Pretty shure Risky's Revenge was at least slightly pixely throughout in its original form on the DSi.

For me, Pirate's Curse and Half Genie Hero are tied for being the best in the series.

I started with Pirates Curse and loved that game to bits, I soon went to play the older games and Half Genie Hero and absolutely adored them as well

Pirate's Curse is the best IMO. The Risky items all work so well together to create fluid movement mechanics while in 1/2 Genie Hero eventually the Harpy just negates most of the other flying ones and even lets you just skip parts of levels. I still love 1/2 Genie Hero and backed the hell out of it in Kickstarter, but just my opinion.

Pirate's Curse is one of my favorite games. IMO at least, Half Genie Hero did not surpass it, but it's still fun and cute. 10/10 and 8/10, maybe. Regarding the art inconsistency, it reminds me a bit of FF4 or 6, where the menu portraits and the map sprites are like entirely different conceptualizations of the character.

Nice, I'm playing this franchise at THIS EXACT moment, currently in Pirate's Curse. I'll keep this video for later, but my quick thoughts about the franchise so far: I really enjoyed the first game (it was quite ambitious and well made for a GBC game), Risky's Revenge was also enjoyable, albeit short and kinda disapointing at some points (only 2 main dungeons, while the battle tower is a cool idea, serving as a replacement for a dungeon instead of side content feels off, also the shoot'em up section near the end REALLY needed a boss for a hype factor, it's cool at first but just goes on too long and is kinda easy, despite the final boss itself being a decent challenge), I'm really loving Pirate's Curse, it might become my favorite so far... Even though it still uses a few similar sprites from Risky's Revenge, so it almost makes Risky's Revenge look like an unfinished beta looking at it retroactively, Pirate's Curse is what Risky's Revenge should've been in the first place. Also, I use every item except potions, it makes things more tense and entertaining, same reason I don't use E-Tanks when playing Mega Man.

I always wanted to try these so I grabbed what Shantae games I could on the Wii U eShop, thanks for being so informative!! :D even more excited to try them now ☺️

I really like pixel art, but I also like the visuals of Half-Genie Hero more because of the consistency. It shouldn't be really all too bothersome when games have an inconsistent style, but it can be really weird depending on just how much the visual styles clash. Though still is not *that* much of a big deal if the game is super enjoyable. lol

The DSi is where I was introduced with her. I was randomly just looking up titles when hers just stuck out at me. I immediately fell in love with the game after purchase and have been a fan for years. Half Genie Hero is a massive improvement and I hope there is plans for her long after the game. #ShantaeForSmash

1. Pirate's Curse: excellent Metroidvania on Par with SOTN and Super Metroid. No complaints, my second favourite game ever. 2. Half Genie Hero: More of a traditional platformer than a Metroidvania but none-the less a lot of fun. Reminds me of games like Klonoa and other 2.5D platformers 3. Shantae GBC: yes, VERY clunky. Beyond that its a huge game with amazing graphics and sound for the GBC. There is so much to do and see in the first one, like i said, Sequin Land is massive. 4. Risky's Revenge: having played both the standard version and directors cut I can say while not a bad game it feels unfinished and somewhat half-assed. Very small and over before it starts. Again, not bad because what it does have is good.

Great introduction ! Now that all the dlc for Shantae Half-Genie Hero are out, I recommend newcomers to get the "Ultimate edition", it is a much better deal.

I remember CGRundertow!!! So far I've played Risky's Revenge and Pirate's Curse, and Shante is already one of my fav series of all time!!!! Something about the well done humor, silly characters, and excellent gameplay makes it very enjoyable and charming!!!!

i got Half Gennie hero on impulse, i was looking for a 2d platformer and had my nephews to look after, they liked the look of it so i got it, i do not regret buying it and have gone back in the franchise :)

I have not played the first game but I own two, three and four and have beaten two, three and four. I enjoy all of the games.. Hearing you discuss Risky's revenge and seeing Risky's Revenge again reminded me how much I enjoy that game and Pirate's curse was also really good. of the three that I played I would have to say the newest one is my least favorite but I think I would only say that because two and three were so good and maybe because only so much has changed as the series continues..

