Did a 2" standoff for the PM-25 CNC kit today for the Clear Path Nema 23 servo. Fairly standard stuff. Used an insert tool for the ruffing and a 7/8" 3 flute for the finish. The Mill was my IH /12Z CNC mill with the belt drive spindle. More on the insert cutter later.
Like always I sell the PM-25, PM-30 and PM-940 CNC ball screws kits. Feel free to email me at davedaxx1@yahoo.com
Thanks for watching
Dave

11:05 That’s a clever way to zero the tool. Way more convenient than the scratch or paper method.

It is why you want to retain the use of the quill. It does help if you don't machine away your Z surface and then have to change tools.

Just found your channel! Thank you for actually showing how slow and loud/quiet the mill should be when making parts. I’m always concerned I’m going too slow or the tool doesn’t sound right because every video is sped up and muted. Also, you choose not to show flipping the parts. That’s something else I’ve been trying to find. Nobody ever shows how to flip it. So in your next video, could you please show how to flip it and re-zero?

For that part I should have cut it all the way but I surfaced the part a little tall. To get it to the correct height I just flip it and surface it with a face mill. No need to zero.

Interested in your PM-30MV kit -- however, the links on your site appear to be dead (404 errors). Can you please check into that?

Quick Question; I am very new to this CNC machining. It is my understanding that for CNC machining, you need to use tool holders with repeatable tool length (Like TTS tool holders). How are you able to switch tooling with R8 tool holders and still maintain the proper tool lengths?
@ArizonaVideo99
@ArizonaVideo99 2 года назад
If you do R-8 you set tool zero with every tool. In CAM that is mostly the top of the part but can be anywhere. I mount a tool and then run the head to about a inch from the part. Then I use the quill to set zero. Its quite fast.

@@ArizonaVideo99 Thanks Dave. I am setting up a new shop and trying to decide between R8 and TTS. Thanks for you thoughts.

@@joels4208 TTS or the copies from ebay should be nice and can save time but for the larger mills like the 940 and the tool in the video they would pull out. For the smaller mills or smaller cutters like the PM-30 and the PM-25 TTS would be quite nice.

Dave, I know that you are busy but do you have any future plans on making a belt drive kit for the pm-940?
@ArizonaVideo99
@ArizonaVideo99 4 года назад
There will be a belt drive for the 940. I have changed a bit of the system. I'm going to a 10 grove belt over the 8 grove I have used over the years. This will slip less. It also gives me 15 extra 6" pucks that I will never be able to use. I'm going to make a power draw bar with them. Right now its real busy. I would think when things open again that sales will mostly stop and it will give me time for the drive.

Which mill was this made on?

A IH mill also know as a Charter Oak or a 12Z mill. Some of my early videos have shots of the mill. Like this one. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WCH64i2uSk8.html

how tight do you have your gibs set?
@ArizonaVideo99
@ArizonaVideo99 2 года назад
I always set them by hand to start. With the screw free I set them so it is firm to slide by hand. When new this will only last a few hours. The ways really break in a lot. After 20 hours or so clean off all the fine metal and re grease and re set the Gibs. You need to check for proper Gib tapper. Push the Gib strip by hand until snug, rock the axes with a lot of force, if one end has slop then the Gib is not a good fit and will need shims on the back side of the loose end.

@@ArizonaVideo99 my Z Axis has little bit of slop on my pm25mv, i contacted precision Matthews they said it normal hard to believe. 009 to .010 is normal and told me to lock the Z down when milling . My X and Y are very good! I can adjust the gib and cut down haft but the gib would be almost to a point thats its max out. How much slop is ok?
@ArizonaVideo99
@ArizonaVideo99 2 года назад
@@makosharkcnc7730 I don't know exactly what slop your taking about. The slide should be almost tight with no rock. About .002" would be a good number. Many times the gib strip s cut at a incorrect taper. One end tight and the other loose. Half the mills I have have been that way.

@@ArizonaVideo99 i think I'll remove mind clean it up do you use a brass shim ? I have a .010 brass shim in house would you think that would be too thick? Does the shim go the whole length of the gib? When i put my hand on the Z axis i can move it about .008 side to side.
