Lee Louviere I hate Early Access. I've never bought any, and I don't plan on doing so. I think it's like a safety net for in case the game is a fail. If the developers think the game is ready and it fails, they can always say, "We're still working on it, that's why it isn't working as it should".

I think it's become the new title for ongoing development. So it helps to read the announcements page for the game. If you see a bunch, "Added new feature, new zone, new stuff, yay", and the reviews are good, then it's a good investment. If you see "Fixed crash", and the comments say, "Is anyone working on this anymore, and at least one review says the game is unfinished, then bail out now.

That's what I do for 90% of my games. Humble Bundles or good sales. There are still some good games I buy at full price but they were still really cheap. Like Undertale, Shovel Knight, Freedom Planet & Downwell. Oh, and Xenoverse but I didn't preorder it. I just happen to be a big DBZ fan & really wanted a new game about it. I'd buy Fallout 4 but I really can't afford it right now.

But with DLC there are no advantages to preordering, so why do people do it

To be completely honest there are at least several games like that out there, they just aren't triple A titles or popular :/ Just most people tunnel vision on the big gaming companies these days and everybody expects them to deliver. I play Final Fantasy 14 and they come out with massive updates every 3 months and 0 micro transactions but I guess it isn't for everyone. But I played plenty of random non advertised games that I quite enjoyed that most people probably never ever heard of.

The difference is that everyone expected Watch Dogs to be like the second coming. The game was 8/10 overall, but the hype left a lot of people disappointed. Destiny would have been 6/10 even without the hype backing it.

What? The short hand story about watchdog is that they promised more than they could deliver. So of course, that is the proper definition about a "over hyped" game. EA, Ubisoft, and Take 2/2K actually ranked above Nintendo overall, and also had a higher percentage of games that got 75 or higher than Nintendo did. They still did the best of the console manufacturers though, but Sony held #5 and Microsoft #6, so they weren't ahead by much. And if you account for just the consoles and not include handhelds, Sony actually ranked higher than Nintendo on that front.

Johnny Organ one of my favorite bugs is the ones that came with Dawnguard which Permabroke your game (couldn't reinstall to fix this either) where you on many occasions would have a freeze up on the loading screen everytime you tried to fast travel to a major city. On top of that, you could only think of four?? Everyone else can think of four games that came out far more recently that were subpar. Don't believe me? Destiny, AC: Unity, Watch_Dogs, and Titanfall. Hell, even the Master Chief Collection was broken out of the gate and it's taken update after update for Battlefield 4 to still be JUST playable. In the past few years (and even farther) Nintendo has not released a game that has been unplayable without patches. You can argue that the new Smash Bros. games needed patches to play online, but the rest of the game was completely functional without it. Mario Kart 7 had the glitch in Maka Wuhu, but that was ONE track in the game that was only ever exploited online. And Pokemon X/Y had the save glitch, but that again was a REALLY SPECIFIC glitch. Try again. Bye.

The game doesn’t even looked rushed because the game was announced since 2019 and was delayed to 2021. I also, played the demo and it was so good. So the full game doesn’t look rushed to me.

They should just release this game every 3 years and have roster updates you can purchase as DLC at the begining of the season. i especially like the early access option on steam. u can look early via youtube then make a decision to either wait for full release or head straight for the alpha or beta. and once youve done it afew times and are aware of the potential save game loses its up to you if you buy in to it. and in some cases you can add to the game. like rimworld, if you pay £6 extra you get to add characters to the game.

You start races, and the other trucks literally don't even move. The bridges and buildings are only rendered visually, you can phase right through them, and when you finish a race, the grammar is so bad, the screen actually says "You're Winner". It's an absolute mess, and only entertaining because of how much you'd be laughing at it.

No it's not, it's called preloading the game which can take a full day for some people depending on internet speeds.

