Michael, it is true. The ideas we see in the painters we admire, will come out in our work. Either consciously or subconsciously. Part of self-discovery, (I have found at least), is building on the things I see in paintings and painters I love and trying to understand how they did it, so I can figure out how I would do it. Your suggestion is spot on. Surround yourself with work and you'll become better by osmosis.

Yes! It is always good to study and take a lead from the great painters of the past. Corot and the painters of the Barbizon School are excellent role models. Painting on a larger scale is always challenging when working outdoors. Some artists of the past, including Adrian Stokes RA who painted in France in the late 19thc, often had a hut built at a location from where they could store a 6ft canvas and continue to work en plein at the same time of day over many days when the light was right. Lastly, always try to paint from the soul and from inspiration, rather than for the market. That's why the great painters were more often than not impecunious during their lifetimes. You've pulled off a good larger plein air painting which is always a challenge.

But it is the common everyday scenes painted by those upstart "Impressionists" that caused their rejection by the painting establishment in France. Funny how the times they are a changing.

Thoroughly enjoyed this video because it is always interesting to see the two of you come up with different compositions in the same scene, and really loved your painting. I can really see your growth as an artist in this one. Very good work. Channeling your Corot has been a positive experience for you. Your idea of studying composition, form (masses) and color from the masters is a good way to learn and improve our own work. Thanks for that and sharing your painting process with all of us!

I love your channel . My life story is similar to yours in many ways . I started with blocks of balsa wood in the 50’s and was discouraged from following art “no money in it” Now just shy of 80 I have found my way back to art as I love the challenge and the problem solving . I have been able to make a few dollars to help in my retirement . I admire that you are so brave to show your vulnerable side. Thanks Ken from Elora Canada

So many insights packed into one video. 6:30 I'm red/green colourblind. If someone said 'look at those red flowers/buds in that green bush I'd be like what flowers/buds?' but painting is helping my observation skills especially when it comes to colour.

Another very helpful video that left me inspired to get outside and paint again. Unfortunately the stretch of cliffs on the Jurassic coastline in Dorset, where I often go, had a major landslide last week. 300 metres fell onto the beach!! The worst landslide in 60 years so it’s changed that whole stretch of coastline now. If you are interested in looking it up it’s between Eype and Seatown.

Michael, always enjoy your videos and paintings. Love all your work, but your recent stuff shows a breakthrough to yet another level of mastery. This is a such a beautiful landscape. Loved the confident brushwork, and the cool alizarin shadows against the warm light in the mid ground. I always envy and admire how you to know when it’s time to stop. You certainly won’t need it, but good luck anyway on your upcoming show. John, South Florida

Thanks, Frank. Detail in the foreground would draw the eye. The thing that attracted me to the scene was the trail on the hill, so I put more detail and color variety in that area. I want the eye to pass over the foreground into the distance.

So interesting that you mention Corot because I just started doing close study of some Corot paintings to see if I can learn some of his technique. I know he was one of the early proponents of Plein Air painting, but some of his paintings look so good I wonder if he still painted in layers in several sessions. Either way his paintings are really good, and I think you can see his impact on painters like Monet and Sisley. Beautiful painting!

Are the simple paintings of things with little details called abstract paintings? I saw a painting you did with Emma as a child very simple but you could still identify her figure. That to me is intriguing to be able to do in a painting.
@chamberlainpaintings
@chamberlainpaintings 3 года назад
They wouldn't be considered "abstract art" since they are representing a specific subject, but the subject is broken down into abstract shapes and details are limited. I've noticed that you can usually identify an individual based on their outline or silhouette. If the shapes are correct the viewer will fill in the details.

Maybe you have a slight color blindness to the red spectrum. I have a friend who is totally color blind and in my research for him I learned that that is very common in men and can develop as we age (no offense) I’m your age. There are color tests online that you can do to gauge your perception. I can see a higher than normal range of color but it doesn’t help much since I suck at values!
@chamberlainpaintings
@chamberlainpaintings 3 года назад
I've done the tests and have no problem with the red spectrum. I'm talking about deciding when blue/green (for example) needs more red to get it where I want it to be. Or when a gray I've mixed needs more red. I'm talking about the way red modifies colors. It's not as obvious as the way blue and yellow modify. Hope that makes sense!
