The best part of the HD Retrovision cables is that you'll be guaranteed to not have annoying audio buzz that plagues cheap 3rd party cables

Agreed. The only thing you need to watch for is cheap switchers that can introduce noise. It can be tough to find good legacy switchers these days if you prefer mechanical/passive switcher boxes. The gcomp has me mighty tempted, but it is also quite pricey.

I have a pair of these PS2/PS3 HD Retrovision cables. They certainly get the job done and it's nice knowing they are well built. I had never used a cheap off-brand cable for PS2 so it's cool to see you testing a pair here. If I get asked in the future, I'll probably just recommend people go with the cheap solution as the image quality really didn't look different from the HD Retrovision option.

I have both and they are really close. Paired on an ossc you have to do passthru because of the nasty flicker affect on new tvs. I wish thier was a way to get rid of it. But apparently it inharent to the ps2 signal and the good qualities of the cable

I will say this: not all generic PS2 component cables are created equal. I got lucky with my set, but they were purchased several years ago and I've seen some bad examples from the recent Amazon stock - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-V-7EI8de4cM.html At $30, you're not taking that big a leap to know you're getting a quality product.

I have the first party cords for the ps3 HD They do work on the ps1 and 2. Using those cords are great. I’m getting burnt out on keeping up with my BW ps3 the 60 and 80

I have generic. Problem is if you move your setup the cables are so sensitive they break easily. 😒 I'm on my 2nd set of generic cables and I've had enough. Buying the retrovision set.

It depends brother, for example me, I had these chinese component cables, and they looked better BUT there generated incredible amount of interference! Then my brother gave me his PS2 original component cables and the picture was clear of all noise!! In summary, what I would say is, if for some reason you have a clean third party component cable, that doesn't give you interference, then you are lucky and don't need to buy Sony or Retrovision cables. Over and out.

Would be good to note that generic cables are a lottery. Some have crazy amounts of noise and audio buzz. It would just be best practice and business to buy the Retrovision cables because they are guaranteed to be good and they’re a great company to support. (Although as some have noted there are sometimes supply issues.)

Did you activate the PS2's graphical smoothing option for PS1 games on the PlayStation Driver when testing the component cables? If so, did you notice any smoother textures?

No, I hadn't thought to try it out, but that would be fun to look at. My default is usually towards maintaining the original look of a game and almost always for a sharper image, so I left my PS1 driver options where alone. When I think of smooth, low-res textures my mind automatically goes the a muddy N64-like image :D For PS1 games I can see the potential upside, as there was often some strange pixel distortion with movement.

Thanks for pointing out the Rad2X cables. They somehow flew under my radar and are definitely something I'll look into reviewing. Seem like they might be a legit solution. The mClassic has also had me intrigued for a while now.

I pre-ordered an HD Retrovision Component Cable for my PS2 Slim from Castlemania Games. I wish they produced a bigger batch at a time because it is taking forever.

Quick question, do you happen to know if there's any real point in getting the HD Retrovision component cables when you have the OEM Silver/Gold PS2/3 Sony cables?

I haven't compared them myself. In most cases, I would say OEM cables are going to be pretty decent. I can only vouch for the HD Retrovision cables being exceptional.

I know it's been a while since your question was asked. But I have both the PS3 Gold Component cables and the HD Retrovision component cables since I had that same question, and in my opinion, they both output an extremely similar image and audio quality. So to the naked eye, they'll probably look and sound about the same. So I'd say that the cable you can get for a better price is the way to, since both are very high quality.

The OEM ps3 era cables made by sony are perfect for component on ps2 and ps3 although the ps2 era component cables show ghosting effect on HdTvs

@@RetroTechSelectthe video quality also depends on the model of both PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2, I personally have a SPCH-9002 PlayStation 1 and a SPCH-39003 PlayStation 2

I think that it depends on the particular generic cable, I tested beyond good and evil on the ps2 whit composite vs my generic component and it has a lot of lighting overexposure, original composite is way better colors as well as my hd retrovision wii cables(btw beyond good an evil runs noticeable smoother on my bc Wii)

Having seen other comparisons, I think it is safe to say I lucked out with a relatively decent generic cable. I'm thinking I will revisit this idea at some point, comparing various cheap generic cables against higher quality options like Insurrection, HD Retrovision, and legacy Monster/Official cables. I actually have several types of Nintendo S-video cables that I would like to run head-to-head with official/pricey options.