I just got pirate's curse. I have never played a shantae game and from what I gathered pirate's curse was the most favorable. It was that or 1/2 genie hero. Most people say 1/2 genie feels short or cutoff. The graphics in the other games dont really bother me. The reason I went with pirate's curse was because I did not have to pay for dlc. So far I'm having fun with the game no real issues. I haven't played 1/2 hero so I domt have an opinion on it. Though I wish I found this review of all the games before though lol.

I loved pirates curse it’s a great game it’s got some good variety between worlds and it feels like a medtroidvania game with Zelda elements. 1/2 genie hero isn’t as good but it’s still a fun game with some pretty good platforming, I’d play it over any new super Mario bros game. Never played the OG game or Risky’s revenge but I want to.

I was thinking the same on that still animations, looks amazing that they exagerated them. I dont like the still animations on the new fighting games that are designed on 2.5 D like BBCT and DBFZ when they even have more budget.

One crime about these mini-reviews is not bringing up Pirate Curse's actual 3D art that's arguably some of the best on 3DS period. Not only was the 2D gameplay have all it's background and forground layers given realtime depth using 3DS' 3D effect, but the 2D character art was also given 3D consideration, like example some of Shantae's hair, boobs, and clothing pops out from some of her other illustrated parts, as well as all the other characters. It's a part of the original game that no one ever talks about.

I love this series! I've played the last three games but couldn't get hold of the first. Half-Genie Hero is definitely my favorite, but the others are still fun... I prefer HGH for the following reasons: More game modes, each with their own storyline. It's got a funnier storyline. The controls feel a lot more natural. It seems to be a bit better for casual/young players who struggle with harder platforming. You can instantly travel back to town/home base, to heal and get to a save point- no more spending money to buy emergency flares, or having to manually run back to town! Going back to the older games after playing HGH feels like... Well, like going from a new Disgaea game to the first game? There are features that you take for granted until you play an earlier game and they're gone.

My reaction to the end of the game riskys revenge. Really surprised me when Shantae did not have her magic any and that she was now human.

I played Risky's Revenge and found it amazing. The artwork for cut scenes isn't as weird as you seem to think, if you have any familiarity with Japanese games. Lunar Silver Star Story Complete had the same thing going on, for example. Pirate's Curse was pretty amazing as well. I missed the magic, but I do love pirates. Half-Genie is of course incredible. #Shanta4Smash

I'd really recommend this series I'm a huge fan I have 100% all files in pirates curse and 100% shantae half genie hero all modes I also backed half genie hero and bought the day one release of shante half genie hero for switch wich means in total I have 4 versions of half genie hero 2 of pirates curse 1 of risky's revenge and 1 emulated verson of the og shante like I said it's really worth giving it a try

since you asked if the stories in Shantae are told in order? yeah they are.... you be a fool not to get all 5 titles of the games. from Shantae GBC to Shantae and the seven sirens. do get them all. because the story on all 5 are a story told in order. so yeah you want to learn about the Shantae series than get them all and play part: Part 1: Shantae Part 2: Risky's Revenge Part 3: And the Pirate's Curse Part 4: Half-Genie Hero Part 5: And the Seven Sirens.

Looking at the Half Genie Hero design with the 2D cartoon sprites, and 3D background, I'd totally be on board with it if this was the route Gamefreak took when remaking Pokèmon Black and White. Like I was a little disappointed when I saw how the Diamond and Pearl remakes were done, but if they took this route instead of making the Black and White remakes fully 3D, I think I'd still enjoy them, and be happy with it. It would really bring out the cartoony-ness of the little 16 bit Unova sprites.

