In Latin America it was almost impossible to find a non modded ps2 or an original game. I really think this was also part of why the ps2 is the best selling console of all time

Authorized retailers did sell original games an non-modded consoles, at least in Argentina (E.g. Compumundo, Garbarino, Fravega, Electronic Things).

It's really difficult to imagine Sony actually fighting piracy in those places it boomed. Here in Brazil, PS2 sold like water. People barely knew about the existence of Game Cube and Xbox. I never ever saw a PS2 not modded and I never saw a Ps2 game out of stores. And man... everyone had a Ps2... it's comical

Same in Russia. I bought my PS2 new in box, and it was already modded to load any pirated games. And games were for couple of bucks each. Most of them were translated with voiceover by pirate groups.

Well, we only officialy got the PS2 in Brazil in 2009. That's 9 years after its original release and 3 years after the PS3 hit the market. Before that, all the PS2 consoles were, let's say, """""imported""""" from certain Spanish-speaking country bordering us. No wonder they already came modded to run pirated games by default.

Piracy groups were creative during the early PS2 days. I remember DVD games that had content ripped out or downsampled to fit on a CD and even single DVD games coming on multiple CDs. Those were the days

It´s weird to say, but I actually came here for nostalgic reasons, and I am pretty underwealmed the didn´t touched uppon the fact that here in south america, ps2 piracy was HUGE. Like everyone had a ps2 but I can´t name even a single person who didn´t had it pirated, in shops at that time every game was pirate, and they costed around 3 dollars each

Back in the days we didn't know what piracy was, and were playing pirated games thinking that's the only way to play it, and once we realized there were original games, they were extremely difficult to find let alone very expensive to buy

The piracy rates wouldn't have converted directly to legitimate sales though - especially in less affluent countries, harder copy protection would have just meant less people would even be aware of Playstation, which would have led to less legitimate sales of future products when those countries' economies are more stable. boring point but worth noting

PS2 piracy was so rampant in my country that even official PC and console stores would sell pirated consoles and games. The only place you could even see an original game was in the few Gamestop kiosks that shopping malls have here. Those games were priced at double or even triple the price of a what a normal game would cost in the US, so it's no wonder piracy was the choice for most. It wasn't until digital games showed up and games started being sold at a reasonable price that piracy took a hit. And let me tell you, sellers of pirated stuff were no slouchs. They'd sell games with HD labels printed on the disc, custom box labels and even custom menus and subtitles to have the games in Spanish when the original didn't have the option, not to mention insane modded versions of games to add stuff that original console titles would never have.

RPCS3 is making great strides recently. But it's still far from perfect. But since Sony basically doesn't care about ps3 or ps2 anymore, emulation is keeping these, things alive, Epcsxe for ps1, Pcsx2 for ps2, RPCS3 for ps3 and let's not forget PPSSPP. Even PSVita has one but its not the best it's called the Vita3k but I've never used it.

From my experience duckstation is the best for PS1 emulation, and if you tweek the right settings you can get them running at 1080p or even 4k, and let me tell you they look amazing like this.

Damn homebrewing/piracy used to take way more effort. All I needed to hack my 3DS was a micro SD card and my laptop and boom, I can play Mother three on my 3DS. It's pretty crazy how people are still finding new ways to crack into this thing considering that any games you could play on this would be better played on an emulator. It's pretty cool that this niche part of the fan base has a dedicated following this many years later.

Even in the eastern Europe where 1 PS2 game was 1/3rd of monthly wage, it was around 50/50. I don't think it's getting anywhere near that numbers, unless you are making 210 pounds a month, or you expect the games to cost like 400 pounds in the future.

