It's interesting to see that the developers took lots of care with the tyres: the surface turns green when on grass, and you can see the brake turn red when you brake.

It has Murray Walker *at least* . And yes, they couldn't include Villeneuve because he copyrighted his image and name.

For those wondering, Jacques Villeneuve wasn't used because he had already copyrighted the use of his likeness (the same thing happened for the previous game). However it's certainly awkward that the technically defending champion wasn't in the game.

F1 '97 was so so good. I remember being 14 years old and so excited for F1 '98. I got it on release day and I've yet to be more disappointed and gutted over practically anything, ever!

Jacques Villeneuve copyrighted his name and face for some reason so he isn't in this game (or F1 97) Also this game wasn't released in arcades to my knowledge

The day my dad bought my brother and I a PS1 my brother insisted on buying this game. I played it a bit and always thought it was crap. Was confirmed when I hired F1 97 from the local video store and saw it was a 1000x better. Honestly looks like 80% of their budget went into Murray's voice and a further 19.99% went into the opening video.

This is why I got F1 97 as my first PS1 game instead of 98 despite getting the console Xmas of 98 and watching Hakkinen win in Japan that year.

Hilariously, the not Villeneuve was used for cheat codes in the N64 F1 games. Which was hilariously awesome, really. I was hoping Arrava would play the N64 F1 games at some point, though...

@@mattiacisternino2402 JV controlled his own licensing while the rest had it controlled by FOM for video game licensing. IIRC JV had already signed a deal to license his likeness to another publisher at the time so that's why he wasn't featured in the game (nor in F1 97)

It's well known that Jacques Villeneuve had his name protected and needs another licence apart from the F1 licence to use his name. Grand Prix Manager 1 and 2 also were not licenced to use his name.

I think it was something to do with Villeneuve not being a member of the GPDA so games would have had to sign a separate licencing agreement with him to have him in the game.

He’s done it already… I’m not sure if it was Aarava but I think it was him… that game was awesome! I still had it until a few months ago, when I moved to a new house, and still played it regularly… hopefully I’ll find it again, but if I don’t, I’ll buy it online again! I love that game!

I remember going to my local game rental place and asking for a game by the code they used to catalogue them. I gave them our customer code by accident and they went to get the first Croc game, and I had to correct them. I wanted to rent this game instead.

After F1 and F1 97 I was so excited for this game. Turned out to be such a let down but I still have a soft spot for it as the 98 season is my favourite to date and it’s nice to have a go on every now and then just for the nostalgia as I was 14 when it came out.
