At this rate it’s practically tradition now. “Gather round kids, let’s watch the leafs lose in a do or die game again!”

Except kids aren't watching anymore. Every other Toronto Team has won since the leafs last won or had relative success. I'm 30. My generation grew up watching the leafs make it past the first round for the last time. These kids born in the 2000s don't give a rats ass about the leafs

Difference between the Kane contract and Marner contract is Kane signed his contract after they won 2 cups and during the year they went on to win the third. Marner and the Leafs haven't won yet.

Bang on with the analysis, guys. This was hard, heavy but everything you said was fair. Mitch has fallen from grace and it's the doing of his own camp - he tries really hard but that contract demands the moon and stars. Morgan, from my vantage point on my couch, has been the captain for several years now - no piece of fabric will signify otherwise. I would love to see Spezza back. Freddy has been great but he is not the answer going forward - sell high and sell now. I would be completely okay going with Jack Campbell next season - I thought he was really fun to watch and just why not?

People don't like Marner because he wants 11 million AAV and he's a 8.5-9 million-dollar player. I'm sorry but the Marner we saw this year and in the playoffs isn't even that he was a 7 million dollar player and Nylander is an 8-9 million dollar player. I didn't foresee that but I said when Nylander signed his contract that I was fine with Nylander's contract and I said over and over that I was concerned With Marners contract because everyone was assigning him value based on one season. This argument about Marincin is stupid because He's not a full-time player. For a fill-in guy on a 2-way contract He did fine but you guys think what you want. He's gotta be good enough to fill in and clear waivers. The entire team refuses to play a system. They want to play the NHL the way people play the AHL. No direction, no plan, no reasoning, no communication, no defence. They are directed by the coach on how to play and they vehemently refuse to play that way. Whoever is the biggest problem with taking the direction and you sink their career. It sounds bad but they are screwing up this team so you put them in the press box and leave them there an if it's Mitch you pay him 11 million dollars to sit in the press box and you ask the rest of the team who wants to join him. Make sure he doesn't train or do a damn thing until he will never make another team ever again and you buy him out. Strike the fear of God into the players and say this is your coach and if you won't be coached we will end your career. Willy tries hard, wants to play, listens, and takes direction. If you trade Nylander trade Everyone including Matthews because you're rebuilding again because you're trading one of three guys who will take direction and no other player is. Matthews, Nylander and Rielly take direction.
@MiRiHi
@MiRiHi 4 года назад
You say you're against the big marner contract judging him based off of one season. Yet, you are for putting him in the press box and not even letting him train (really?), based off one bad season. You are just as irrational as the people who gave marner all the hype after 18-19. You don't lock up a player who is taking up 1/8 of your cap in the press box. *There is not one singular cancer in the room you can isolate and suddenly they all play good. This team doesn't work,* you re-imagine the depth and defense, and as a side effect one of your big guys leave as well (probably nylander as he is the only one with a movable contract). You don't sit your 11 million dollar star in his early-twenties over one bad season, especially since Marner actually does try. Think straight.

@nates9029
@nates9029 4 года назад
From an outside observer, this is exactly what every other fan base told you when you first signed Tavares and then gave Marner and Nylander their extensions, you put all your chips into your offense and said we will just outscore everyone and have a patchwork defense and we will win. The problem is that some other NHL teams can shut down your top line from time to time and what happens when they do that. The Leafs showed they don't have depth scoring. When you don't properly address your defense, you end up with Cody Ceci as one of your defenders. I get that Muzzin was injured but still. I didn't think Berrie was bad but Ceci and Marincin were dreadful and when you add the fact that Columbus was able to shut down your scorers for two games out of a five game series, you have problems. The Caps went through this when we had Semin and some decent pieces but when teams like Montreal shut down our best scorers and top line, we didn't have depth scoring to make up for it. We also didn't have a very good defense. We had Green but he was more an offensive defenseman than a defensive defenseman and we had Tom Poti who was okay but wasn't as good as we thought he was. We thought we would breeze through the playoffs with our offense and win a Cup...and then he ran into a hot goalie and a stifling defense and we were out in the first round. You guys did the same thing we did and I distinctly remember Steve's video when the Leafs signed Tavares where when people brought up the lack of defense he said that they would just score more goals than the other teams. The Leafs have a good core but they WAY overpaid for some of them and now tough decisions need to be made or this team won't move forward. I would love to have kept Mike Green, Mike Knuble, Marcus Johansson and many others but we couldn't because of the cap. The Leafs need to make some tough decisions. I think Nylander is the most likely person to go. You'll probably find a taker for his contract and he has value. I don't see anyone taking Marner, not for his cap hit. The Leafs WAY overpaid him. I wish they had won because the Toronto fans deserve to have a winning team but they have painted themselves into a corner and now they need to figure a way out and the only way out means making some tough choices.