PlayStation 2 is still my most favorite console of all time. I still enjoy it to this day. And the original console my parents gave me for my birthday in 2002 still works. While they are no longer alive, the PS2 is. And whenever I see it, I think of 13 year-old me playing it after school. Or secretly while my mother fell asleep in her chair, hoping she wouldn't wake up. 😅

About that inferior rgb scart cable, as you mentioned wasn't a true rgb scart cable, as it was wired to use the regular composite signal within the scart connector. The green screen issue could (and still can) be disabled through modding. Sony sold a breakout box that outputted audio, composite video and s-video which was a cleaner signal, hence the suggestion as this being the next best thing to watch DVD movies.

Until I started going online I had no idea people paid so much money for games. I'm from Croatia and I got my PS2 modded at a store that also sold burnt copies of games with PS1 titles costing ~$3 and PS2 titles costing ~$5. I distinctly remember them offering me 2 pirated games for free after getting the console chipped. They also had tiny CRTs set up with PS2s you could play for like $2 per hour. Crazy times!

I remember the modchips for ps2. They were extremely hard to install and had lots of little points to solder in place. If you got any of this wrong it would damage the laser and other components. I ended up having to replace the eject and power buttons every few months and the laser would go out constantly. I sold it to someone who knew what they were doing and went back to the fat ps2 with OPL and Free MCBOOT. This was a vast improvement over modchips. Modchips sucked.

I still have my original ps2. Me and my dad cut a screen into it (like a modern day pc) and we installed a mini black light into it so you could see all the hardware and it would light up. I still can't believe we were able to do that and not fry the console while we soldered the black light to its mobo lol

another major development happened in the PS2 modding scene earlier this year when Dragon-based Mechacon chips (SCPH-5000× and up) were finally exploited with MechaPwn, allowing region-free game booting and burned game backups to run without any modchips. PS1 backups can load right from boot while PS2 backups need to be patched as a Master Disc and loaded using either uLaunchELF or the Launch Disc option in the Free McBoot menu. its a really good option for people with slim PS2s who dont have a reliable way of using OPL for backups and dont have good enough PCs for emulation (like me) eventually i will switch to a fat PS2 and use hard drive loading for my backups but for now on my slim PS2 MechaPwn is saving my ass lmao

Back in the days it's easier to get pirated games compared to original ones. I guess ease of access these days makes piracy less appealing...but it still lives on though. Say what you like about digital games, at least it could combat the astronomical physical item scalping problems these days

Thanks to the Matrix Chip, the PS2 was a huge sucess in Brazil. If you count the pirated versions of games such as GTA VC and SA, Gran Turismo series, GoW series and Guitar Hero series, the total sales numbers are most likely to grow at least a few millions units more. Each.

Growing up in Brazil in the early to mid 2000's, *everyone* had a PS2 that was bootlegged, and only owned bootleg games. I don't think I saw a single official game that wasn't mine that was sent over from America. Go to the store and buy 5 PS2 games in thin cases for 5 reais($2.50 USD) at the time.

Actually, a friend did research and it can run any game A friend had a bulky one and it ran all games just as well as my slim PS2 only difference is that the bulkier one had an even worse lens that broke often AND earlier models had a Hard Drive port, which was dropped for piracy concerns in later models You could indeed install games in said hard drive with some tinkering, sadly some games relied in that hard drive (including FF XII i think)

I love this channel but my only problem is lack of pause between chapters. Listen at 11:36 when the subject changes from FreeDvd to Cturt, it sounds as if it's a single sentence, just a comma inbetween. My friendly recommendation is to at least be silent for 1 second at that time. It's hard to focus or know when the subject changes otherwise. Thanks.

Jokes aside, piracy was such a common thing during the PS2 era that finding a non-jailbroken PS2 in South America is a whole ordeal, to the point is sometimes more expensive to find a non-jailbroken console, even retailers sold you jailbroken consoles lol

The PS2s DVD playback is YPbPr. Which uses the same output pins as RGB. This is why the image appears green. It has nothing to do with the cable being used. If you have a monitor capable of switching between RGB and component video on the same inputs, switching it to component will turn the green image into a perfectly clear one.

