Actually speaking of turning the snare off, that's what I do when I play Latin Songs. I like to do it so that it emulates both a clave and a timbale. And not only that but it makes the bass drum sound like a bomba.

What a great resource on a specific subject that I was looking for... I'm a huge Elvin fan met him once and have him a hug lol.... I really don't like the cheesey bossa type limp rhythms you get on some jazz tunes.... I was looking for a more authentic way of incorporating Latin into the post bop jazz band I play in. This is perfect 👌 thank you so much for your knowledge and insight.

Thank you for this, Rick! I have a project which includes Chick Corea tune "Spain". I have a rock/fusion -based background so I kind of have a weaker spot in this kind latin jazz approach. I think the fast pattern with baiao bass drum would be the one to practise for that tune. It will be fun! Although that groove requires fast jazz ride technique but it is a bonus. Thanks again!

Hi Rick, I REALLY enjoy your videos. I'm getting back into drumming after a 33-year absence, and I'm watching a lot of drum videos to catch up on the wonderful world of drumming (I'm an old-fashioned rudimental swing drummer). However, Latin drumming has always been a weak point for me, so I really learned a lot from this video. Thank you so much. I have just one question. Could you re-record this with your voice volume turned up? Even with headphones I have a hard time hearing your voice. I have to have the volume way up to hear you, then I have to be fast and turn it down when you start drumming. Other than that, this is GREAT. Again, Thank You.
