Absolutely shocking that they didn't include F1 Race Stars as the number one best game of all time XD

Grand Prix Legends is missing. It's a 90's game about the 1967 season, but still technically an F1 game.

Thank you for this video. Really great to see GP4 on the list of best games. I was one of the developers in a small team at Microprose who developed both GP3 and GP4. Myself and a colleague wrote the entire graphics engine for GP4 using C++ and directx. Geoff looked after the physics (using assembler) and we interfaced the graphics engine with the backend physics. We also developed an XBOX version of GP4 but was never released (it was close to completion). So pleased that people still like it and that it has great support in the mod community. Thank you

Geoff Crammond's Grand prix 2 & 4 are legendary!!!

I would include F1 2013 in the list of best F1 games. Not only did you have career mode and classic cars, but classic tracks. You could race the current (at the time) teams and drivers on classic tracks. I still fondly recall driving around Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit in a 2013 Mercedes

F-1 World Grand Prix for the N64 was a masterpiece. Way ahead of its time and pretty much my favorite Nintendo game to date

Oh yes Grand Prix 4. Arguably the best F1 game ever made and which still is fun to this day. For example there is a huge AI Racing Series called the GP4 Offline Championship where you can basically watch your AI perform and you dont even have to own the game itself :)

F1 Challenge 99-02 is the OG for me. Playing it online extensively in 2011-12 with people around the world and also the mod that comes with it. Still have the 2004,2005,2006,2007 and 2008 mod sitting inside my pendrive but for the lack of free time barred me from playing that.

F1 2001 by Studio Liverpool is one of the best simply because you could have a rave party to its opening and menu music

Grand Prix 1 on the Amiga was also a game changer. You're right about F1'97 and the damage factor. I was leading Montreal by a mile in the Arrows with Damon Hill and the exhaust clunked on the last chicane.

Grand Prix 2 was lightyears ahead of it's time and deserves to be on the list moreso than the also-great GP4

Championship season 2000 on ps1 was awesome. Even had different fuel and tire strategies you could run in the race like 1 or 2 stoppers. It was a nice little simcade

I Remember Playing F1 Championship Edition ,the first F1 game I played ,then Moved to F1 2010 ,2011 ,2012 ,2014 ,2015 and 2017,2018 editions !!! I still miss good old days of F1 Championship Edition

F1 career challenge with the RH2004 mod was a good part of my teen years. We'd have 4-5 people at the local computer shop race together in LAN. So much fun.

My first F1 game was Geoff Crammond's Grand Prix 2 for MS-DOS, simulating the 1994 season. Loved that game to bits.

I remember using mods for F1 Challenge 99-02, that was one amazing game. I also loved the first F1 game for the PS1, I remember driving the entire Monaco GP with full laps...just loved it. I miss the F1 GP series from the N64 with all the scenarios to play, that was so cool.

The F-1 World Grand Prix games on the N64 were really solid for the time, and were the first to introduce scenario modes based on the 1997 and ' 98 seasons. The late 90's and early 2000's were an awesome time for F1 games because multiple studios had the license to make official games, and you got so much variety. I'll happily take the odd bad game in exchange for risk and innovation, which it's taken far too long for Codemasters to do, due to the fact that they don't have much in the way of competition. F1 Arcade for the PS1 is probably the weirdest F1 game, if not the worst. Think F1 race stars by way of Sega Rally, with crazy power ups and a time limit you have to keep extending.

Favorite thing about F1 97 on the PS1 is definitely Murray's commentary.

Aryton Senna's Super Monaco GP 2 on Sega Genesis. It was super ahead of its time with rivals, teams, driver swaps, ect.

F-1 World Grand Prix on N64 deserves an honorable mention I think for being one of the better F1 games that have ever been made. Specifically for the graphics, pretty decent physics, and the Challenge Mode was enjoyable, if frustrating at times. And also noteworthy as one of the games where Jacques Villeneuve did not allow his name or likeness to be in the game.

There's two that I miss on the top 5 list: - Grand Prix Legends. For years it was simply the most advanced simulation out there. Besides the amazing physics model, its premise and track selection was unique. Racing on the original 14 km layout of Spa-Francorchamps is just something else, and until the modern era of mods and DLC you could do that exclusively in this game. The fact that it came out in the same year as the two most awful looking entries in the video is just astonishing. - Grand Prix 2. While GP4 is objectively the best edition of the Geoff Crammond series, I would rank GP2 higher in terms of being ahead of its time. It came out in 1995 and both its damage model and its driver AI put every Codemasters F1 game to shame. And although there is no career mode, the immersion aspect is pretty impressive for 1995 as well: You could do full race weekends with every single practice session including Sunday warm-up, you had full control over your pit stop strategy and could adapt it during the race to your actual fuel consumption and tyre wear, you could do all kinds of setup work and the car would react to it. And all driver and team names were customisable, which is a nice feature I missed in many of the later F1 games.