I know this is an old video but have you ever checked out guacamele it's a little bit of platform or a little bit of metroidvania and a little bit of fighting all mixed in together really good game also the sequel is fun too

As a person who wants to play games physically instead of digitally, Half Genie Hero on the PS Vita I had to import from America was a must buy for me. Really loved it but I also would say that even if I have not played the Digital Only games such as Pirate's Curse, I have seen enough videos from lets players to know that Pirates Curse is a great game to try out in the Shantae series and if I had the ability to would also have played that myself, sadly I just don't like downloading games after my Wii Virtual Console experience turned me off from trying to download games digitally. It was not anything wrong with the system, it was just an empty feeling I get when you paid for a game but not having a box to show that you made the effort for it. Also if you are like me and only want to play games physically, well this is where lets play videos come in handy as you can watch someone else play before you make the buy of which one you really want and if Pirate's Curse is worth to make the jump into getting a game digitally. Also it comes down to which system do you own and what are your options. Those on Steam of course have the best options to get all the games from the Shantae series aside from the GameBoy Color version which of course, only can be played on a GameBoy Color unless if they get help from an emulator that Nintendo has not DMCA'ed yet.

I love all four. I have to put Pirate's Curse at #1 though. Even though there are no genie dances, pretty much everything about it is near perfection. The original has a great layout and structure, but it has some outdated mechanics that take time to get used to. Risky's Revenge refines the first game, but it just way too short. Half-Genie Hero's extra modes add for replay value, but reusing the same stages over and over again can get tedious, and I miss the "dungeons."

boy i don't give a F about how you or any other reviewer says about Shantae series to me, these are the only things that i love in the game: 1. Sexy Shantae, Risky Boots, Sky, Rottytops, Vera, Zapple, Plink Cristina Vee and ALL the Babes in Shantae Universe new and old. 2. The Stages in full detail and well design graphics, Sounds and Music, everything a 10 out of 10!! 3. The Characters which brings the game and the main focal point to life which is the BEST part of the Shantae Universe which brightens it very much, is what i'm here for. 4. Everything about the game is and will always be the best in series of gameplays. 5. Cristina Vee? yes even she does a 100% well performance and i like that a lot. furthermore, every actress does an amazing job at all the Voice Acting and much more that adds more flavor to the series. the adventures itself is the reason i find myself playing this game very often more times that i lost count. XD

I just started playing the games like a year or two ago. I came for the waifu and stayed for the gameplay and the humor...and the waifus. I love and hate all the games to an extent. GBC: The most infuriating of them all imo. A lot of leaps of faith in that game cause the 4:3 screen and giant character sprite. There are some basic enemies that take too long to kill or too hard to avoid with attacks that chase you across the map. This had mini games though if you even wanted to test your skill and grind out money. RR: A major improvement from the first and like you said easy to get lost. I don't have a big gripe with this one besides it being a short game. PC: Though I've only gone through the game once it's my favorite because how well all the items make your momentum so satisfying when using all of them in conjunction to fly through stages. HGH: The graphics is great, the main theme Christina Vee sings is great. Playing it the first time is great. But after that, going through the other arcade modes is very tiring because there are so many of them and you are going through the same stages but with a different skill set. The arcade modes saving grace imo is the dialogue after you beat a stage. Shantae and Rotty Tops best girls

In the first game you should absolutely hold B to run like always lol. It would be frustrating otherwise. Never let that B button go. Thankfully in later titles they made running an automatic thing.

