Ply-Split Joins

Bulky yarns often mean bulky and highly visible joins in the fabric on my Rigid Heddle loom. In this video tutorial, I’ll show you how to divide a 4-ply yarn in half and how to tuck the divided strands in the shed to create virtually invisible joins. This procedure is particularly effective when you are doing a lot of weft color changes (as in plaids) or when you need to add more weft yarn of the same color.

Please do some more videos. Few are as succinct, clearly explained and as professionally filmed as yours.

This was a great video. As a beginner with only two misc scarf projects finished, all of my joins have looked terrible because I was just winging it. This method makes much more sense. Thanks!

What an easy technique! I made the Country Plaid towels using red and white but I substituted blue yarn for the 2 pick rows. They came out great! I’m planning to make some more as gifts. I hope you do some more videos! Thank you!

Just learned this is not entirely feasible with a Gist yarn - Mallo, since it’s unevenly spun. But would work fine with their Beam yarn. I’ll use the old tuck method for mallo and the split ply method for Beam :)

Wow! I love this technique! I really could have used this info a few days ago when weaving my first kitchen towels from Sugar and Cream cotton yarn, which would have been perfect for the split plies. This is my new favorite technique as I plan to do a lot more towels! Thanks!

I wish I had seen this video before I started my coffee table runner. It never would have occurred to me to do a method like this. A couple of questions: (1) Are there any yarns this will NOT work on? (2) Do you ever have the unplied trimmed ends come out with repeated washing? Thanks so much for this tip! I'll be using it all the time from now on.
