I'm thinking about upgrading my PM-25 CNC mill to the 1500 watt motor from my PM-30 mill. I plan on 4000 RPM so I can leave in the stock spindle bearings.
The PM-30 will get a standard 2hp with a VFD.
It will be a while before I'm done, I'm still doing the CNC kit for the PM-30
Thanks guys
Dave

Love to see this when you get it up and running. Maybe take a couple test cuts with new motor installed

I am running a 2 HP servo on my PM-25. If you are interested, there are a few videos of it cutting on my channel. I have gotten it to remove 4.35in^3/min and with a bit of work, it will be capable of even more.

Hi, do you have any details on the old PM25 motor? How many poles does it have? I would like to control mine through a VFD but in order to set the correct VFD settings I need to know the basic motor parameters. Mine did not come with a motor plate. I also have the older one as you show in the video. Thanks! Robert

I have not taken it apart. I don't know if a brushless DC motor will run on a VFD. I do think a 220V drive would give the stock motor some more zip.

it would be nice if the pm 25 came with the 1.5 cause the weiss vm25 came with the 1.5. seems to be the same machines from china (Grizzly G0759) . Also the Weiss vm32 has a 2hp, again the pm30 should have gotten the 2hp.

Bought the Weiss 25L 4 weeks to replace an older less power bench mill. A freind has the PM 25VM. The only difference we can see is the Weiss has a more powerful motor but no step pulleys for high and low and the base of the PM is a little thicker where the base mounts to a bench. You can buy the step pulleys for less than $100.00. The Weiss is listed as a few pounds heavier. Could not be happier with the Weiss. The power and torque are incredible and worth buying the Weiss. The Weiss is about $500.00 cheaper than the PM. Ordered it from TOOLOTS and it was in my shop in 8 days.

Really waiting for PM-30 Kit :) What motor you are planning to put on PM-30 if you are taking this one from it?

I got a new motor from PM because the old one quit. That is the one in the video. In the long run I plan on a 1.5HP 56C with a VFD on the 30. For now the motor in the video will go on the 30 until all the other stuff is done. Once I get the belt drive on the PM-940 then that motor is extra and it will go on the 30. Its a feeding chain. I might take the old PM-25 motor and put it on the G0704. It is rather hard finding a good motor for the little mills.

When do you plan on making a belt drive for the 940? The stock 940 motor is an oddity from what I have been reading. The stock 19mm shaft with a D90 face isn't very common. The 19mm shaft is more common with a D80 face. If one wants to go to a 3ph and up the motor hp while keeping the gears, they will most likely need to turn the shaft down. Anything 2hp or bigger will have a larger 24mm shaft. But if one wants to go to a belt drive, then then the shaft size won't be a problem. I would like to go to a 3ph 3hp motor and covert it to a belt drive. I emailed PM and it looks like the 940's got kicked back to the end of Dec. so who knows.

All the RF-45 clones run the D90 motor face and have 19mm shafts. Its fairly easy to turn one down if you have to but that's not what you seem to want. It will into next year for the 940 belt drives. I have parts for 3 so two will get sold. I can fit most motor faces like 56C and the larger TC face and D90. To mount the pulley I use a QC bushing so most shafts fit. For some of the metric shafts I bore the bushing. I also have fit pulleys to the 19mm stock motors. Its is tricky with the short shaft and that makes the install a pain but works. On thing is the 3600 RPM yields smaller pulleys so they are a bit easier to change speeds. Low speed is faster with the 3600 RPM. High range can be 4K to 8K but over 5K RPM and you need to upgrade to AC spindle bearings.

I wondered if the short shaft would have enough room for pulleys. Thanks for the info. You are very helpful.