Agreed on all accounts aside from Barrie. He was AWFUL this series and showed that if he's not able to put it together offensively he's literally just a $6mil liability on the ice. I agree with you that Willie is definitely the most movable contract; JT has a no-trade, Auston is a franchise player who's only getting better (nobody in their right mind trades him), and as you mentioned Mitch is WAY overpaid and not a snowball's chance in hell another team is paying him. Dubie is in for a very challenging off-season if he wants to right the ship.

@nates9029 4 года назад
@@sdude55 - Yeah, I was more focused on Berrie defensively as opposed to his offense. He wasn't bad defensively but that might have just been comparing him to who else the Leafs had on defense since many of their other defenders were horrible. The Leafs have some serious issues. I agree with you about only Matthews being the players you don’t trade. TOR needs cap desperately though, and even if they wanted to, I don’t think any team will want Tavares, Marner, or Nylander (51% of total salary cap- with Matthews) at the price they are signed to- at least not in a deal that TOR would see as beneficial. There are some teams that would take them just to gain a good player, but it would have to be treated like a cap dump at their prices. The only somewhat likely option is a trade that slightly favors the other team, but the Leafs would have to retain between $2.5-4m- which the Leafs won’t do. I’ve been looking over this a lot the past couple days... the Leafs have $4.1m next year to re-sign: Mikhayev, Ceci, Barrie, Clifford, Malgin, Dermott, Spezza, and Gauthier. Jack Campbell’s salary goes up by $1m next year. Dermott and Mikhayev I assume they want to re-sign at least. Dermott will probably get $1.5m (650k increase), Mikhayev will probably get $5m ($4.1m increase), and all of those other players would have to be replaced at league minimum- and they’d have to move some money still. Ceci and Barrie are the only two who make more than league minimum out of those guys, but their $7m total doesn’t make up the $14.3m over the cap that the Leafs are right now, and is already factored into the fact they’ll only have $4.1m in cap space. If you were to sign other players to fill Ceci and Barries spots (assume 2nd pairing), you probably save from $0-1.5m. If you want to keep any of the league minimum players, they probably get small increases, but even if you re-signed all those positions at league minimum, the Leafs are $16.3-17.8m over the cap if they want to re-sign Mikhayev (assuming $5m) and they need to sign 3 D, and 4 more F in addition to him.

Despite what these bums have to say, Andersen was the deciding factor in this series. Before you all scream about his numbers being decent, the game winning goal in game 1 and the second goal in 1-0 game in game 5 in the third period were soft goals that sunk our team. Regardless of how he did the rest of the game, the guy across from him did better on both those occasions, and let in 2 soft goals, and in a series were we got outscored 10-9 at 5v5, it was the deciding factor that titled it in Columbus' favour. Moreover, go look at game 7 in 2018 and 2019 against Boston as objectively as possible, and just count the number of soft goals that he lets in. He's the main reason we cant win a clinching game, consistently giving up soft goals in untimely points will cost us

@isthatyoubetha Steve's analysis was accurate though. If Marincin wasn't in no man's land Freddie would have likely had that save. He had to pay attention to both the shooter and passer which he shouldn't have had to do. A lot of goaltending comes down to no only good d, but goalies having trust in their d. This problem is far larger than Freddie, even though I will say he isn't a top 10 in the league

