"I feel like if I overthink the waves, they usually don't work out." This is what I discovered with clouds. I used to painstakingly do a "portrait" of each cloud...and they ended up looking like they were made of concrete. I've loosened up and now they really do seem made of water vapor.

watching you paint is so inspiring!! My grandpa was a painter, so I have a bunch of his acrylics~ at 22 I have been feeling a lot recently that it’s too late for me to pick up a new skill if I’m not good at it right away but you teach in a way that makes painting feel so accessible! Especially with sharing that you’re still experimenting etc:) Thankyou!

It's literally never too late. I started painting at the age of 38 and surfing at 54. I would argue that you learn faster when you're older. The reason most people fail at learning something new is that they quit. You're so young! Go for it, and keep going.

Enjoyed the painting session. There is a lot going on. I think its the first time i have seen you with buildings in the foreground on a coastal painting. How the eye travels across your painting and you keep the viewer interested in it is a thesis in itself. Maybe its one to re-visit again sometime. Reminds me to challenge myself which is something i don't do often enough. Brilliant as ever - best 15mins of the week!

I agree that analyzing the paintings that didn't work is really important ... I often do repeated versions of same scene with the old painting as sort of a reference and change the problem areas on the new one or start fresh again ... Wiping out with paper towel and scraping thick paint with pallet knife also good ...also The beach houses have a bit of a Hopper feel to them nice color/light and shadow ...

I think this painting is successful as a plein air sketch/painting. I agree with your analysis, although overall I didn’t notice much of what you pointed out as a problem, but I can see where improvements could be made. I really like the addition of the houses to the beach scene, something I avoid but will give it a try. I loved how you tackled the red on the house, the mix of red and purple really works for me! Your doubts about the composition, I think, are unwarranted. The buildings in the foreground are like an explosion. There is no doubt at all where the beginning of this story is. So many paintings fail to deliver this starting point. Here you are immediately drawing the eye to mystery. We are looking into a yard that is cut off by the frame in the very, very bottom right of the picture. My curiosity is immediately aroused. What's down there? Who lives there? I go back to the buildings for clues and then notice the broader scene. From the yard I move to the dwelling and from there to the ocean and distant headland and back again - a cycle that repeats until I can hear the muted roar of the waves, smell the salt on the air and, more than anything, actually feel in my chest the sensation of witnessing something special.

My eye was drawn to the red house and the light hitting it. Our eyes are naturally drawn to the darkest dark against the lightest light, plus red is a pretty eye catching color. I love the houses and I believe it wouldn't take much to "fix" the painting with the ideas you mentioned. Lately I have been going through old paintings from years ago and seeing all the things that need addressing which is a great way to see how much I have learned! It is funny how I felt I wasn't improving, I guess the growth is so gradual it seems insignificant. I must remember to leave some of my old paintings untouched, so I can revisit them down the road and see where I came from. Your Videos are always interesting and you are always inspiring Michael!