I know that you've mentioned Grand Prix 4, but anyway I miss Grand Prix 2 on your list. It was way ahead of its time, what graphics and realism is concerned and set the standard for many games to come. It had everything except for weather changes

My favourite retro F1 games: Ayrton Senna's Super Monaco GP 2 - Mega Drive / Genesis F-1 World Grand Prix II - N64

I remember buying F1 98 for the PlayStation, only to return it in a day in exchange for Gran Turismo. Never played another F1 game since. I was seriously disappointed after having played Grand Prix 2 for many years, which I absolutely loved.

F1 World Grand Prix and it's sequel in the Nintendo 64 were both excellent to play and their graphics were amazing for their day. There was another F1 game on the N64 however that was terrible - I think it was called Pole Position 64.

Not having GPL here is a shame.

You forgot the wheel issues for F1 2014, that limited your available steering lock at high speeds leading to ridiculously large turning circles, and running wide on corners, simply because you didn't have enough steering lock available.

F1GP for the Amiga in 1991 was one of the best of its time, customisable roster, decent controls, full length Grand prix and a spectator mode if you just wanted to play out scenarios.

F1 Race Stars deserved a shout. That game was just confusing on so many levels.

Nailed the best list. Had all these, and didn't have one of the ones on the worst list, thankfully. I can only imagine what a Geoff Crammond F1 game would look like today. Played GP1 when I was 6, and there started my 30+ year addiction with F1 games. F1 2020 is the best, though. It's everything I've ever wanted in an F1 game since GP1, but there are still things that you could do in GP1, that you still cannot do in any other non-Geoff Crammond F1 game since, like, take control of both drivers throughout the course of a race. This would work incredibly well on F1 2020 My Team, if it were a thing. Drive the first half of the race with one driver, then swap mid-race and take control of the second driver, and for more than one stint (if you want to). That used to be so much fun. Great video! :)

Could you guys possibly do a Management game equivalent of this video? Because what we’ve really been lacking in recent times is a properly in depth, immersive, captivating and well thought out management game with full licensing and support! 👍👍

F1 World Grand Prix for the N64 has to rank up there, especially for the realistic challenges from the 1997 season.

I would love to know how you captured the older PC games; I've tried multiple times to capture older (typically 2003 or so and older) games for streaming and I haven't been able to get the resolution to display correctly, the game will show up as a tiny postage stamp amidst a sea of black, quite frustrating. Cool video too!

There were also some games for the N64 with an official licence. F1 Pole Position (1996 season), F1 World Grand Prix (97) and Part 2 (98) and a few more. But they all haven't aged well either. But I played them all back then.

F1 97 - the Murray Walker commentary does it for me.

I am born in 2007, but F1 Champioship Edition is really impressive

It wasn't a licensed game but Grand Prix Circuit (1988) was for all practical purposes the first Formula One game. It featured three of the actual teams and eight of the then current tracks though none of the drivers. Created by DSI and slotting in between Test Drive 1 and Test Drive 2 developmentally, it was outstanding for the time with the biggest drawback being lousy A.I. (but hey, it was 1988 after all).

Still no love for F1 2013? Classic cars AND TRACKS with leader boards separated by era and with solid handling and graphics, Murray Walker, era appropriate pit crew, tyre branding and even filters to match the colour spectrum as it appeared on the TV tech of the time and the real photo loading screens was a nice touch

There were F1 games back into the 80s, you're missing quite a lot.

GP4 was my fav. You forgot to mention the trackside camera. I used to race in SPA and Monza only using that camera. It was amazing.

The games I’ve got the most enjoyment out of was F1 ‘95, ‘99 and ‘06. I begged and begged for Career Challenge but didn’t play it much when I did get it

I had the F1 2015 on PC. In my experience it was incredibly poorly optimised.

There's an overlooked gem at the PS2 called Grand Prix Challenge,developed by Melbourne House and published by Atari Inc. (Infogrames),based upon the 2002 season. I used to play a lot in my childhood. Oh boy it's a good game. Good graphics and good gameplay,and a top tier soundtrack. An amazing arcade styled F1 game that deserved more recognition.

