a lot of GUI versions of Wine. You don't need to type commands in the terminal.
