The PM-940 CNC kit is done. It does fit the 940V. It's a Nema 34 mount with 20mm ball screws for the X and Y and a 25mm screw for the Z. All the ballscrews are double nuts that I re work for zero lash. Each axes has two adjustable sealed angular contact bearings. I sell them direct just email me at davedaxx1@yahoo.com. I do sell them on my website here.

That is a very nice bit of kit you're offering there. I like the way you adapt OTS components for optimum precision and design to avoid butchering the mill just to make things fit. Sure, some mods are unavoidable, but I've seen lazy and this isn't it. I used to work as a mechanic, and later designer, for automation; so mechanics and motion control are not unfamiliar to me. Good luck with the business side of things. Subscribed.

What is the diff between Z-powerfeed and non-powerfeed?
@cncspeakers1664
@cncspeakers1664 3 года назад
If you order the powerfeed then you get a different top plate and a lift motor. None of this is used for CNC. The power feed top plate has a different bolt pattern but I no longer use any of the stock holes.

I know this is an older video but I'm wondering if the 940M CNC kit will work on the 940V as well. Other than the head being belt driven vs gear driven all the other specs seem to be identical.

I've been looking at purchasing the PM-940 recently, but I also saw their PM-833T. It's advertised as having a precision ground spindle (.0002 runout) and hand scraped ways. I'm not sure how the 940 runout and ways compare. Do you have any thoughts on the 833T? It looks to have slightly smaller travels, but not by much. Great work on the kits. Thanks

I cant say too much about a mill that I have not had. I have had a good number of the benchtop mills like a RF-31, G0704, PM-25, Weiss 30 , PM-30, Charter Oak 12Z( 2 of them), and the PM-940m. The RF-31 was a Taiwan mill and in a lot of ways it was a better made mill. The castings were almost perfect, the Quill fit was vary nice and the motor ran smoother. I would expect the fit and finish on the 833T to be first rate which would be nice for a change. Many time with the China mills you have to do work on the Ways and Gib strips to get smooth movement. With that said the 833 is a true RF-45 sized mill and it not really in the same class size wise over the 940. The fit and finish on the 940 is better than the Charter Oak mills but not quite as good as the Taiwan mills. With the 833 you are going to pay a lot more for a mill that is not stronger than a 940. With that said I do like that the 833 is for sale. If you don't want to fuss with stuff it should be a good mill. I would like to add that the PM-30 is a Weiss 30 mill and the fit and finish is really quite high for it. It is smaller but quite high quality and has the highest spindle speed of the benchtop mill in question.

@@ArizonaVideo99 Thanks for the feedback. I was hoping since you bought the 940 you might have looked into the 833. It's good to know that the PM-30 is good quality and it was another mill that I was considering. I do like the size of the 940 though. The 940 xyz is 28/12/20.5 and the 833 xyz is 23/11/17.5. Price is important, but size (not too small) and accuracy is probably more important for me. I guess I'd like a Taiwan 940.
@MF175mp
@MF175mp 4 года назад
The 940 is available with hardened ways, that is the most important thing if I was to buy one from them, in addition to the cast iron base and also has most mass in the body.

The kit looks great! How much load can it handle with servos? For example what would be the max rapid/cut rates you would be comfortable running? Could it handle 800 ipm Rapids with 100lb on the bed?
@ArizonaVideo99
@ArizonaVideo99 5 лет назад
Running a mill at 800 IPM requires a bit of work to do it continuously and not wear things out. This is my IH mill when new and a direct drive servo and a new rolled double nut Hiwin ball screw. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M299KWBsuBs.html I don't say in the video but after about 10 min of 300 IPM movement the ball nut was so hot it burned me when I touched it. With dovetails, especially when new, have a lot of drag. A rolled ball screw, if you want to have zero backlash, will have a a fair amount of drag. You make a trade off with a rolled screw. It will have some micro small tight spots that your rollover. it does not bind but they are much larger than with a ground screw. What you get in exchange is more heat and lower life. For a hobby mill this is a good trade off. Most will run there mills a few hundred hours a year and it will last many years like that. If you wish to run at 500 IPM or near that speed it will cause the ball nuts to heat up unless you run loose nuts and accept a little backlash. You will also want to run forced oil cooling like the pro mills do. With a 1800 RPM spindle most the time your are cutting around 10 to 20 IPM and 100 to 150 IPM rapids are fine. With the 86N DMM servo at 150V you can get 400 IPM and set it for lets say 300 IPM but its really not needed. Thanks Dave

@@ArizonaVideo99 Would I be better off welding up a frame out of 1" cold rolled steel and putting linear rails on it?
@waynecoots3634
@waynecoots3634 5 лет назад
@@ArizonaVideo99 That video that you shared above sounds like everything is really tight. Would it be better to slightly loosen the preload on the ball screw and account for the backlash in the controller or to keep it tight and just run slower?

I make kits for both. Its hard to tell from the pictures but the 940 is a lot larger than the 30. The 30 is about 430 pounds and the 940 is 800 without the stand. The 30 is really good as a hobby mill and the 3000 RPM spindle is the best of the hobby mills. The 940 is a lot stronger but it is only really good after you change to a belt drive which I will be doing soon. You can always email me at davedaxx1@yahoo.com Thanks Dave

I have one ordered too. I ordered about a week ago and was told sometime in November. When were you told to expect it? When I ordered mine, they said they only had a two left of the basic with hardened ways that were not spoken. I don't know about the other 940 variations but it sounds like they sell out of the 940's quicker than they can get them in.
