This is so important for anyone embarking on an apprenticeship, I’ve known sparky apprenticeships where the company had actual licensed engineers but were deliberately delaying the apprentices months sometimes over a year so as to save pay. I’ve even seen companies drop the accredited course needed near the end of apprenticeships and lay off the apprentices. Some truly shocking and appalling things, some companies are borderline criminal.

Thanks for this video man, I highly appreciate it. I found out a whole bunch of massive flags at my current plumbing company, I'm almost about to hit my first year mark and came into the plumbing trade as a greenie, let alone blue collar in general. My company charges top dollar for labor charges, yet the only guy at our company who is actually licensed is our boss, which is a master plumber. All the guys on the plumbing side are still technically "apprentices" through licensing standards, yet they're doing work that is required to have a license, such as new construction, which requires for a master or journeyman to be on site, but the master isn't there. Last month, I got tired of my bosses antics and charades because I felt like I was hired on as a glorified laborer/handyman, and the disrespectful trash that comes out of his mouth. So, I ended up going to another plumbing company to see if they were hiring apprentices because I actually want to do plumbing work, not weird stuff that isn't even related to actual plumbing. The other company said I wasn't even registered through the state, I was shell-shocked to hear that. I was fed false-information about how my boss was going to register me after 30 days, but it turns out that didn't even actually happen, and I'm about to hit my first year with several hours that aren't even documented. The other company helped me get registered through the state and told me I need to give that to my boss, just so I don't lose my hours because the other plumbing company wants to get me on board and start actually teaching me plumbing theory. I did exactly that, handed my paper work in and my boss said he would take care of it. A month has dragged by and he wasn't doing it, even though it took less than a few seconds. I finally got somewhere recently, but I have no idea if he actually submitted the paperwork or if the state is backlogged with so much crap. And it's hard not to raise any suspicion because I feel like they know I'm giving off the vibe that I want to get the hell out of there. It's so frustrating because the other company wants to get me on, but they want to make sure I get my actual hours so I don't end up getting screwed out of a years worth of work. And it's funny, he promised the world to me during my interview and said that if I was adamant about wanting to exceed ambitions, they wanted to make sure I get there and they wanted me on as an apprentice, not a laborer. But it doesn't seem like that, it's easier for them to keep me unregistered and get cheap labor than to actually do plumbing stuff. Hell, they still haven't allowed me to solder a pressurized copper water line, yet I've done it plenty of times as practice on my free time, and I'm a year within the trade. It sucks that some companies out there like to screw with their workers and see how much leeway they have to exploit the rules and their workers.

I’m so sorry to hear about this friend. I’m glad you’re out of that mess and you’re on your way to a better future. Stories like this really infuriate me. The dishonesty is almost evil. Kudos to you for understanding something fishy was going on, and kudos to you for getting out of there. Please keep me posted on your progress and remember, even if he doesn’t submit your paperwork and you don’t get your hours from him, it’s still better than being 4 years in with him and STILL not signed up with the state. Best of luck friend!

@@Kennymolotov Hey man, I'm just following up with an update. Almost two weeks ago, I ended up putting my two weeks notice in when my master plumber boss was on vacation to the other boss. I explained to them that I needed to step back from life because I recent suffered the death of my mom in May. Last Monday, my Master Plumber pulled me to the side and attempted to dissuade me from resigning. He actually had the intent of bringing on a licensed Journeyman onto his crew, and since he can have so many people on his crew for whatever tax and osha reasons, he was gonna actually fire the other apprentice that was hired on with me right around the same time. He started to give me a whole bunch of sugar coated lies, as to how I'm more of an ambitious and hard working apprentice than the other apprentice. He also threw in the whole one dollar raise bs on me, since I just passed my one year mark in early June. He gave me a few days to ponder on my decision. The next day, I asked him what his ultimate goals, as to whether I stayed or left. If I stayed, he would've fired the other apprentice and kept me on to do more rigorous tasks, but that's probably a lie and they would've stuck me on non-plumbong related tasks. If I was keen on leaving, he told me he wouldn't let me finish my two weeks and my last day would be this upcoming Monday. It gets worse, he also told me if I intended on leaving, the opportunity of going back to this company would be closed, which is funny, because all of my bosses fed me lies about how much respect they had for me. And to add salt to the wound, he told me it was "No hard feelings" and I could still go on their stupid camping trip. I originally planned on going to the trip, solely because my coworkers are cool, but I decided at the last minute not to go and ultimately bailed out on going and didn't tell anyone. Since Monday is my last day, I'm not gonna give them the employee respect of working and I'm gonna go into the workplace in the morning and turn in my uniforms. It doesn't matter, the other plumbing company, who told me about the unethical behavior of my current one, is taking me onto their payroll this Tuesday. Thanks for inspiring me to get out of this hell hole, @Kenny Molotov. You're an awesome content creator and I truly appreciate your authenticity and unbiased videos. Especially your depression video.