I mean quite honesty I could cry to see so many billboards in game stores, pre-purchase our game and you get a mode we selfishly ripped out the game for you, oh you didn't pre-order hmm tough shit you can't play that mode until you give us £8 more. So game developers we buy your game, you earn your lump sum and we find something's missing and we have to buy it for extra! Wow what a selfish publisher, you get money from game sales, the actual physical sale, if it were worthwhile DLC then I don't mind investing more into the game, but nah buying modes twice no thanks, extra costumes brought twice no thanks, extra characters that were complete on the disc (Ah ha Capcom Disc Locked Content) no thanks! I can't see gaming being worth it if this practice gets worse, what's next we can't boot up the game without purchasing the "play game pack" for £10 on top of the £55 I've seen for the game. Oh wait Microsoft tried DRM don't do it! You're killing the industry and make games complete again please without the annoying visible glitches that you can't be arsed to fix, what do you want us to do? Fix them ourselves? Give us the Dev kits and we'll learn how to fix bugs or even better re-release the complete version polished and theoretically bug free. well, the thing about digital downloads is that you actually don't need to take care of a disc. if you have for example a PSN user you can download the game. and say your house burn down... well get your incurance and get a new ps4 and BAM there are all your 400 games ready to download and you won't have to buy new discs. well wasn't that convenient? another example, yur favorite game, black ops 2 is on a disc and you play it 8-12 hours a day. now, your cousin, a 6 year old boy comes over, and he found you game stach and acidentally broke your disc... well aren't you fucked? so the only aspect of having a disc that I could find advantageous is that you could loan it to your friends, but I don't put that trust in anyone because the reasons above so I find that as a dissadvantage so there you go again. by having it digital you actually can't loan away your games so no need to worry about hating your friends because they loaned your game and never returned it

My last preorder was kingdom hearts 3D's, before that it was gta V. I only preorder a game if it is a collectors edition and has cool physical stuff.

The best games i have on steam (and i've over 220 games and the majority of them are mainstream, like Skyrim, Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creeds, etc) are the Early Access ones, Life Is Feudal: YO, DayZ, Project Zomboid, etc, in terms of fun they completly smashes the others, i stopped playin' DotA 2 like crazy because of them.

einar thor thrastarson Yep, after about 2 weeks of playing destiny I gave up and gifted the game to one of my cousins. She hates it too. Can barely give away that game. The only criticism I can give of your post is that I don't believe this is Bungies' fault. This was all Activision. Bungie was just the contractor that built the game. This is an ACTIVISION game. This game is exactly how Activision wanted it to be. An expensive cashgrab that gets you to buy even more DLC.

It came out, yes a lot of people had some fun on it, and it was a half-decent game! But within 1-3 months the talk of how good it was died out, and I still believe Rockstar are pathetic to produce a next gen version of it with 1st person being the only noticeable feature in it. When in reality one of the best things they could've done is produced a next gen version of GTA San Andreas. That was truly the best GTA game by miles, and producing that again with better player capabilities, larger scale maps, better graphical features etc. they could have arguably made a lot more on that than the next gen GTA V. I agree. Digital downloads make it so only your gamer tag is associated with that game. You can't just let a friend borrow it or play it whenever you want. Plus, resale value so you can afford another game.

Digital downloadable games always seemed like a dumb idea to me. Anyone can become a hacker, download the game for free, and then upload it to some pirate site. At least with physical copies, someone paid for the game. :/

You might distinguish between "physical" and "digital" copies of games, but you have to be aware of the fact that the actual game you are purchasing is, in both cases, digital data. If you buy the "physical" copy of a game, you buy a storage device with the game data on it. If you download the game, you get the game data on any storage device you already own. Whether you bought the data on a CD or you downloaded it is not what it's about.It's about if/what kind of DRM is tied to that data. That is what determines how much you truly own it. I've for instance purchased and downloaded many DRM-free games through the Humble Bundle site. They are not tied to any account, I simply got a link to where I can now download them as often as I want and save them anywhere I like. So I do in fact fully own them. (I could even burn them on a disc and make a nice cover, if I so desire. ;-) But I think that's kind of pointless, I'd rather have everything stored on my external hard drive.)