2:14 Numbers like this have always seemed questionable to me at best. Some people like to say that every game pirated is a sale lost by the publisher, but that's not true. It completely ignores the ideas of demos, resale, returns, etc. And it ignores the possibility that someone pirates to try it out, then buys the game later when they have the money. Plus, some may be able to afford cheap pirated copies, but not a full price official one. There's just too many factors and possibilities for me to accept simple numbers like these.

In 2021 I'm running OPL (Open PS2 Loader) on my silver slim PS2 and running my favorite games through the wire on SMB (Samba Share). I got it hooked up with color stream RGB to one of my favorite little flat screen TVs. Long live the PlayStation 2. Greatest console of all time.

Yes, although google will never let me say that word combo either way due to the auto-blacklisting of most such words being thrown at it (you just said those two words), I think google's youtube bots is spying on me and my comments thinking I'm the worst guy on google/youtube!!!

So that’s the reason why the green tint was on there when you tried to playback DVD films in RGB Scart. I had to use a special cheat device just to strip out that annoying green tint just to WATCH DVDs legitimately in the best quality possible!!! Funny enough at least from the research I’ve done and by that I mean a lot, there was NEVER EVER a VHS/ S-VHS/D-VHS player released here in the UK that could actually record in native RGB Scart it was only composite or S-video. So Sony did an Anti-piracy measure for something that didn’t even exist! Not to mention DVDs already had copy protection on them to begin with so what was the point? Hollywood everyone.

Well, actually, not $60 - more like $80-100 after you add up import fees and some mark up by retailers. Any wonder why Russia and Ukraine had 90% piracy?

There was a bit of wrong information in this. The neokey info was correct, but alot of games that were dvd based had videos down sampled or had them removed so they could be fit on CD-R. Later on (about 8-12 months) a no swap / direct boot method came out for CD based backups, and swap for DVD-R based discs. Which then later came with no swap for everything. Back then DVD-R was also very easy to find (you could buy spindles of 100) so most backups were not DVD+R The first no swap chip was called the NEO4, and while I don't recall how many wires it was it was a LOT. After the neo4 if I'm not mistaken came the Magic3.1 Later came the DMS3, Infinity and modbo. And then even later the method for doing the mod via memory card came as well.

I had a NTSC-J PS2 at one point. Yeah. It really sucks when I have to take time recording Japan exclusive games on the NTSC-J Playstation 2, with PS1 Japan games too.

the ps1 and 2 are one of the best case studies on why piracy does not kill consoles or other media stuff cause the piracy did not stop the ps1 and 2 becoming highly successful, even the ds and wii could be used as examples. companies often mislead or forget that the percentage of poeple who would have brought if not piracy are really small compared to the larger the audience

Down here in Argentina piracy was the norm, i don't remember actually seeing a single original ps2 game ever, pirated games were also way cheaper, like incredibly cheaper.

The reason PS1 and PS2 were popular in my country is because they were sold moded so pirated games can be played, I do not know anyone who played original games on them.

As an Indonesian, what I can say is that piracy is often an economic issue. The PS3 for one, has a much better anti-piracy and the PS4 has even better. What happened was that people stopped buying PS3 and PS4. At most going to a $1/hr rental to play some PES or some other game they had at the public rental. In the end, it just funneled people to free to play MMOs, then to mobile games and Steam for hardcore players. Everyone I know used to own a PS1 and PS2. Now, I still don't know anyone that actually bought a PS4 even among my friends that have children. GGWP, you just shifted people to the more economic options because people pirate games for a good reason.

For those of you wondering about different parts of the globe - I grew up in Croatia, where every single one of my friends had a PS2 with dozens of games, and *NONE* of the games they had were purchased, but burned onto a bog standard DVD. It was considered weird for us to go out and buy a game with actual money, it was unheard of. This was the status quo across the country. In fact, legitimate retail chains across Croatia sold modified PS2 systems that could read any burned DVD out of the box. Think of it like going into a Best Buy and legally purchasing a jailbroken iPhone.