Thanks! Yeah, I use the OSSC for 6th gen consoles (including PS2), and RetroTINK 2X to OSSC for older 240p devices.

Does anyone know of a comparison between an official sony component cable vs the hd retrovision component cables? Or does anyone have personal experience with this and please share? Thanks in advance. I'm looking at the official sony component cables and considering it just for the fact that it's original hardware but I'm open to other options because the prices are starting to IMO get a little out of hand.

I get that checkerboard display on some games on my component cables I paid 10 for. Is it cause they are unshielded I’m getting that checkerboard display?

Checkerboarding can certainly be a symptom of cheap cables (and are typical of junky S-video cables), but it wasn't uncommon for older titles to utilize dithering as a visual effect to simulate extra detail, color, or transparencies. Some PS1 games employed full screen dithering patterns that weren't visible on composite signals, but can become a little distracting with sharper output methods.

@@RetroTechSelect this is ps2 I’m talking about. And I can see the lines as soon as I fire up the ps2 so I know it’s not certain games it’s just what’s there. I ditched the cheap ones and picking up oem ps3 component cable ones to use in the ps2, I think that should be a clean display yes?

That should absolutely be an improvement. You shouldn't be seeing consistent patterns across different titles (PS2 games in particular).

This cable, unlike a lot of the HD Retrovision cables, does not feature a contrast/brightness switch. PS2 looks stellar on my consumer CRT with these, though.

Any answer please, i have a ps3 with original san andreas digital ps2 edition downloaded onto it. Playing it on my ps3 through a 43 inch modern lg tv through hdmi blurs the san andreas image awfully. Will a component cable make it look that much better? Thanks.

A component cable "could" look "better", depending on what you're looking for, but it wouldn't likely be sharper. San Andreas was an incredibly blurry game, if I'm remembering it correctly. Vice City also employed an annoying amount of motion blur as well, I believe.

@@RetroTechSelect yes it had blur but on my new tv it looks totally garbage i have to change screen resolution to 4:3 or 'original', would an upscaler work better?. I just want to be able to play san andreas ps2 version on a ps3 with great graphics. Guess i got some researching to do. Thank you for the reply. 👍

@@Wilko710 It's definitely up to preference. I would say that PS2 games just looked better on a CRT, but you can get a pretty decent image for a lot of them from a pair of these cables and a RetroTINK 5X.

You should not hope for YPbPr Cables for Dreamcast, these uses only 240p/480i Signal. So the VGA Output is better.

That's what's special about the HD retrovision cables. They will support 480p and 240p over ypbpr (component). I'm guessing that conversion process is what has slowed down their release.

@@GUN2kify the retrovision cables are doing a conversion. Vga to ypbpr. That's what us special about them and why people are waiting.

@@TheRealGara so it is just a VGA to YPbPr Converter, than not all games will work, sadly. But the most. ;) But then thers no difference to your external converter. It just recreates the YPbPr from RGB (they exist in VGA). btw: RGB , VGA and YPbPr are component signals , taht would make the irritation plausible.

It's honestly not something that would fit my setup, but ftom what I understand the HD-retrovision version of these cables will offer seemless ypbpr output while supporting the entire dreamcast catalog of rgb and vga games. So you'd get support for 240p, 480i, and 480p over ypbpr. Which is exciting for certain use cases. Component seems to be the common use way to refer to ypbpr so I tend to fall back on calling it that in order to not confuse people. I should probably just stop that.

I use a pair of GE 73344 mechanical component switchers. When I got my first one they were dirt cheap (~$10), but they aren't produced any more and I ended up paying about $30 for the second one. I love that they give me no visible signal degradation and don't require any power. I already have four power strips filled behind my setup, I don't need any more devices plugged in :D

The cables pass the image as-is, but most scalers and TVs have an option to stretch to 16:9.

@@inderjeetuppal6462 I will probably take grief for this, but I think TCL 4K TVs are a great value for money. Not the highest end devices, but they are inexpensive and perform well. RetroTINK products are the gold standard for upscaling right now. The TINK 4K is the top of the line, but the RT5X is going to be all that most folks will need. The 2X line is also excellent and much more afforable, but it lacks a lot of the features that the newer models have.