Half genie hero is the best Shantae game

As admittedly slower paced and brutally hard the first Shantae game is, I love it so much. I love the world of Sequin Land that was established, going to different towns, talking to the people, going to the dance parlor and failing rank A, the nuisances of the different people in the shops/bathhouse, the day/night cycle, the enemies, the fact that it was kind of a 2D semi-open world with so much going on in all the locations, and of course the dance system. Even if Shantae isn’t big on storytelling especially with HGH, I felt like the first three games had such a consistent sense of whimsy and magic that cemented itself into what I think the theme of the games are all about. HGH was in no means a bad game, but even with all the DLC topping of the completion of the game, and as I enjoyed seeing all the different strings of dialogue/interactions for them, I just felt like it wasn’t my favorite installment. I did like the Villain-of-the-week structure going on, but something about the locations being 3-sectioned stages rather than just being one big connected world didn’t feel right. Even if I did laugh at some of the jokes, in my opinion it felt like the characters were too much like themselves, if that makes any sense. Mainly Shantae, except she feels more girly and exuded less of her, for lack of a better word, masculine edge that I felt she had in the earlier installments. She was more sassy (not entirely but just a dash), she was bold, she got angry if Bolo was being an idiot telling Risky the whereabouts of the dribble stone, she got annoyed if she was told to do a coffee side-quest by Rotty’s brothers, she’d be confident in her abilities if the tides turned, she’d be nervous trying to tell Mayor Scuttlebutt about not being a full genie, she was terrified yet determined to win over the possibility of her brain becoming zombie food in a race against Rottytops, and for a certain moment of weakness she had an eager interest in learning more about her genie heritage and meeting a genie in general. I could go on but this ramble is already getting long enough as it is. My point to all this is that aside from just enjoying the gameplay, it’s the overall feeling of the games that really enrapture me into its world of unique and unusual cast of characters and creatures. Also I even forgot to mention the music of this game, but I know every can agree on that with Virt running the turntables. Admittedly though, I felt like I expected too much from the creation of HGH, especially with the direction WF is heading with the series, but overall it’s not a bad game. I’m always going to be interested in what happens next in the adventures of our half-genie wonder and I wish Matt, Erin, and all the WF staff the best for not just making one great original IP, but other original IP’s as well. PS: Even thigh I didn’t mention this, the reason I like Risky’s Revenge (aside from the art style... Don’t look at me like that!) is just the fact that the story continued from the first game and world layout even if it wasn’t perfect or the fact that it’s super short is something I can agree wasn’t a good move, but I can understand that they had to make do with the memory of the DSi. Although it makes me think of the how different the series would be if Risky’s Revolution (the unreleased GBA) had found a publisher to be released.

P.S: you should checkout Rocket knights on PS Vita, which is the remastered version of the game of the same name from Sega Genesis. Plus, it is a Konami game!

You're suggesting which game to play first without having beaten them all first? Strange video decision, imho. But, it was entertaining regardless, so, I'll give it a like! :3 For me, Pirate's Curse is the way to begin the series. Like Half-Genie Hero, Pirate's Curse feels modernized, and thus, is easy to get into. And like you mention in the video, the events of Pirate's Curse lead directly into Half Genie Hero, so, it's a no-brainer to play that one first. Also, I must strongly disagree with your thoughts on art style consistentcy with the in-game graphics vs. dialog boxes. It's highly subjective; clear design choice from the devs. The dialog artworks do not have to be 16-bit just because the game itself is 16-bit. I personally enjoyed the artworks for they made the game feel more alive than what 16-bit sprites would have accomplished, IMHO.

Gameplay and story: Pirate's Curse. Variety, combat and looks: Half-Genie Hero. In other words for me a TIE :)

I think the first game is a good game, with some of the best grafics of the console, and a realy nice sountrack, but had two big problems. Well, each problem on its own isn't that bad, but together with the level design, they make the game harder that it should be. I will explain them later, because is half the estire coment. Risky's Revenge is short, and a bit unpolished, but looks really nice, and the big problems whith the first game are gone. The Pirate's Curse is amazing. while reuses many assets of the second one, its a really good sequel, and has the best level desing of the series. It also has the best plot of the series, and some of the best jokes and puns. I think it works best at least knowing the end of Risky's Revenge, but that game is short enought to be finished in 5 hours. 2.5 if you only do the story bits. I haven't played Half Genie Hero, neither watched any walktrought, so no coment on that one. And the big problems I find in the first game. The first one is the camera, witch, like in the mega drive sonic games, is too close to the MC. This makes actualy dificult to just navigate the world and fight enemies, with by itself is a mere anoyance, but can lead to some cheap deaths. Before I continue, I need to say that this problem was an unfortunate side efect of the size of the sprittes they were using. The second problem is how the life sistem works. Here, you have a healt bar that works like in Zelda games and the actual life system. The thing is, when you lose a life, you start at the entrance of the screen you where when you lost the life. As you may guess, when you lose all of your lifes, you get game over, and need to restart the save. This seems a tame problem, until you notice how big the overworld areas are, how easy is to die, and how far away are the safe points. In the overworld, at least. The dungeons have smaller screens, extra lifes, and a safepoint at the entrance; witch makes them easier than the overworld to traverse. The thing is, has the life sistem had been diferent (Only one life but more hits per heart, for example), the overworld wouldn't have been that dificult to traverse. Do note that that also aplies to the camera thing, but, as I said, they couldn't avoid that bullet.

