Got this and golden eye for Christmas in 97. Best Christmas ever even with a 3 day long power cut meaning we couldn't play the games. Just sat in the front room looking at the boxes
Christmas 1997 for me: final fantasy 7, crash bandicoot 2, nhl 98 and a n64 with mario 64, lylat wars (star fox in europe) AND TOP GEAR RALLY! best christmas for me as well!
"The development of Top Gear Rally was done on Silicon Graphics machines, both because the official devkit came as a card inside of one, and also because Alias/Wavefront ran on them. Our artists had just done a PSX title and were skilled at low-poly modelling, so it wasn't hard for them to adapt to the N64. On the code side, I had a little 3D experience, but not much. It was trial by fire. Learning how surface lighting can be simulated with math was fascinating, and finding ways to efficiently store and render models was a lot of fun. I've always loved optimising stuff, so finding all the ways to optimise a render pipeline was like a kid opening a big box of new puzzles. Our tech director and my boss/mentor, Rob Povey, was the one who wrote the physics engine. I did nearly everything else: art pipeline, compression, controls, rendering, audio, UI, camera, replays, etc. That physics engine alone made my job look easy. Another guy burned out trying to do it before Rob took over. It was very challenging, with arbitrary car shapes whose wheels were NOT magically glued to a bumpy triangle ground mesh with different surface types like mud, sand, asphalt, snow, etc., not to mention obstacles like trees and rocks. Top Gear Rally was where I cut my teeth on 3D art, and I look back on it fondly, though I would do a far better job of it if I had a do-over. We were lucky that we could make a tonne of mistakes we could learn from while gamers were accepting of the early clunkiness in 3D games." -- Brian Fehdrau, lead programmer (Top Gear Rally - N64)
On Forza horizon 5 they have paint jobs people make like one he driving I do wall ride on every game even till this day 2022 still wall ride on Forza horizon 4 and Forza horizon 5
I remember this game being hard as hell. You have to drive almost perfectly in order to catch 1st place in time. The desert level in particular gave me sooo much trouble as a kid
Compared to most 32 bit Rally games I think the Top Gear series is rather easy. This game at least had the virtue of giving you a variety of options for wheel grip, acceleration and suspension. On the other hand Sega Rally 1 and V-Rally series were hard as bolts.
Very underrated game. Racing games ( other than the Vs games like Diddy Kong and Mario Kart ) didn't get much praise on the N64 but this one was awesome. If you managed to get your wheel stuck in the fence at 2:30 you could make your car jump in the air because of the physics glitch it would produce. I laughed so hard doing that for countless hours with a buddy of mine. :)
The whole thing is worth the watch SOLELY for nostalgia. But, watch the first race and FF to about halfway through! The progress made in skill is AMAZING! (Or, the elder sibling came in and took over.)🤣
Ice cream truck ftw! I remember thinking the puddles were graphically so amazing lol. The physics were rad, I remember my brother barrel rolling a car perfectly on one of the last levels after like 1000 attempts. So good.
Such a good game for its time. Most played n64 game for me too bad the cars weren't licensed, they did go onto make world driver championship with licensed cars but still preferred top gear rally.
Um dos meus favoritos também... Já o top gear rally 2 é ruim física pobre, gráficos piores, game sem personalidade... Prefiro o top gear rally 1 infinitamente.
I loved this game. I used to have all the special cars like the Cube, the Helmet and the long tack with the old ship and mines.... But for some reason, I wasnt able to play that special track on a race or tournament, it just was for practice... As I remember.
I wish just like blast corps, and perfect dark you could get this on xbox one with enhanced graphics. I tried to find it elsewhere only other place I could find it is an emulator. I still have my n64 and games to this day and this is one of them. It still all works as well as it did in the 90s.
They ported this game to PC. Name is "Boss Rally". It's hard to find nowadays. It runs with a smooth framerate as expected from a PC game. The menu system, SFX and music have been changed from the N64 though. The rest is basically identical.
I wish this could come to Switch NSO, brilliant game for its time ,better than Sega Rally in many ways. The handling dynamics are very detailed for 97. I think also people miss the fact because of the muted colour pallet how smooth an detailed the visuals are in TGR, Boss did a fantastic job, shame they didn’t get to do TGR2 as that’s a mess compared to this.
I played this game using the n64 steering wheel with the gas and brake pedals. It sounds cool on paper, but it's harder to play the game using those accessories.
Hey, dude. I'd like very much your video because is very helpful for me to playing. But..i have some joystick is M-Tech the type PS2 for my PC. So how to fix/change it to do control keys of n64 for my joystick
While I never minded this game, it’s tough as nails, way less fun than Overdrive (going 500kph in the Jag 😂) and pales in comparison to the racing games released before it.