Depends on where you live my gamestop doesn't stock much if it isn't pre-orders. I got South Park Stick of Truth on day one and they had only two copies available to buy. I now work at a walmart and on day one we only get about two or three copies of a game until another weeks passes EDIT: I have pre-ordered Sun and Moon to secure both copies since pokemon is huge right now and I preordered Last Guardian Collector's edition because I absolutey love the figure and i am willing to take the chance of the game being bad because I know I'll like the figure no matter what (yes I do spend a pretty penny sometimes on figures..)

Well some of the games I personally play are niche titles, if I preorder there's guaranteed to be a copy just for me. If I don't, I have to hope one of the at most five copies they get are there when I get to the store.

The two before me have pretty good reasons. Nobody seems to be mentioning how important pre-order's are for the gaming company to make a profit though, including boogie. A company has to make a profit, otherwise no more games. Then everybody loses, eh? So it makes sense that games incentivize bonus content. There's this weird notion amongst gamers that the company's are making shitty games on purpose just to screw you, which is just crazy. It's no different with movies and novels, pre-order's mean money in the bank before it's even out. If a product sells well immediately, then there's more news and hype, thus causing more to buy the product or at least see what's going on. Then there's the question of how much money does the developer get if you buy a game from someplace else. Like Steam or Amazon? If you buy it used on Amazon, then the developer get's nothing. I can see people not giving a shit with a huge company like Blizzard, Ubisoft, EA, etc. But this can be really detrimental to indie developers or smaller Japanese companies that make niche RPG's, my personal favorites. Some games from Japan I've really wanted to play I never will because the sales were too low on other games, so a localization never happened. It's not all doom and gloom, or ultra selfish gamer's going "What are you gonna do for me!?", it's all pretty normal. Like I mentioned, movies and book publishers want those 'pre-orders' or day one money for the same reasons. The real nemesis here is DLC's. THOSE have ruined video games in the post 2010's...in my humble opinion.

I used to pre-order PC games at my local Gamestop only because they no longer kept new PC games in stock unless the game was extremely popular. They hardly had any PC games to begin with. This was before everything could be purchased as a digital copy. There's really no benefit to pre-ordering a PC game these days unless it's a huge game that can be pre-loaded.

If you had fun with the beta that is fine. When the game comes out if you like it and everyone you know hates it that is also fine. It is still a good idea to wait for the the final product. I was able to play Titanfall's beta and I loved it. I thought it was the next big game. As you probably recall that game basically was just the beta in content and was a let down. Kind of baffling how everyone has already forgotten about BF4 fiasco where it was completely broken game for almost 2 years with terrible netcode issues, driver problems, servers crashing constantly and lagging terribly. Mass Effect is way overrated Sheppard's body obstructs so much of the screen while it's mostly filler and the real meat of the game is mostly linear. I only played ME2 though so 3 might have more complex enemy and map design and more actual game instead of story choices.

I agree, i am totally behind this idea. DLC has a place, and it really is when it genuinely enhances the game. For instance, new missions/dungeons/characters/etc. But, these things shouldn't be removed from the game or be locked on the disc, unless the game is sold cheap (i mean really cheap, 10 dollars or less) and leverage DLC to complete it like a F2P mobile game. DLC should only be there to enhance what you got for 60 dollars (and the game is WORTH 60 dollars). I like RPGs, and if DLC were used to add/expand a new dungeon or new characters, after a reasonable amount of time has passed that i can at least believe that the developers were actually working on it after the game launched, i would be fine with that and support that

Free is better than what we have....for sure! I always enjoyed unlocking the features myself. One of the best examples would be n64's goldeneye. Unlocking all the characters and cheat functions of the game by performing well in levels and difficulties. Loved that....and the gradifcation from achieving some of those are some of my greatest accomplishments in gaming.