Friend, I need to start off by saying I’m so sorry to hear about your mom. If you add me to Instagram (if you have it) and you ever feel like chatting about your loss, or even this situation you’re in, let me know…my heart goes out to you and your family ❤️ Secondly, and it seems like you already know this, but just to reiterate…you are losing absolutely NOTHING by leaving this company. If he told you that you are not welcome back because you want to pursue your individual growth, then you would never be welcome back. I’m proud of you for fighting for your future. Be respectful tomorrow when you walk out, and promise your older self you will never take advantage of an apprentice like he did. The world is your oyster friend. I’m rooting for you ❤️.

that's why when I see "apprenticeship" advertised I ask them if they are registered with the state. Then I look up the program standards, and ask my pre-apprenticeship instructors about them if they are registered with the state. One of the nice things about the States here, quite a number states have an official registry and keep track of your hours and issue you a journeyman card from the Dept of Labor & Industry. The apprenticeships that register have to comply with certain standards.

Thank you for the info! Just started my plumbing apprenticeship in September this year. However they did start me as a serviceman, I did get my own work van and I do run service calls as far as clogged drains. Nothing more severe than that right now. Other than that I work with a journeyman doing rough in’s, above rough in’s and finishing jobs.

@@BrianBrown-mq6nb that’s awesome I am going to work for radiant plumbing as an excavation crew member, but they told me that the hours will count for my apprentice license since I’m going to be doing plumbing excavation and sometimes helping out installing pvc. I have an interview on Tuesday, but I know I’m hired my worry is if I will be able to move up to do more hands on service and not just excavation.
@BrianBrown-mq6nb
@BrianBrown-mq6nb 2 года назад
@@brayantavera3427 So to complete the 5 year apprenticeship program through the union hall including 5 years of classes and working hours, you’ve got to get 8,750 hours to take the test then you turn out. Really at any point in time you can turn out or take your journeyman test but it’s a bunch of stuff to learn over the years. But if all they’ve got you doing is excavation and installing pvc underground it’s going to be hard to learn all the service and new construction codes. You learn how to test backflows, osha 30 class, lift training. Will you learn all the components of a water heater?

Alot of plumbing companies seriously take advantage of experienced apprentices, they will hire you with promises of giving you your own truck soon or paying you a higher wages soon, and still have you doing the entire jobs and not paying you what you are truly. This is the reason the trade is so hard to get into

Another problem I've seen with companies' lack of transparency with guys who want to go back to school. They constantly leave guys in the dark as to WHEN they can go to school, at whatever level they're in. There are some guys on my crew who have been in their apprenticeship for 6 years and are only level 4's because of how many times the company held them back from going to school due to their own reasons. The excuse is usually to do with the company being "too busy" to send guys back to school, I feel it's more of an issue with not wanting to pay guys more money if they can get the same quality of work from them at a lower level wage. Guys end up having to quit the company to go back to school on time and miss out on E.I coverage through the apprenticeship program in our province. A five year apprenticeship can turn into 8 really quick if you hook up with a company who promises you the world but doesn't help you get your education in the right time frame.

My first day as an apprentice I was a helper in a commercial stack replacement. I got my van at 6 months and it was scary doing my own jobs especially because I was so used to commercial repairs. So service and drain cleaning was scary but I could change out a 4” CI main line for a building no problem. I had to learn service calls and drain cleaning myself. I’m a year half plumber and doing shower valves and brazing 3” copper pipes solo. The learning and experience is awesome but I was still getting apprentice pay. The true question is: are you in it for the trade or the money? Tbh it started as the money and I fell in love with the trade. I’m with a different company now and making commission but I owe my skills to my previous company. Ya, I wasn’t getting paid the amount I should have for the jobs I was doing. But I took the skills I learned and went to someplace where the pay accordingly. I made $600k for my company my first year and made $34k now I’m at a company that pays 24% on every job I do is awesome. So, apprentices get your hand dirty and keep pushing on and every time your in a dirty shitty job, just say “smells like money”

Another thing that has happened to me many times is that I was doing all the hard work and then the foremen who was smoking on all corners of the job site all day, talking to everybody took all the credit for it because he is the one that talks to the boss directly . So my advice for apprentices that can work on their own is to take pictures of the work they do and keep it for their records (I also used that as proof of what I can do when I was looking for a new job) and don't get caught on your phone doing that lol

You're from Toronto correct? Could you do a video on the steps to secure an apprenticeship? I'm 29 with 0 plumbing experience and kind of intimidated by how hard it seems to be able to successfully break into the trades in general, not just plumbing. I was working for a shipping company for awhile and they promised me welding experience, which was a total sham so I would come in every day and do crap jobs no one else would do. It's seriously hard to secure anything if you have no friends/family or are working already doing this kind of stuff.

