the correct definition of that play was malicious contact. that being said the catcher needs to be coached up and should never be standing on the base.

Do you really think the issue here is the coach? First, good call direct avoidable contact by a runner. But for Ump to say a coach has a stupid question? Then ump hunts coach down to smart off again, then tells the coach to stay off the field and he is not allowed to ask any questions. Coach, yes not dressed to be a true coach, actually handled things right. Take call, then between innings asks his question. This ump is a punk.

Malicious contact overrules obstruction. Had she slid, she could make the case that she thought the play was coming home. In this case, atleast in USA (ASA) and USSSA, that contact would be at minimum, an out. I personally would give the ejection every time. Blindsiding a 12 year old (or so) catcher who isn't part of the play and putting her on the ground is dirty.

Let's be clear... If the catcher without the ball was laying in a beach chair, in the middle of the base line between 3rd & Home, drinking an iced tea, while flipping off the approaching runner, that runner is still required to avoid contact. This would make the runner slow down, adjust course, while possibly making her run outside of the baseline. This is where the rules of the game show up to protect the runner. If the fielder doesn't have the ball, he/she is to be charged with obstruction and the runner scores.
@Cigarsnguitars
@Cigarsnguitars 3 года назад
Peter Miller With the more recent advent of rules updates the catcher doesn’t have a right to block the plate without the ball. I’m assuming softball has adopted the same rule. A play up the 3rd base line they kind of have to look out for each other. The base runner is the one who establishes what the "line" between the bases will be, within reason. You can’t run 4 feet out one way or another but the ump will give you 2 for sure to get past a player from the other team.

As for the collision: the catcher was straddling home, motionless, as the runner took 8-9 strides before getting to the plate. That's a lot of time for the runner to decide what to do. If the catcher does not move, the runner has 3 legal options: legally slide, pull up, or go around. She's got lots of time and space to do any of these. No, it would have been obstruction if the play was still going on, but since it was the third out at first base, the obstruction would have been waved off. The malicious contact does not get waved off. It is enforced even after the side is out. And, furthermore, it is enforced over obstruction anyway.

@christophermusso
@christophermusso 3 года назад
For those who claim malicious contact because the runner's arms are extended, please rewatch the video @ 0.25x from 0:30. The runner extends her arms PRIOR to contact and allows them to flex during contact which reduces some of the impact (similar to crumple zones in vehicles). The contact is also thereby spread along the entire height of both players, further reducing force concentrations making for a safer situation. IF she slides instead, as some are calling for, then you would run a high risk of having the impact occur between one foot of the runner against one foot of the catcher. This would possibly lead to one or both of them sustaining serious foot/ankle injury. I also think that both the runner & catcher are at fault on this play. It could have been handled as a teaching moment w/o an ejection if the umpire would have called the two head coaches over & had them remind their respective players the proper actions to take in that situation.

This would be the ruling even if the runner pushes the catcher out of the base path, as specified in the NFHS softball casebook. If the runner’s push was malicious, however, she would be ejected and the run would not count. NFHS specifies that malicious contact supersedes obstruction, as does USSSA; USA Softball specifies that “if the runner committed an act of interference (i.e., pushing the catcher) after the obstruction. This also would overrule the obstruction.” www.referee.com/collision-decision/

Rules in nearly every children's' league mandate the runner slide or avoid a defensive player, and failure to do so is an automatic ejection in a lot of places. This is not MLB. Good call, blue.
@paulalstrom4144
@paulalstrom4144 3 года назад
@@mac2894 so I want to first say that I like your comment, but.....I think this particular incident didnt really justify an ejection of the player. There are a few things to consider before ejecting. First, was the collision "malicious" in nature?Second, it was away from the play. It was the third out. No run is scored. By rule the runner is not required to "SLIDE", but is required to avoid contact. On this play though I would not have ejected the player. I am not judging any malicious intent there. "Malicious" is the key word there. If she's throwing elbows then yeah, maybe I have an ejection. Otherwise I'm going to warn and maybe try to educate coaches, especially if this happens in a rec league or lower level comp ball. Sometimes runners just dont know how to run bases or what to do. And defenders often get caught ball watching. I'm not runnin' a 12 yr old for something like that.

interesting situation as to deciding penalties on this situation.....it was a 3rd out putout at 1st....so run can not score any which way you look at it. it was obstruction on the catcher[if before the 3rd out was made]. denying runner access to the plate....since play has ceased due to the 3rd out, do we then recognize the contact on the catcher by the runner attempting to score? i don't think i could call it malicious contact, and ejection because it was after the 3rd out was made and no obstruction occurred. personally, since it was a grade/middle school game, i, as an umpire would have ruled incidental contact, brought both teams coaches and runner and catcher to a meeting. and explained the rule for future reference by all involved so as to play the game correctly on down the road. then give a warning to the teams about any future conflicts. and finish the game
@milwaukeejt
@milwaukeejt 3 года назад
When a runner comes in standing up, and shoves/knocks a catcher to the ground, that is malicious contact. It is even more egregious since there was no play being made at the plate. Ejection is what the rule calls for, and for a good reason: the governing bodies are emphatically saying "Don't... do... that! We don't want players being unnecessarily injured."

Not sure how you are supposed to avoid contact with the catcher right there. Cant pull up because a throw could come back to the plate (runner doesnt know where the ball is here she just has her head down and is running). Cant easily run around because the catcher is too close to the plate and you would have to stop and come back which again, could take time and a throw could be coming. If she tried sliding in this situation it would be 10x worse and could seriously hurt the catcher. She didnt lower her shoulder. She didnt extend her arms very much other than put them up to protect her chest and face. I have nothing here.

Wow, I'm guessing from your ridiculously stupid comment that you've never played, coached or umpired a baseball or softball game. The catcher must give the base runner a lane to the bag, if they block the bag without the ball, that's obstruction and they're awarded the base. Runners must avoid contact, in this case the runner intentionally ran into the catcher and the ejection is automatic. The only penalty for the catcher would be an obstruction call, which in this case didn't matter because the 3rd out was made at 1st. Please learn the rule before opening your mouth, proving that you have absolutely no clue what you're talking about.