My overall thoughts on the tetralogy: 1. Shantae. Too small screen and too few buttons for this kind of game. The graphics may have been impressive for a GBC, but I wouldn't recommend it for today. 2. Risky's Revenge. Playing it on PC wasn't a nice experience, it's very easy to get lost, it requires too many button presses just to see the map(and it's necessary to look at it very frequently) and also, the jump button should always be the cancel button on the UI, that was terribly confusing for me. Probably is a good game on the DS, but on PC the port has too many inconveniences. 3. Pirate's Curse. The first Shantae game that I was able to enjoy, and I enjoyed it so much that now it's one of my favorite games of all time. Btw, I don't care about showing the HD drawing of the character while taking as long as the rest of the game has a consistent art style(and it does). 4. Half Genie Hero. Liked, but not loved it. It was a bit frustrating until I started to buy upgrades in the store (I forgot to do it and I was making the game very hard). I cannot pinpoint a unique reason why I prefer Pirate's Curse, I feel that I liked Pirate's Curse more in every single aspect (more open level design, I prefered that art style, I prefered the Risky's equipment over Shantae's transformations, I liked more the music on Pirate's Curse, and even when no game on the series has remarkable plot, I prefered the one of Pirate's Curse).

Ok. Let's replace genie w Vampire. Let's replace ponytail w Vampire Killer Whip. Let's take gothic n turn it into Aladdin.

Let me say this right now, Pirate's Curse is the best game in the series. Yes, you can play as multiple characters in Half-Genie Hero, yes, the pixel art and anime character portraits clash, and yes, the game strays away from the usual Shantae formula. But it's the only game in the series that felt like the developers knew what they were doing 100% of the time. The story is great, the characters are fun, the music is orgasmic, and the pirate gear you get completely craps on the animal transformations, not only in terms of effectiveness, but also in terms of pacing and feel. Risky mode in Half-Genie Hero tried to replicate this, but ultimately failed due to the lack of new levels, the need to upgrade your gear, and the lack of real exploration. (Not to mention, if you only want this expansion, you have to pay as much for this as you do the Ultimate Edition, so it's pointless.) Bottom line: Pirate's Curse > Half-Genie Hero.

I find that the passage from 2D to 3D for the backgrounds is always a visual downgrade. Blocky, flat, clean surfaces cannot compete with drawn 2D . The same applies to Bloodstained VS SotN . 3d feels like cheap reality, while 2D feels like... drawings, illustrations

Sorry if this hurts someone feeling but...Shantae as series isn't that good. In fact, I always thought it is a mediocre series since half of the games are meh/okay-ish and it was popular just because Shantae herself (you know what I mean) and the game development history I legit think Pirate's Curse is the best game in the series (yes, even better than Half Genie) and it is really good overall but sadly, I can't say the same about Shantae and Risky's Revenge

Controversial opinion: Half Hero Genie is dreadfully over rated. It's a decent game at best to me. I wonder why others rank it as high as they do. About half the stages in HHG are incredibly basic - simply move left to right with little level variation. The side quest characters are god awful. I'm willing to bet they're characters designed by backers. Their dialogue and jokes are also bland and unfunny. The dialogue not involving those characters is serviceable. What HHG provides is loads of content. That's great, but the base game is mediocre.

Meanwhile we real gamers will be playing red dead redemption 2 unlike you Nintendo fanboys

I do love the series, the FIRST game will always be dear and near to my heart and it is getting a Switch Release lol.