@@Kennymolotov Yeah, I am understanding that more, I wonder how many good plumbers the trade is loosing because of these companies doing this? I know I was an "auditor" for my first year, which meant I did all the cleaning, really no plumbing at all. Which my company did tell me this was the way it was going to be. 2nd year, I was signed up as an apprentice and the year one hours go towards the hours needed, but still no real plumbing, as you said it would be, It just sucks, I want to learn, but the only way for me to learn, is to go get side jobs and do the plumbing myself, which is OK, because being low man on totem pole, I am laid off when work slows, which it seems to have gone to snail mode now.

@@Kennymolotov Where I'm at in 3 years total you can get your Master's from apprentice. When I started it was the same situation with the 3 months of training and then started as a drain tech. It seems they keep you ignorant longer on purpose I mean if you're gonna have to put in 5 years it doesn't seem worth it I would've just went to college. I would add a disclaimer to your video saying that you're a Canadian union trained plumber because your advice doesn't really fit for the US unless you're in New York. It was a complete slap in the face saying people don't know anything after 3 years when after 3 years I was already trained in all things residential/commercial service plus I've done a lot of commercial new construction so when you say things like that you're devaluing every plumber who didn't do exactly what you did for training. It's blows my mind you would even say that a third year knows nothing when yall are still cutting pipe carrying the bag at the 3rd year when we have guys getting their Master's card at that time. Maybe try saying if you go Union in Canada you won't be a capable worker for 4-5 years.

Just politely go up to your boss at the end of the day and say “look I really was hoping to get more hands on experience and learn the trade, my real desire is to become a plumber. Is there any chance you can get me to do more jobs rather than just cleaning?” Make sure it’s polite and professional and we can take it from there...hope this helps Jorge.

Good morning. I’m 38 years old and I’m getting into the plumber field super late in life. I graduated from trade school this past August. I’ve been trying to get a entry level apprenticeship but every job I applied to either wants a minimum of 1 year experience or they want to pay me 10 dollars an hour in cash. The only opportunity I have is for roto rooter which I have a interview for. Any advice

@@Kennymolotov I’m in Long Island New York. I got hired by rotor rooter but it’s not really plumbing and plus they require you to buy a van after your 13 weeks of training which is ridiculous to me.

Hey friend, I was asking because I know some programs that you could join here in Ontario Canada, but I’m not familiar with any in Long Island. The roto rooter road sounds expensive, and I’m also very apprehensive about you needing to buy a van. Usually the company buys the vehicles…so it’s a bit strange to me. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help. Hopefully someone on the channel sees this and can give you some pointers.

@@Kennymolotov I appreciate it. Yeah roto rooter only does drain work so here you don’t need a license to do it. But yeah they require you to buy a van by the end of the 13 weeks of training. I’m trying to get into the union here but they don’t hire until august so I’m just looking for something to hold me over until I can apply. I do enjoy your videos and I am learning from them so thank you for the good content

Hey Kenny, I know this is an old video - but what do you mean by “signing you up” as an apprentice? I thought being an apprentice was just working under a licensed plumber for like 4,000 hours and then you’re good to go to get your license?
@Kennymolotov
@Kennymolotov 2 года назад
To become an official apprentice and start your apprenticeship in Ontario Canada, you and your employer need to fill out the forms from the college of trades to be signed up as an official apprentice. Once those forms are filed, from that point forward you are considered an apprentice and will be sent to school 3 times and you need to finish 9000hrs of work. Once you finish 9000hrs and pass all 3 in class sessions you can then challenge the Red Seal (licensing exam). Once you pass that you are officially a Red Seal Journeyperson.

Hey Tristan, you have to see for yourself. It’s a legitimate business, I assume most are honest and hardworking. But like anything you have to filter it on a business by business basis. Just keep your eyes and ears open, and have faith. Not all businesses are scams, but we must still be cautious. I hope this helps ❤️☮️

Tremain, I'm sorry to hear about this experience man. I was wondering if it is at all possible to keep the hours logged with this company and put them towards your apprenticeship? I know here in Ontario Canada, as long as I can prove with pay stubs that I was working for a plumbing company, I can use ALL those hours towards my apprenticeship, even though I wasn't Officially signed up as an apprentice...Take a look into it, you still might have a chance to keep those hours. And let me know what you find!

Dion if roto rooter is making you buy a van, it sounds like something you can and should avoid. The company should own its own vans and supply their workers with them.
