I can remember when I was 5 or 6 years old and going in after supper and lying on the bed with my big sister in her room and listening to my dad and Neighbors running 4 or 5 old two lunger John Deeres putting up Cotton ground at home in the evenings he had a long 40 on our home place a long 40 was a 1/4 mile wide and a 1/2 mile long..Mr. Cooper had the field beside it which my dad later bought He ran John Deeres too. They always sounded better than those Farmalls some of our other neighbors used..
Definitely can't beat the sound of the John Deere two-cylinders. Surprisingly I have two Farmalls as well (Super M and 300), but my John Deere holds a spot near and dear to me. Thank you for sharing your story as well!!
My Dad bought a new 1952 Allis Chalmers-WD, not the 45, with the adjustable wide front end. To this day it’s never had had a clutch or rebuild or a tear down. We pulled two disc plows or two bottom plows. The only “major” problem was a couple of burned valves in different years. Too much plow is never good. I love this old machine strolling with two 18’s. Much of our land is tight red clay in North Carolina.
I remember listening to my dad plowing at night with the 70 diesel and a 3- 16 John Deere plow. There was a long hill in one field that would have the end of the muffler red hot by the time you made it to the top.
My dad would tell the same story as well about an Allis Chalmers WD-45 they had on the farm growing up!! A few years back I was using a Allis Chalmers B to plow my garden at night and seeing the muffler turn red made me smile. Crazy the amount of work that farms were able to get done with these smaller tractors!
Thank you very much. It was certainly a fun day. I used to plan my spring around getting my antique tractors ready for plow day. It hasn’t worked these past few years, but it was really fun to make it to one this year. The fact that most of those tractors are around 70 years old and still going strong is really awesome.
It definitely was. Perfect morning. And the plow was definitely a good match. That tractor could easily handle one more bottom, but it was doing a good job.
I love the sound of the John Deere 2 cylinder under power. They also sound good making ice cream. We have a guy the has an old engine that make ice cream at the fair. Sounds good, tastes good, lol.
Couldn’t agree more on the sound of the 2 cylinder. I can never tell what I like more, hearing them idled down low or hearing them bark when they’re working. Such a fun sound though. That’s awesome about using an old engine like that to make ice cream. That’d be really cool to hear.
You will hear a pop pop then it just runs for a couple of seconds and then you will hear part of a pop to 2 pops and the cycle continues. They have all kinds of flavors. Man I'm getting hungry for a snack, lol.
Love plow days, all the different tractor and plow combinations Yours is doing a great job! I know I’m watching this 3 years later, but do you still have the tractor? She runs strong!
Completely agree! It just so happened this two bottom is all that we had. It does make it work in heavier ground, since they are 16” bottoms. But agree that a 3 bottom would be nicer!
For about 6 years straight I helped organize and put on a plow day at my Dads farm. Always a fun timing seeing the old tractors work. Plus you don’t see too many guys plowing anymore, so that was fun. It hasn’t worked out to attend the past three years, but finally got to this year. Such a fun time.
I’d definitely agree with that. Plow days are always a little tough though because you never know what plow you’re going to get behind. I’ve unfortunately lined up behind a Farmall Cub once that basically left a 4” deep furrow. If it were just me going back and forth, I’d probably try and set it differently. But with so many other different types of plows and tractors in the field, I usually don’t try to hard and more just enjoy the sounds of the tractors. Thanks for watching!
If I remember measuring correctly, this is a 2-18", so a little bigger than the 14" or 16". I do agree that the tractor is a bit overkill. It'd certainly pair up nicer with a 3-16". But since this was the original plow that came with the tractor, just kind of kept the two together.
