Spot on commentary...No matter what format you use....It is always about the music...I prefer vinyl, I have been spinning since 84'...However, I also embrace technology...Dj Jazzy Jeff is my favorite and he always embraced technology. I use my laptop, phase, Serato, Rane One, CDJs and vinyl...When possible, I combine them... I prefer to curate the experience and take the audience on a journey...When I get hired people know what they are getting...I made a career of playing B-Sides and obscure music...With that said I LOVE all music including popular...I appreciate DJs that are party rockers, and I appreciate DJs like myself who like to curate an experience...Again...It's Always About The Music...
I started DJing in 2009, Serato Itch / Vestax VCI-300 era. So my root exposure to this craft has been with a laptop and DJ controller. Only recently did I really start investing in vinyl and leaning more towards vinyl DJ sets. Whether it’s a 60-minute set or 4-hour night, spinning all vinyl always brings more joy to ME during and after a set, than spinning in any other format. I would say CDJ/USB format brings a similar feeling, but it really doesn’t match the magic behind blending two songs together on vinyl.
In today's society, Idiocracy thrives as we reduce complex ideas to soundbites on social media for mass consumption. We've forgotten that opinions are diverse, not dangerous, yet, we're quick to tear down instead of understanding. Let's reclaim the depth of discourse and honor the right for every voice to be heard. Moral of the story: Play your preferred DJ formats, Keep it moving and it's okay to not agree with someone without having to slander them in the process.
I play commercial sets in town 6 hours etc on the laptop. I occasionally play all vinyl sets at raves or partys and really enjoy only having a crate or two to choose from because always having every tune is nice but the limitations of a small selection is great for me I have some newer tunes but alot of my new tunes I buy are old anyway cause a jam is a jam ❤
This needs to be advice for all DJs, without our own musical personality we're just going to circle the same shit decade after decade. I wanna hear the person, I wanna hear a story, I wanna hear perspective, otherwise it IS mindless/soulless DJing music catering to a pre-determined understanding of "what a DJ should do."
Here’s the problem we got so comfortable with technology and making things easier that we don’t due diligence of pure vinyl DJ and some people can’t do a real creative mind state and vinyl DJ. I believe it takes two to tango with you must have a strong, creative mind and knowing the records and using the skill behind turntable
Pdot . Something you’ve touched on but maybe would be a great bigger talking point is DJ agility / versatility . The skill to DJ on common DJ platforms and how important it is one’s DJ journey. Controller / USBs / Vinyl only / Static Platters / Moving Platters / Stems / No Stems. There is so much man. It could be daunting to think about or Maybe not . Great video as always