I don't think many of you understand that during playoff hockey there isn't many of these pretty goals. goals are scored by throwing the puck low on the goal and crashing the net hard for a rebound. That is something the Leafs are not built for and you see the result. It's just facts. Most of CBJ's goals were either deflected off someone or the crash the net hard. That's how you're suppose to score goals in these close games

Fully agree with the point about liking your group! Penguins get swept by the islanders and we curse them out but we still like the group and their identity. They lose to the Habs, we curse out decisions, certain players, certain plays, but i still like the group. I like the Jets group, i like the Stars group, i like the Isles group. Who doesn't love the canes group? theres something rotten in the leafs group and i don't know where it stems from but they are not likeable

I would take a look with the leafs at what the flyers had to do 3-5 years ago. Start drafting and bringing in a couple strong prospect defensiveman and surround them with a couple good vet d men. Give up those 3rd line forwards to relieve cap space and start building for 2022 and 2023

Just wondering. Leafs took on lehner’s cap hit of 1.5m fro him to head to Vegas. Since the leafs have paid out a lot of the players salaries up front. Can they move portions of players cap hits to other teams in trades? (To teams that won’t need to actually pay money out, just absorb the hit)

Here’s what I’d like to see next season. Soup/ Tavares/ Marner Mango/ Matthews/ Hyman Roberson/ blank/ kappy Engvall/ spezza/ blank(grinder) Extras bracco/ brooks Rielly/ blank Muzzin/ liljegren Sandin/ holl Freddie/ Campbell I say trade Willy or possibly marner for a parayko type guy who can play with mo. Throw in dermott/kerfoot/bracco if that would get it done. Would like to see dermott stay but if it means we got a big upgrade like parayko I’d do it in a heartbeat. Also keep mango for now while his value is low and maybe trade him next deadline if he’s still not working out and move Robertson up at that point. We need another stud defence man desperately and they can’t be smaller puck moving guys. Also wouldn’t hate if Clifford stayed on that 4th line if it didn’t cost much salary but that second round pick is steep for a replaceable guy. No idea what to do about that 3rd line centre but a tough defensive style guy would be ideal for me

To remind you, the Justin Holl signing on New Years Eve was because the Leafs were @ Minnesota and Justin Holl is from Minnesota. Dubas and Keefe both like making meaningful moments. It was the exact opposite of the Babcock/Spezza Home Opener vs Ottawa. So quibble about price+term if you wish, but the date was pretty reasonable.

I disagree with Jesse. You can't compare the NBA to the nhl when it comes to seeding going into the playoffs. Looks at last year. The blues were the worst team in the nhl the first two months, turned it around got into the playoffs and won the cup. La kings first cup of there dynasty they were the 8th seed in the west. When was the last time the 8th seed won a NBA championship? I agree the leafs aren't good but you can't use the NBA to draw that conclusion.

Marner's contract is absolutely movable to a floor team once his bonus is paid. And in fact, this.. the SECOND year of the deal is actually the easiest year to trade because he makes league min and actual dollars paid for every subsequent year is much closer to market value, below 9M. Marner's camp couldn't imagine a scenario where he could be considered a trade piece after 1 year but now he definitely is and they need to cash out on him immediately.

The leafs big contracts are so heavy front loaded that in actuality there is not that much actual money to pay but teams that have trouble spending to the cap floor! And trust me marner will get the most back for
@mikeunconfirmed1489
@mikeunconfirmed1489 4 года назад
Yes! MLSE needs to flex their financial muscle here and weaponized their front loaded contracts against teams struggling with Covid. Carolina, Arizona, Florida, Buffalo. For example trade Marner + Nylander after you pay their signing bonus for either Eichel (unhappy in buffalo) or Aho. After the bonus Marner gets $700k and Nylander gets $3m. So a team like Buffalo would be financially motivated to survive Covid yet give the illusion of spending to the cap. Then use cap savings to get Taylor Hall at a fair $9m. Hall becomes your 3rd line center. Trade kerfoot/Johanson for cap space to be used on D. Hyman-Matthews-Eichel/Aho Robertson-Tavares-mikheyev $700k Free agent-Hall-Kapanen Engvall -Spezza- $700k free agent
