Upon unboxing, I was immediately upset at how the rails were very noticeably bent. But I kept going, all tools needed to assemble were included ru-vid.comUgkxqtX4Dxs6aecAZEuz6GY5-d81YecKCshn and I had it set up in about 30 minutes. Honestly I love this thing, make sure to read the measurements and measure your space so you know if it'll work for you. I bought this to put inside my closet, underneath where I hang my clothes and it is absolutely perfect! It is VERY sturdy and all drawers glide easily and mine are stuffed, and they are still flush when closed.

I like your clamping brackets. I've made something similar, but yours are more elegant. Mine have a flange all the way around, and will stand on their own, so they're quite useful when assembling things on the workbench.

Great video. I love building with birch plywood. The only change I would make with the 100mm would be to cut off the hinge side to keep the grain pattern matching and just redrill the hinges out. Cheers

Those hinges come with that little expanding plugs because they were originally designed to work with crappy MDF panels. Plugs like that just hold better in such materials
@tomruth9487

MDF or even chipboard as in Ikea furniture. They can also be pressed in if you have the right tools, as it's faster than screws.
@bighands69
@bighands69 5 лет назад
I do have hinges without the plugs. They are expensive hand made hinges though. MDF kitchens are fine but I just wish people would know the difference so they know what they are about to buy. I always explain to the customer why I use Plywood over MDF and why the draws are hand made out of solid wood.

Here in the states (at least mine) I've found everyone wants paint grade over the last 2 years. Nobody wants wood atm. I use a maple / maple 3/4 ply carcass w/ 1/2" maple / maple rear panel for square and strength. You used some good methods for cutting down the costs for a budget kitchen while maintaining a decent cabinet grade. I don't know how NZ works but here I can order my hinges for press in or screw in. I use an east coast company called Hafale. I don't know if they cater to NZ but they are my go to for anything kitchen hardware.

I built my kitchen cabinets out of 3/4" 9 ply plywood also but I used wood glue and eight penny finish nails drilling the nail holes with a smaller bit than the nail and 1/4" plywood back glued and nailed, the faces were plywood glues and nailed too, but all my bottom cabinets were ALL drawers of different heights but all the same widths,.. Having all drawers below with stainless bearing glides , to me, is a the best use of space.

Hi Great videos. Here in the UK we only use the supporting braces across the top for the very same reason. What we don’t do is fit a back closure panel on the back of the units. We always come in about 2 inches with our closure plate, for a number of reasons. Firstly our walls especially in older houses are not plum. The can belly in or out. Having just the outer edges of the unit makes it much easier to scribe the unit or wall. Secondly it gives a hidden area for pipes and cable runs behind the units.
@KingPostTimberWorks
@KingPostTimberWorks 6 лет назад
Right you are some times in older places we will leave 15mm gap behind the cabinets for the same reason and use a steel L bracket to fix to the wall.

Great video, it's very interesting to see how woodworking goes in different countries. Here in Brazil the tendency for kitchen cabinets is laminated MDF, all flat. I am not a fan so I am building mine "the american way" with rails and styles and panels and angles. But hey, basic burch ply looks nice and seems to cut down in the costs, so that's clever as well. Great video, thanks for taking the time to share :)

about fitting the large cabinet door , IF you have enough space to lay the cabinet down with the door laying in front of it it be eazier to tighten the door to the cabinet (slide the top and bottom in then take out the screws on all others fold the hinges down and put screws back in)

100mm overlap would have been better to cut the 100mm off the hinge side of the right door and refit the hinges, this would keep the grain flow intact.

Really love that! I'd prefer myself to set the doors inside the corpus and stain the corners dark, keeping the panels in a lighter / brighter color. That puts some breaking lines into the too clean look for my taste. However, it works the same way by just making the side panels a bit longer and use the right hinges, as you already explained. Thank you for the inspiration!

I know it wasn't your choice but I did a smaller one with an island unit and had everything lay flat on the floor with no toekicks, gives it a much more slick modern feel in my opinion. Also, I know they're doing a metal top but splurging on door hardware and pulls can really put things on another level. Great job, wish I had this video for reference when building mine.

@zengtili33
@zengtili33 5 лет назад
@@KingPostTimberWorks I noticed some side panels of some cabinets did reach the floor though, did you cut those after leveling to fit exactly down to the floor? I always find that a rather time consuming part of installing furniture on site.

In the UK, I think majority of bespoke kitchen makers have gone down the ready-made carcass route. Then offering the bespoke part on doors, either 2-part epoxy spray or veneers on MDF. With a few of the top carcass manufacturers, you can order just about any shape/size carcass. The carcass are dirt cheap compared to handmade.
@KingPostTimberWorks
@KingPostTimberWorks 5 лет назад
Not so much bespoke as assemblers of flat packs. I can see this is a time saving endeavor but more importantly this requires less skilled workers and I bet as "Bespoke " kitchen makers they still charge eye watering prices.
@JohnnyMotel99
@JohnnyMotel99 5 лет назад
KingPost TimberWorks hi, please don’t misunderstand my comment, I’m a huge fan of ply kitchens and your work is great. My brother and I had a shop like yours for 20 years up to 2008 and the financial crisis. We started out making everything, carcass to final fit. Our shop was in London and clients were desperate for something different. We offered kitchens in any finish possible. We had a firm who would spray the carcass/doors any colour in the RAL charts. We offered veneered carcasses and doors to match. But like everything, the market in London became very competitive and we had a shop of five employees who were among the best. Then we found a company who would supply ready built carcasses, glued and dowelled, in a range of finishes and on top of that they would make special sizes. Their price and quality, we just couldn’t match. That’s when we started to use these prebuilt units. It wasn’t a route we wanted to take, but then we discovered that this firm was supplying many other much bigger bespoke kitchen firms..... It was only kitchens that used the prebuilt carcasses. We did a lot of bedroom furniture and fo that we used sprayed finished MDF.

Lots of good stuff in here, thanks. This build was very timely. Assume the reason why you cut the excess from the middle and not the sides was because the sides had to match with the panels adjacent to them? BTW, HB! Cheers, David.

Great kitchen. Plywood furniture is quite hip in Belgium as well. Most of the times there’s not even edge banding. WYSIWYG! With good quality plywood like baltic birch or high quality construction pine like Wisa Spruce the edges look amazing after a couple of coats of waterbased poly. The contrast that shows between the different layers is really beautiful. My kitchen is completely made out of Wisa Spruce sheets. Funny thing is half of my friends love it. The other half don’t get it and ask when it will be painted 😂. I like that :). Only thing I would never do again on any cabinet is to use small round holes as doorhandles. Mine are about 20mm, maybe a little bit bigger and I frequently felt like nearly breaking my finger when in a rush opening the door too far before pulling my finger out. If that makes any sence. :) But maybe your holes are bigger. Couldn’t tell that from the video. Anyway, it was something I had to find out the hard way.
@edwinvanderburgt

I find just keeping a couple short scrap pieces of wood of various thicknesses on hand is a quick way to stack up a little stand for the door... Top piece being smooth, so I can just slide it into position and just balance it with one hand while connecting the hinges with the other...

get yourself to ikea and buy all your hinges there, they're much better, although the drawer units are *very* similar, makes me wonder if they have a common supplier. Also, most kitchen carcasses and doors are particle board or MDF, that's why they come with the plastic inserts, screwing small screws into that stuff is a nightmare. after the 100mm error, why didn't you remove the excess from the sides of the door to leave the grain in the middle unaffected? good work.
