That vga cable is probably made for CRT monitors, almost every CRT I know can run in interlacing mode, that's how pro CS players used to be able to get 120hz out of a standard 1280x1024 CRT.
Yeah, you're better off just sticking with what's out there. Not only are these cables getting rarer to find, but they just don't work with 15 khz signals.
Pretty sure with one of the early PS3 devkits (DECR1000a), you can actually output RGBHV at higher resolutions than 480p, the option is still left in the firmware but is locked on retail (CECH) and debug (DECH) models since it outputs through an actual D-Sub port that only the early devkits have.
@@Ex_Savior had a super long comment written out, but accidentally deleted it all, so i'll just send the sources for now: www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/images/5/56/DECR1000A_-_back.jpg www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/XRegistry.sys www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/Connectors#Supported_Resolutions i mightve gotten something wrong in my initial comment, i dont think it outputs RGBHV, just regular RGBS through d-sub
I think the reason no one has tried to replicate is because there are very limited uses for this cable. Perhaps it would be worth reverse engineering if people can figure a way to strip the need to use RGBHV or the need to output 480p only.
I got a Linux dev kit in 2007. Can I just confirm when you say PS2 Linux VGA cable you actually mean the Monitor Cable Adaptor, the one directly plugs into the PS2 ? And not the cable with the blue ends ? Which is presumably a VGA cable. My PS2 Linux dev kit has been broken up over the years, I. have only a few items remaining one of which is monitor cable adaptor but I also have the wire with the blue ends and I must admit I'd forgot what this was for until I saw your video. Very enlightening video, I didn't know you could do half that stuff !
Maybe a bit late, but couldn't you use the freemcboot tool... how it was called? there's one that allows to enforce certain outputs, to enforce 480p and use this instead of HDMI mods or adapters?
I have a similiar setup but two things are strange:.... 1. I cant get picture out of rgb for the ps3 using the ps2 vga cable. I have to force component via a vga to component dongle. 2. Would it be possible with freemcboot to force vga compatibility with menus & & games that dont support pro scan? Just like to know what you think looks cleaner? Component or vga/rgb?
1) For the PS3, make sure you set the display settings to output as "AV Multi / SCART", then choose the color space as "RGB", and finally make sure to select "480p". This is the only way to use the VGA cables for PS3, because using the "Component / D-Terminal" output settings will only allow a "Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr" color space, making the colors appear very green. 2) Yes, I've heard people have been able to use Free McBoot to force the PS2 main menu and other games to boot into 480p automatically. However, I'm not sure how to use this option since I never looked into Free McBoot. As far as VGA or Component and what looked cleaner or better, I believe they look very similar.
Could you use this with a 31khz+ vga monitor out of the ps3 at 480p? I'm thinking between that and using it with my vsc 500/extron rgb interface it might be worth getting when I get a ps3. I love the OEM vga cable for the 360 and if this produces similar results it might be worth it for some 2d ps3 games
If you plan on using a PS3 with these cables, you can, but remember that your monitor will have to accept a "Sync on Green" signal. The TV and monitor in my video are exceptions as they both accept this signal type. Also, keep in mind that your games will somehow have to boot in 480p whether it's a natural option in the game or by hard/soft mod methods.
@@Ex_SaviorYes indeed, I recently bought on Amazon a MULTI OUT/YPbPr cable for PS2/PS3 and a YUV to VGA cable with 3 RCA female coupler and it performed the same function...
...Because my Saba 19'' LCD TV has a PC-VGA input, but you have to select YPbPr in the source so "Sync on green" and my game started in 576p in PAL region, and I went up to 1080p full HD!
I thought 480p isn't possible in RGB, just Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr only. I have a PS3/Wii VGA cable that converts Y Pb Pr signals to a format usable in VGA with the lowest latency possible, but it will only work with PS2 slimline on 480p-supported titles.
Regarding the Playstation 2 menu option for Component video out (RGB or Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr), the Playstation 2 can output its progressive scan 480p signal via RGBS, RGsB, and RGBHV if you toggle that option.
what happens to the games that doesn't have progressive scan support? Will they work on VGA monitors that can't do interlacing? Cause my LCD has a VGA port. Might as well stick my Ps2 to it if all games work. Edit: Nevermind, watched the video again. Looks like it wont work.
I'm trying to cram everything I have into one monitor but my pc and PS4 are taking up both hdmi ports. I have a ps2 slim but do I just need one adapter? I don't want to use the ps2 like a pic I just wanna play my ps2 games
Even if your monitor can accept the VGA connection, please keep in mind of the two things: 1) You will need to play games play games at 480p or force the resolution to all menus and games via hard/soft mods. 2) The monitor must accept a "Sync on Green" signal. The majority of PC monitor might not accept this signal type.
These are two entirely different things. The VGA cables will only output a 480p 31 khz signal via RGBHV, while the pound cables are upscaling the video signal to 1080p. I think it's based on preference.
You know, this can actually work. GSM does have an option to output a VGA signal, however to get to the option where you can do this will only display in 480i. Perhaps setting a button to launch GSM when you boot up the PS2 will be your best option.
Yes, PAL supports progressive scan at 576p in our region in Europe with the MULTI OUT YPbPr cable, and I even went up to 1080p full HD on my PS3! @@arcadespirit75 was referring to the PS2 specifically, no game has support for progressive scan in PAL (576p), The few that support Progressive output at 480p.
CECHA01 is the best Playstation ever. You won't have to worry about component cables or upscaler machines. One console that plays 3 generations of Playstation with hardware compatibility for PS2.