You can do so much wit f1 chelenge you can do driver transfers you can even add kers. But bigest problem is mods are prety hard to make them work

Geoff Crammonds games were always my favourite. I started with GP1 in 1994 I think and then played them all with mods, with online leagues of early 2000s etc. Philosophy of those games is just different. Changes you make to the smallest car setting then actually can be felt in a car even if you play on a keyboard.

Official F1 Racing was the first F1 game I played on PC. I was 8 years old and I loved it. That was, of course, before I knew about Geoff Crammond's Grand Prix series... I couldn't tell a good F1 game from a bad one back then. By the way, props for al lthe detailed research into the various developing studios and everything! Very informative.

Can't fully remember the name, but I think it was grand prix manager 2? That game was insanely addictive.

Ubisoft’s F1 Racing Simulation was also very, very good!

I have a soft spot for F1 2009 (the Wii version) as it was the first F1 game I played, having been introduced to it by one of my school friends and then got it at home for Christmas if I remember right. With the wheel it's a lot of fun to play, even though as I gained more experience with it over the years the ai became too easy to beat even on hard difficulty! For instance, at Monaco the fastest lap they'd set would be in the 1:19 bracket, while I'd end up lapping it in the 1:13 range! That and also at Monaco the ai would keep damaging their cars, so during a 25% distance race where you'd normally do one or two stops they'd end up having 4 or 5 trips through the pits while I kept my nose clean and stuck to the strategy (I preferred to do two stops; less pressure on the tyres). So I'd sometimes end up lapping the entire field at least once! Hot lapping the circuits in Time Trial was fun and the scenarios were a nice diversion from the normal racing as well (and some of them were genuinely challenging e.g. two laps to defend a lead at Spa; the ai are on full wets or inters, but you're still on slicks). So all in all I'm probably biased, but I don't think F1 2009 is as bad as people make it out to be.

What a lot of people might not know about, is that F1 Challenge 99-02 has a lot of pretty awesome stuff hidden in the game files. For example, you can have formation and slow down laps, unlock the camera at pitstops, add more screens to the LCD on the wheel, add driver tags, even have that 2x15 minute period of going out to the grid, and probably many more. These were probably cut from the in-game menus because they didn't get finished in time, but the only issue I've seen is the AI unable to handle the swimming pool section on the formation lap, which can get very frustrating

Grand Prix Legends should be on this list. It's the granddaddy of "popular" racing sims!

My buddy got really into f1 recently and we got f1 2021, I have to say the 2 player career mode, while not being my team mode, has been loads of excitement and fun. I feel like that and dynamic/not knowing weather has been some of biggest features that have got me coming back. Plus the ai and handling is amazing on a wheel, reallyy excited to see what code masters has in store for 2022 game. Really hope we get 2 player my team mode so we have our own team :)

Nice to see classic 99-02 on list. Thing that can run on ancient machinery and still deliver that "my car setup is terrible, need to check telemetry for improvements" vibe that is as much important (for me) as actual driving on track. And with keyboard it kind of also has "DRS" - turning off steering assistance (love that it limits turning angle but not actively turns wheels, same time will let tires to full lock if overheating) on straights gives extra speed (1,5-2% extra).

Am subbed to your psl channel I would also add that 2014 was more disappointing than 2014. 2014 was a solid game, easy to mod and had a career mode. In 2015 they removed career and encrypted a lot of the files so it was very difficult to mod.

I knew full well that GP4 was going to be on this list of the best F1 games.

My all-time favorite F1 game is F1 Racing Simulation, released in 1997. The game had 1996 season and I remember it being literally the first games I've ever played as a kid. I was 3 years old back then. That started my interest in F1 and I've only missed 3 or 4 races after that.

Suprised F1 2009 isn't on the the worst list.

There was a little known N64 game which I think was called simply "F1 Racing Championship" back in 1999. Unlike it's prequel "Monaco somethingorother" it was fully licensed, and the handling model was similar to PS1's F1 '97, meaning you could bin it at any moment if you lost concentration. The World Grand Prix series was much more fondly remembered by N64 players (I loved those too!) but this game was far more realistic, and for a console playing kid in the 90s it felt like almost a sim of sorts! I still boot it up every now and then for a few laps! Anyone else remember that?

Best F1 sim: Crammond GP4 Worst F1 sim: Everything else. The level of fine tuning in every aspect of the car setup, plus the data logs, made GP4 not just a game but a real simulation.

F1 Challenge 99 - 02 was always my favorite. I never bought a Game from Codemasters after that, mostly because I stopped watching F1 after the first Brawn GP Season.
